The sun peeked through the jagged edges of the trees on Route 6, casting a warm glow on the surrounding terrain. Ken rubbed the sleep from his eyes as he stepped outside their well-worn campsite, the earth still damp with the morning dew. Beside him, his faithful partner, Koa, completed a series of stretches before hopping up, ready for the day’s training.
"Alright, Koa," Ken said, a determined gleam in his eyes. "Today we’ll work on the elemental punches again."
Koa tilted his head, curious, ears perked up, an unasked question in his eyes. Ken crouched down to face his partner, “Yes I remember, but this time you’ve mastered the basic 4 moves, now we can slowly incorporate more variety.”
Together, they spent the morning practicing. Ken had decided that Fire Punch, Ice Punch, and Thunder Punch could give Koa the extra edge he needed in their battles. As the sun climbed higher in the sky, they unleashed the flurry of elemental punches, each strike crackling with energy.
Koa’s form became an explosive dance of fists and feet, drawing energy from his surroundings. The Mankey quickly adapted, his muscle memory kicking in to incorporate the moves into his already honed techniques. “Use Fire Punch to channel your strength!” Ken shouted, as Koa slammed his fist into a tree, leaving a smoldering mark behind. The smell of burnt bark filled the air as Koa smirked and bounced back.
After a grueling training session, they gathered their belongings and shared a simple breakfast of berries, Pokéblocks, and water—fuel for the battles that lay ahead. Ken packed up their campsite, ensuring they left nothing behind, then they made their way to the arena, nerves tingling with excitement.
The Battle Royale Dome loomed ahead, a massive structure buzzing with energy. Ken could hear the cheers of spectators flooding the air as trainers competed in the arena. They approached Ken’s designated battlefield, a circle marked with charred remnants of previous battles.
“Five-person Battle Royale, huh? This should be interesting,” Ken mused aloud as he prepared for the match. It wasn't easy to find trainers of his level looking for thrilling multi-battles.
Ken scanned the waiting trainers: an Alolan Raticate with its slick, shifty eyes; a stone-faced Sudowoodo; a laid-back yet determined Golduck; and a menacing Stoutland, its fur bristling with latent power.

“Stay sharp, Koa,” Ken whispered, feeling a thrill of anticipation.
The whistle blew, and the pokemon erupted as the battle commenced. Koa dashed into the fray with an agile leap, his instincts kicking in. All at once he saw his chance, the Alolan Raticate’s brashness left it wide open. Koa struck first, unleashing a picture perfect Drain Punch that sent the dark/normal type flying. The crowd erupted, as the 4x effective Fighting energy coursed through the rat’s body and it hit the ground, knocked out.
But fame was fleeting in the Battle Royale. Targeted, Koa found himself under fire from the remaining combatants. Just as he prepared for another attack, Stoutland barreled into the Golduck with a tremendous Take Down, knocking it out instantly. The massive canine turned towards Koa, the impact having only slightly diminishing its momentum.
“Watch out, Koa!” Ken shouted, seeing the looming presence of Stoutland bearing down upon his Pokémon. The battle was escalating, and a fire ignited in Koa’s chest—the urge to rise above.
Koa utilized Rock Slide, and massive stones plunged from above toward Stoutland. Yet the tough Normal-Type shook them off like dust, advancing relentlessly. As they collided, Koa felt the force of Stoutland push him back, but he held fast. Another surge of resolve surged through him.
“Now! Thunder Punch!” Ken screamed.
In a spectacular display of power and fury, Koa readied himself and launched a sparking fist straight toward the Stoutland. The attack connected, stunning the opponent momentarily. Ken saw his opening.
“Drain Punch!” he shouted, and Koa unleashed another blow. Stoutland staggered and reeled, trying to regain momentum. The battle was at its climax.
Suddenly, Ken’s eyes widened as he saw the Sudowoodo sneak up behind the entangled Koa and Stoutland. “Dodge!” Ken screamed as Koa leapt back instinctively. The Sudowoodo, now full charged up, launched a massive Wood Hammer directly into the Stoutland, and the canine dropped, struggling for a few moments, another Slam by the Imitation pokemon and the mighty Pokémon was downed again.
With only Sudowoodo remaining, Koa knew he had to finish strong. The two faced off in a fierce duel, the Sudowoodo launched rocks and debris at Koa, while the Mankey calmly dodged with incredible precision. Ken felt the tension in the air; they were so close.
“Bulldoze.” Ken coaxed.
Koa pulled back, gathering his energy to his feet and stomping the ground. As the ground energy rippled through the arena floor, the Sudowoodo lost its footing. Koa dashed in at this opportunity towards the Sudowoodo, landing a Drain Punch, sending the Rock-Type sprawling to the ground.
Silence engulfed the arena. Koa, panting heavily, emerged victorious, fists raised in triumph, capturing the exhilarated thrill of victory.
As the cheers returned with a volley of enthusiasm, a blinding light engulfed Koa, illuminating the dust and debris swirling around them. In moments, where Koa had once stood, there was now a chest-thumping Primeape, eyes gleaming with newfound power and confidence.
Ken rushed to the newly evolved Koa, adrenaline pulsing through his veins. “You did it, buddy! You really did it! Welcome to the next level, Koa!” Ken exclaimed, unable to contain his pride. They had grown stronger together, both as partners and as fighters, feeling ready to take on anything the world could throw at them.
As they exited the arena, Ken couldn’t help but smile. Their regular rhythm had found its pulse, and they had so much ahead of them—more training, more matches, more victories.
