Volume 1 Chapter 68

Volume 1 Chapter 68

Ali waited atop a building roof as dozens of airships moved away from the outer walls towards the inner walls. As determined by intel, the garrison had just abandoned the outer walls, leaving many civilians at the mercy of the attackers. It was only a matter of time before the attacking side entered the slums unopposed. With that in mind, the Dark Cult and Lightning Clan members laid in ambush as they waited for the attacking soldiers to enter. They would strike as soon their enemies entered the city and they received the signal.

If I had my traps, then this would all be so much easier…

Without his most powerful ability, the teenager relied on his second most powerful ability, air serpent. Tian had been monitoring the enemy deployment for several hours while relaying all the positions to him. With nothing to do except to wait, learning about the deployment of enemy soldiers was a way for Ali to kill time. Regardless of how the enemy deployed, their strategy was the same. They had to inflict heavy losses, making the attackers more cautious or, ideally, be willing to negotiate directly with the Dark Cult on acceptable terms for both parties. The key was to bring the attacking army to the negotiating table.

They’re scaling the walls now. Be ready for combat within the next hour.

Following the warning from Tian, Ali passed the information to his group. Once Belen relayed it to the other Dark Cult members, she walked over and crept down beside Ali. All of them had camouflage cape that concealed them so they needn’t worry about being discovered easily. While there were skills and items that could reveal them, they were counting on the eagerness of the attackers to sweep through the city. As expected, the attackers didn’t even bother holding the walls since they immediately opened the main gate to continue their advances into the streets. Ali, like the others, waited for the signal to strike.

They’re so confident, Ali! They won’t even see the ambush coming.

As he waited for the signal, Ali looked through his abilities before he decided upon his wind blast. There were plenty of targets, making this an ideal situation to use it. He could always find chances for his air slash in the future. As for his flame blast, he had to find a riskier position to make good use of it. Then, some fireworks went off in the distance, signaling the start of the ambush. Ali immediately used his wind blast at the nearest soldiers before he switched over to his air slash. Given the soldiers were in tight formation, his attack hit a dozen people. Following the initial attack from him and nearby Dark Cult members, a number of the soldiers collapsed onto the ground. The teenager then focused his air slash on the wounded soldier who was barely standing.

With his MP depleted, Ali jumped into a dark alleyway where he waited for his MP regen to take effect. Two minutes later, he got atop the roof again and repeated what he did earlier, only he didn’t get the killing blow this time. While distributing his stat points would help with his low MP situation, the chaotic battlefield made it so he couldn’t afford to look away for even a second, let alone the minutes needed to distribute his stat points and pick his new ability. The casualties on both sides were already climbing and he had no intention of joining the dead. As he got ready to hide again, he heard several war horns in the distance. He turned to see the horn blowers on the walls, signaling something into motion.

This is bad! I better regroup with the others!

As soon as the battle began, Ali had Tian assist Kamis. He knew his companion was solid on the defense but, without strong offensive abilities, Kamis couldn’t possibly last for long. Both Belen and Kurata were more suited for the combat so he wasn’t worried about them. At least, he wasn’t worried until he heard the war horns. From what he learned from Juraj, war horns were only used in Cheudal for major offensives. The fact that they were used probably meant the attacking side’s general had already deemed the combined forces of the Dark Cult and Lightning Clan too dangerous to be left around. Even his gut told him that things were about to worsen. As though to confirm his worst fears, storm clouds moved into the region with thunder announcing their arrival.

Ali! The others are gathered at location A. Come join them immediately!

With the air serpent leading the way, Ali managed to evade most of the combat and reached his companions in a few minutes. As soon as he arrived, Kamis tossed him something.

What is this…

Ali thanked Kamis and put the armor on. It was still extra protection, even if he wasn’t very impressed by it. With their group members reunited within the chaos, they hid atop a roof as they watched what the attacking side had in store. Suddenly, the ground shook violently, grabbing the attention of everyone nearby. Then, the ground shook a second time. By the time the ground shook a third time, many people were pointing towards the walls. It took Ali a full minute before his brain registered what his eyes were seeing.

How...how are we supposed to defeat that?
