Nova

Every time I punch the bag in front of me, I scream. My mind is turning and flying with thoughts. How could he leave me?! I loved him. He left me, for a stupid mistake. What did I do…  What did I do… What did I do… Just last night, my boyfriend, who, I might add, I had been with for three years, left me.

To be fair, I must have scared him. We were watching The Confessions of the Stars when the surprise came. I wasn’t aware of anything unusual, but Michael was staring at me. “What?” I said, my voice quiet, as to not wake my sleeping brother. “Nova…” He whispers. “You’re floating.”

As far back as I can remember when my parents were still alive, I have been afraid of myself. My parents had told me time and time again to tell them if anything “out of the ordinary” was happening, but they were always very vague about it. I finally knew what they were talking about. I feel like a monster. I don’t know what to do, how to control it if it happens again. And my brother. What if he has his own… Whatever this is. I pause and look at my watch. My mind jolts out of a trance. I’ve been in the gym for more than two hours. I think to myself. Time to move on.

I like to think of myself as strong and independent, but I am the complete opposite. I have three anchors in my life. My brother, Reagen; the only remnant of my parents, their memories; it’s hard to get through the day without thinking about them, and my tight group of friends; Solace, Jenna, and Quinn.

On my first day of high school, Jenna and Solace were sitting quietly in a corner of the auditorium. I joined them and they didn’t protest. After that, we always sat together, and I think it was because we were all from the orphanage, and we all disliked interruptions. We just fit together. Later in the year, we were sitting together studying for the finals and we started talking about a sophomore boy named Lukus.

Quinn sat down at the table next to us so quietly we almost didn’t notice him, and when we did, it was too late. We all stopped talking as he approached us. He was dressed fully in black and he had a beanie on. “Don’t you just love blackmail?” He laughed. We all froze. “Hey,” He said, laughing again. “I suck at Language Arts. If you guys let me study with you, I’ll keep my mouth shut.” We all looked at each other and nodded. “Sure,” I said warily. “But just this once.”

After that, he always showed up when we were studying and joined us. It turned out that he was really good at focusing and excelled in most subjects, except ELA. We have been inseparable ever since.

They are my best friends, but no one will ever take the place of my brother. He was five and I was ten when “the accident” happened. When people came to take us to the orphanage, I was the only person who took care of him. There were lots of kids - I think the most we had at one point was 124 - and many different age ranges. They hosted kids as young as two, and as old as 20. Every day you had to scramble to get food to eat, and there was never enough.  When I turned 20, I took my brother and got out of there. He’s lived with me for a year now, and I have managed to get money for both of us to go to school. Overall, my life wasn’t so bad, well, of course, until recently.
