That night Taryn, Mason, Logan, Steph, Sig, and Izi leave the hospital and go to Taryn’s house. The ladies had not known about Taryn’s family trade nor about what had happened to him when he saw the rusty old knife for the first time. Given everything that happened Izi demands an explanation. As the boys do their best to explain everything to her anger mounts. She feels betrayed and does not believe their tale one bit. Not only is she angry at their absurd tale, but she is also now in serious trouble both with the university and the ministry.
Mackenzie, who had been working in the shop when they all arrived, overhears their heated conversation and interrupts them. She suggests that Taryn contacts Godmund again and asks him for information about the village in his time. From his first conversation with him, Taryn knows there was a small village somewhere along the river but is unsure of exactly where.
Izi still doesn’t believe any of this. She has seen no proof to back up any of Taryn’s claims. No one even saw the keystone for sure. It is likely they will never know if it was even there, There is no chance they will ever be allowed back on site after everything that has happened. There is no way she can put her hopes in anything Taryn supposedly finds out by asking a man who died over 1400 years ago.
Mackenzie again has the solution. She has been working on a ritual to help record her dreams. She has traveled to the fae in a lucid dream and is working towards finding a path there again. The ritual she has created copies the images in her head allowing her to gain access to the hidden knowledge while she is awake. So far all she has managed had been a blurry image as if it were taken by a camera that is out of focus and in terrible light. To her though, the images are enough to call forth the memories buried in her subconscious. She believes Taryn will be able to do a lot better for two reasons.
This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.
The first reason has to do with power. Taryn has innate power. Mackenzie had no power of her own, relying only on ritual magic. She believes Taryn will be able to channel significantly more power through the ritual than she ever has.
Secondly, when Mackenzie used the ritual for herself, she was drawing from her own memory. The blurry images she produced only helped her find the knowledge inside her. She was not giving that knowledge away. For Taryn however, the memories he will be drawing on belong to Godmund, who has no need of them now. Being dead, he is able to let go of the memories entirely, sending the original “file” where Mackenzie could only reproduce a week copy.
The ritual takes place and a skeptical Izi is amazed when her phone buzzes. Three new messages are delivered. Two photos and a video. The image quality rivaled any modern camera. Izi apologies to Taryn and Macekzie for doubting them. She remarks on how crisp the images are and how much she can learn from the memory of a man who lived so long ago. Mackenzie wasn’t surprised with the quality of the result. After all, Dead men tell the best tales.
