Part 29

“Okay guys, I/we think that’s enough. Let’s cast the spell for the Eye and head towards the human city. We’re missing the fight.”

“Oh shut it, you impatient Air spirit. We’re not doing anything till we are full. The last thing we want is for our energy to run out while we are watching the fight.”

“A problem we would not be having if you idiots had listened to the rest of us and not blow a giant hole to the surface.”

“Some of us just like to complain.” A spirit grumbled. “We didn’t hear any of you guys coming up with any good idea on how to get the dragon to the surface quickly.”

“Saying that, shouldn’t be covering up the hole above us first before doing anything else?”

The spirits of the Hive turned their focus to the hole above them. It was a big long tunnel shooting straight up from the underground forest to the surface. The Hive could see the sky from where they were and though it had been a few days since they blew the giant hole to the surface, it was still there.

“Oh come on, we already discussed this! You guys lost. The hole is staying!”

Some of the spirits within the Hive had argued that the Hive should cover up the hole but the Hive decided against it. Most of the spirits within the Hive like having the big hole above them and the few spirits, mostly Earth, who advocated for the Hive to close off the opening were outvoted.

To most of the Hive, the big opening was a good thing. Not only does the hole make it easier for the Hive to feed as the Hive now had a direct link to the surface, the Air spirits within the Hive were especially delighted to be able to see the sky after so many years in the deep earth. Most of the spirits also believe that their creatures would enjoy having the hole. Their flyers for one would love the direct route out of the underground forest. None that these reasoning were enough for the complaining spirits.

“This is stupid! Why do we even need this big hole? We were doing just fine without it. This hole is unnecessary.”

“Look, you guys may not right about us not needing the hole but so what? It’s fun to have the hole above us. It’s easier to feed, we now get to see the sky, and there’s no danger. There’s no reason to cover it up.”

“It is a danger.” A spirit insisted. “What if some human jump down from the top? He would come straight to us.”

“Are you serious?”

The spirit arguing to cover up the hole stayed silent. In truth, none of the spirits within the Hive seriously believe that they were in any danger from the humans. The distance from the top of the hole to the Hive was so long that any human jumping down from the top would be die long before they smash into the ground. Even if the humans decide to use magic, the Hive would still have plenty of ways to kill them. The humans also had to contend with their flyers. Their harpies for example would make quick work of any slow moving humans floating down. They had their Boss, their creatures, and the Kin. Even right now with the Kin fighting at the human city, the Hive was still very well protected. The Hive had nothing to worry about. Even from those humans currently looking down at it from the surface.

“Uh…”

The Hive turned their focus from their argument to the hole above them once again. Above them, at the top of the hole were about twenty humans. The Hive hadn’t noticed them before as the humans were still at the top but now it did, the spirits within the Hive cheered.

“Guess we don’t have to go to the human city to see a fight.” A spirit happily said.

As the spirit said that, one of the humans cast a spell. The Hive sensed the energy spreading to the rest of the humans and noticed a small white feather appearing and disappearing above the head of each human.

“Hey, we know that human!” One of the spirits within the Hive exclaimed.

The Hive focused on the spell casting human and realized that the spirit was right. That human had been to their tunnels but he disappeared with two of his follow companions before the Hive could kill him. The Hive then realized that two of the other humans above them had also been with them before. The humans jumped but instead of falling, they were all slowly floating down. The spirits cheered even wilder. The humans were coming to them!

The Hive gathered their energy and used some of it to call out to the few creatures that had stayed behind. The rest of the energy was given to the Earth spirits. The Earth spirits within the Hive took control and used it on the hole. A long spike shot out from the side of the hole, flying directly towards one of the unsuspecting humans. The speed of the spiked projectile was terrifying and it didn’t stop even after hitting the human. The spike drilled the human to the other end of the hole and on impact, blood spurt out of him like a fountain.

The other humans saw the human hanging dead and all their complexions changed. That spilt second was all they got as countless spikes began shooting out from the side of the hole. The Hive watched in delight as several of the humans were killed by the spikes; one of them even manage to penetrate through two humans, killing both of them together. An old woman shouted at the human who cast the floating spell and the human response by withdrawing it.

The humans stop floating. They were now dropping like stones to the ground. The Hive was shocked. The spirits within had no idea why the human released his spell. They were still too high up to survive a landing.

“Crazy humans.”
