Chapter 16

“It’s not a pretty sight,” said Vince as he and Chris approached the bedroom door.

“Nothing involving Dreamkillers and Orion is pretty,” she replied.

Vince agreed and then opened the door. Chris saw that Vince didn’t catch all of Samantha’s blood as she looked at the walls and the bed, which were saturated as well. Then her eyes fell downward and she saw her friend lying on the floor just as Vince had described.

“I hope Mykella’s all right,” she whispered.

“Do you know where to go?”

Agnes stopped walking and looked at Mykella with an apologetic smile. “I was actually hoping that you would guide us.” She turned and looked around her at the lifeless sea of earth. “I haven’t been there in more than fifteen years.”

Mykella shook her head. “And how am I supposed to know how to get there?” She was trying to maintain patience. She closed her eyes and in that fraction of a moment, she saw a body sleeping in a large bed.

She opened her eyes again and looked at Agnes. “I think we’re going the right way.” Like the jungle in her dreams, another mystery was unfolding before her. She didn’t know how, or even why, but she felt almost connected with Orion.

“Can you keep a secret?”

Agnes glanced around and then back at Mykella. “As we are the only two around, I don’t think that would be too difficult.”

Mykella almost laughed at the absurdity of her secret comment. “I think I’m having visions of Orion.” She was afraid Agnes would scold her for even thinking such a thing was possible.

“I see,” pondered Agnes. “And what do you see him doing?”

“He’s sleeping.”

Agnes nodded. “Then we must be cautious,” she said. “When Orion sleeps, the realm of our reality alters.”

“I don’t understand – I’ve never seen anything altered.”

“No, I should think not. You’ve been in that apartment all your life. Tell you the truth; I don’t know how he does it. Perhaps you can use your visions to find out how.”

Mykella shook her head. “I’ve only had one other vision, but I wasn’t even sure what I was seeing,” she said. “How do things alter when we’re awake?”

“We’ll find out when they do,” replied Agnes with a shrug. “Come, we must keep going.”
