Chapter 3 - Barley bread

Chapter 3 - Barley bread

A cool wind blew through the trees, swaying the waist-deep green grass on the abandoned roads on the outskirts of Garlix Mountain.

Red got new clothes from Fefe's owners, they were a little baggy on her, but they were better than the Sabber shirt she was wearing, they were peasant clothes, so they could travel peacefully.

Now she was wearing a white shirt, with a big V-neck and that the sleeve went to a little after the elbow, because it was too wide, Red must tie at the ends, leaving part of her belly exposed, and dark green pants, which brought a more naturalistic look, and stood out with the tones of Red's hair and eyes, which were very red.

Sabber was already calmer, and calm, he watched Red from time to time, it was the first time he was traveling with someone, it was a little strange for him, but he tried as much as possible not to show nervousness, the 200 luxols of the mission would be a great help to him at that moment, he could buy some books on Rousex's botany and pay a few nights at some lodging near the guild, until he organized himself and went to the Rareface mountains, in search of the next dragon temple, to try to make Red to revert to her true form, when Sabber looked at Red, she was looking very nervous for some reason.

"What's up? Are you feeling okay? You have a strange face" Sabber spoke without showing that he was worried.

Red looked at Sabber seriously, after a while in silence and said "I can't believe it, if I had my wings we would have already crossed the Kingdom, we've been walking for almost one day, I hope it's not always like this" Red was in silence practically the entire time that they left that cave, she only exchanged a few words with Fefe's owners and ate a plate full of stew, she has a voracious appetite, as she repeated the dish 4 times.

"I think that after we get more resources we can buy a mount, or even pay a transport with a merchant and his wagon, depending on the location there are "trains" powered by magic, they are very useful too, but they are not available in all cities" Sabber tried to cheer her up and make her hopeful.

"Wait a minute, more resources? How many resources do you have anyway?" It seems that Red had a little understanding of the market, but she still wasn't used to the world where Sabber lived.

"At the moment we only have the money I got from the Bluezal family, I think we could spend a few days in town with that, but I wouldn't be able to buy a mount right now" Sabber was trying to get away from the subject, although he was also tired from the distance covered.

"I don't believe!!!" Red gave an enraged scream that echoed through the clouds.

"How could I be cursed like that! by a person like you! no magic, no strength, a total beginner!" Red was screaming out loud and some flames came out of her mouth as she screamed

"Look! Your magic power is really increasing!" Sabber spoke happily to Red.

"Do not change the subject!" She screamed in Sabber's direction, nearly burning him with flames.

"Careful, don't yell at me, I don't have fire resistance" Sabber was sweating a lot, by nervosism, she was already much more powerful, and that worried him.

"Tell me a little about these mounts, I don't think we have that in our world" Red still very nervous, there was a vein popping out of her forehead, but she tried to change the subject.

"Mounts can be earned, if you manage to tame a wild beast and use it as a mount, if you get that, you can ride the beast anywhere, but you need to pay for some stable outside the city to take care of your mounts, that's still demand a lot of money, or you can buy a mount, the most common are the chococo, they are three meters tall birds, they can be raised on a farm, that's why they are the most used" Sabber made a different face when teaching something, he seemed more mature than normal

"So with these chococo we could fly?" Red looked more excited

"Unfortunately no, they just run, they are like giant chickens, mounts that fly are very rare, it is very difficult to be tamed, and chococo, attract a lot of beasts, because they are birds, many monsters might find them appetizing" Red was clearly disheartened, Sabber didn't comment, but he had already decided to avoid using mounts for a little time, to avoid unnecessary battles.

Red growled and was in silence again.

The rest of the trip was very quiet, they just walked for a few more hours, and when it was getting dark, they arrived at one of the villages on the outskirts of Garlix mountain, to spend the night, it was a very small and cozy village they must have been around fifty families living there, and apparently a single tavern that also served as lodging.

In the tavern, the chef was finishing baking the barley bread, the smell of freshly baked bread was present throughout the street, it was a strong and warm aroma, inviting anyone who was nearby to come and taste this bread with some soup while drinking a mead with aromatic herbs.

And from far away from that street, at the entrance of the village, Red could already smell the bread, it was something she had not tasted before, but her stomach had already liked it just for the smell.

And it seemed Red is hypnotized or possessed, she just walked towards the tavern without stopping and without even hearing the Sabber calling her to understand what was happening to her.

As soon as Sabber reached her, he understood everything, the smell of barley bread was strong, and it seemed very inviting.

As soon as Sabber entered the tavern, he saw that Red was euphoric asking for three huge loaves of bread for her, each loaf should serve for Sabber alone to eat for several days, those three loaves were enough for Sabber to spend at least two weeks eating, but Red was already eating, she had brought three of these buns to the table and shortly afterward, the waitress brought her a huge bowl of soup.

"Must be some celebration" Sabber thought, many of the villagers were present there that night, you could tell the number of citizens by the number of houses and the number of residents that were present, in the tavern.

After Sabber joined the table, the waitress went to serve him.

"Good evening, would you like to order something?" The waitress, as well as all the people there, were very happy.

"I'll have a few slices of that barley bread, with a small bowl of soup, and a pitcher of mild mead." Sabber soon saw that he was going to overcharge, so he just ordered everything from the smallest to economize.

"Just one thing, is there some sort of celebration going on here today?" Sabber asked the waitress.

"Yes, we have received news that a young adventurer who grew up here in this village, led an attack against a notorious group of thieves and managed to arrest them all, this news has spread all over the Kingdom and his name is starting to get known" The waitress could't hold back a smile when talking about it.

"And what is this adventurer's name?" Asked Sabber, who is also pleased with the news.

"Getteto Amessim, he grew up in a house just down this street, I lived with him throughout my childhood" She smiled even wider as she said these words.

"Getteto Amessim? I've heard, he's from the Sinai guild, not long ago, he also ended up with a pirate ship that was attacking near Tripathi harbor" Sabber always sought to know about everything that happened in the kingdom, in order to become an even better adventurer.

Sabber and the waitress talked for a few more minutes, he talked about the feats he knew of Getteto, and she shared some stories about the way he was, when he still lived in the village, but soon she went back to work, as the house was full, but the waitress served quality mead on the house for Sabber and Red, as the waitress was happy with the conversation.

There were also other people from outside the village, three merchant-looking men sitting alone in the corner of the hall, watching everything, including Sabber's conversation with the waitress.

Red stuffed himself with bread, chewed as if he was breaking bones, and spilling crumbs that fell from his mouth all over the table, this caught the attention of some people, Red in those clothes seemed to be a young and kind country girl, they even found it strange that she was there, but thought it best not to ask, the Sabber seemed to be a fragile person, looking from afar, and his "armor" and sword did not cause fear to anyone, but they would avoid confusion.

Even though Red was totally focused on the food, she still managed to pay enough attention to Sabber's conversation.

"look's like you know a lot anyway" She spoke with her mouth full of bread and spitting even more crumbs onto the table

"I said, I have a good memory, it can help a lot with some things" Sabber seemed to be totally confident about himself.

"And don't talk with your mouth full, people are already starting to look" He went on, and in response Red gave him a look that if it had been a sword, it would have killed him immediately.

Red also saw that the guys sitting at the back of the counter were staring at them.

The night went on in its excitement, after some jars of mead with herbs, Sabber sang and danced with the village people, even they were surprised, Sabber knew all the songs and sang some songs that even they didn't remember anymore.

Red just watched the party as she ate and drank, after she had satiated herself, she still managed to eat a little more throughout the night, as if the bread was a portion of a snack.

The sun was shining in that village, and the tavern was now a corner of silence, during the party, Sabber discovered that the village it is called Castela, in honor of the Immortal Affnerr X Castela, who did great deeds in that region and had stayed there several times.

But before the sun could find the window of the room where Sabber stayed to sleep, he was awakened by a knock on the door, and as soon as he went to observe what was happening, he saw that the whole village was in an uproar.

"They took everything" "Even my paintings disappeared" "they took the pendant I inherited from my mother" "they took all the gold I collected during my life" "they took the spell books I had kept"... And the voices continued, and they continued, while they were having a good time at the bar, some bandits took everything from their homes, their treasures, their inheritances, dresses that looked expensive, swords and all sorts of souvenir weapons, they did a total cleaning in the city and everyone was in a big suffering from it all.

Sabber was speechless in the face of this situation, and soon he remembered the scroll that was left in his bag, and he ran back to the room, only to find that the scroll and the rest of the luxols had also been taken, he ran to the room where Red stayed, and the tavern owner said he tried to call her several times and couldn't, so Sabber asked the tavern owner to borrow the key because he worried about Red, feared something had happened.

But as soon as he entered Red's room, he saw that she slept like a baby, the expression on her face was completely changed, he didn't think about it, but it was the first time she slept in a bed.

After calling her a few times and she didn't wake up, he had to shake her hard, that's when she got up.

At first she was calm, Red was totally renewed, but after Sabber told her what had happened, she ran towards the village streets and soon saw that everyone was crying.

"It wasn't just a simple theft, they took everything that had sentimental value too" An elderly woman told Red this as tears welled up in her eyes.

"We already know who it was, they left their mark" Said the tavern waitress, who was visibly shaken and pointed to the front of the tavern "It's the mark of the group of thieves that Getteto said he exterminated" "They made the same mark at the entrances to the city " Said a gentleman who could barely stand, he was so shaken by what he hid his sad face and his tears with his hat.

"And there's something else" said the waitress, she pointed to the end of the street, there was still a little smoke on the street "They burned the house where Getteto grew up, his family was fine but they are completely helpless".

Sabber ran towards the burned house, and Red followed closely, and so they saw the grief and pain on the faces of Getteto's family.

Red was speechless, she wasn't used to all that commotion, it was the first time she had seen anything like this, and she didn't know what to say to family members, and to people who were in tears and pain.

"Hey Sabber" She spoke quietly so only he could hear.

Sabber looked closely at her, she was withdrawn and a little shy, it was a far more fragile sight of the Red he was used to.

"Let's get out of here soon, we can't waste so much time on this" She kept talking low, making her expression very feminine, something really different from what Sabber knew.

"But there's a problem, they also took my money and the scroll I found in the temple" Sabber said, not worrying too much about it.

Red's expression transformed before Sabber's eyes, she who had been so self-conscious and feminine now seemed to have pure fire running through her veins.

"I can't believe it! How you let somethin like this happen?" She could barely get the words out, her teeth were clenching together, and everything that came out of her mouth sounded like grunts.

"Let's look for their trail, maybe we can find them, they can't be far from here" Sabber had already decided that he would do that.

"No need to look for their tracks, I can smell their scents, it's all over the place, they went that way" Red pointed to the East, they went to a very different side from which Sabber and she were following, so they needed to even hurry up.

< Chronicles of Rousex >

"In Year 6 of the Reign of Rabem Jeremiah, Badanna Gioia, a mage with powers related to the water element, became an Immortal in the seat of Emmirr Brontë.

Between beast attacks on cities, and magical monsters and conflicts and wars between the realms, Badanna Gioia liked to spend her free time in a town southeast of the capital, called Súilleabháin, in honor of an ancient Immortal.

It was a city that was surrounded by mountains, and these mountains had many springs of water, even at some distance from that region, it was possible to see the giant waterfalls on the slopes of the mountains, it was a mystery how this amount of water could be produced, but the residents of Súilleabháin didn't think much about it and just felt blessed by the waters, as there were dozens of different rivers that flowed through the city, which was much larger and more populous than the capital of the kingdom.

In one of those periods when Badanna Gioia was in the city, dark clouds covered the entire sky, dense like rocks from the bottom of the ocean, and causing terror to everyone in the city.

But they still didn't know what was coming, as soon as the sun went down, the rain started to fall, it looked like an ocean was being poured over that city, in a short time, all the rivers overflowed, and the water from the top of the mountains, descended swiftly and fiercely like the onslaught of an iron Owl.

Panic had taken over every house, and everyone was looking for only one person, Badanna. She was already preparing for something she had never faced before, the brute force of nature.

She had some protection spells, but the city of Súilleabháin was too populated, she was running low on options, so she use a manipulation spell to divert all the water that came down from the mountains to surround the city, this prevented the problems from becoming even bigger.

There were several mages in the city, and they had already organized an escape route for the population, along with the guild members of that city, thanks to Badanna's magic, a safer route was created, but the rain didn't stop falling, and the visibility it was very bad because of the dense clouds, not a ray of moonlight passed through those clouds. And the water was already above 1 meter throughout the city, in a short time the water would cover all the houses.

After a few hours, fatigue was already present in the younger members of the guild, and they feared, as an escape from there seemed to be impossible for those who did not have much superhuman physical ability.

Looking at the despair and fear of those young adventurers, Badanna started to breathe stronger, that's when Badanna created a new magic, he gathered all the magic power he had and managed to create a transformation magic, and changed the density of water, turning into steam ice, practically all the water that was almost covering people's houses, completely turned all that water into a cloud, and these clouds went at high speed to the heights, and dissipated the dark clouds.

Even the rivers that flowed through the city dried up.

The act of Badanna Gioia was welcomed throughout the kingdom, but that incident had several consequences, the formation of the rivers changed drastically, many rivers that passed through that city ended up being diverted, and much of the water that came down from the hills was also diverted completely, that amount of icy clouds altered the entire rainfall formation of the kingdom, causing many out of season rains, and destabilizing all agriculture, causing almost three years of crisis and many economic changes.

Even though she saved the city, and hundreds of thousands of lives that lived there, many blamed Badanna for the crisis and the losses and changes in the river routes, the day of that incident, was the last time that Badanna Gioia was in the city of Súilleabháin."
