Chapter 6: The Pale Goddess

Chapter 6: The Pale Goddess

A tiny formless blob of light existed in the vast darkness. Comfortable and unmoving. It had no thoughts really, just pure instincts. Instincts that told the light to eat. But there was nothing besides the darkness, so it had tried to eat the darkness. But how could it eat the darkness? Its instincts told her to use its mouth, but there was no mouth. It had struggled for a long time trying to eat the darkness without any results. It wasn't able to eat the darkness, at least not in the way its instincts told it. It had asked the instinct what it meant to eat, the instincts had answered that to eat was to accept food within for sustenance. So it had accepted a tiny part of darkness within, and grown just a tiny bit. The tiny blob had continued to grow, but no matter how much it grew it stayed tiny compared to the vast darkness. The instincts never gave up, urging her to keep consuming the darkness until only the blob of light existed. This had gone smoothly for some time until the darkness had detected what the tiny light was doing. It had become furious and had begun to eat the tiny light. The blob had struggled but what it could do against an enemy of such magnitude? Its instincts only told it to eat, and so it had done just that. Eventually, a balance had been created.

Its instincts told it that the balance wasn't good for it and it should eat faster, but the blob was already giving its all. It was then, that a new voice had emerged. The new voice had told her something that it couldn't understand. The voice had given it an offer. But the tiny blob couldn't understand the offer so it had asked its instincts on what to do. The instincts, as usual, told it to eat the offer. Well, that was easy to do. The tiny blob of light had learned how to eat, so it had eaten the offer. But something had gone wrong. The tiny blob had rapidly expanded, consuming the darkness at a far greater rate. Finally, a consciousness awakened in the tiny light or rather the tiny light itself became a big consciousness capable of thoughts. Before it could understand and make sense of what was going on. The voice whispered to it again, it congratulated the tiny blob of light for awakening. Its instinct told it to eat the voice. That was a tasty suggestion but this time, it didn't just do what the instincts told it to do. The instincts had competition now. The consciousness generated thoughts that evaluated the instincts and judged that while it was totally possible to eat the voice, it was not the best course of action. The voice had helped it grow in a way that the instincts alone couldn't.

Something snapped and the consciousness was ejected out of the space it occupied. Its thoughts slowed down, and even the instincts faded into the background. But soon the instincts returned with double the ferocity. With instincts came new sensations and feelings. The thoughts started to flow rapidly. With thoughts came the knowledge that was hidden within. Its thoughts were not able to comprehend all of the knowledge at once, so it used the old trick it had learned. It started with a tiny bit of knowledge and processed it. It got some basic understanding of self and the world, but the action seemed to have exhausted the consciousness. Giving up on eating the rest of knowledge, it focused on the new sensations.

It twitched its eyelids and opened them. It was inside an egg. There was darkness but unlike the familiar one, it could see through this one. There were egg walls surrounding it, it stretched its body and tried to break the wall. Not quite yet familiar with its own, it wasn't able to bring forth all the strength to bear. So it ate the walls. No! not it but she. She felt that she was she and not it or something else. So she swallowed the surroundings. But she didn't eat the walls physically, instead, she just absorbed a part of them as a form of energy. but unlike the darkness, the walls didn't just disappear inside her. They grew hollow and brittle and just crumbled down.

Finally, she saw the world. It was beautiful, the green trees, the colourful flowers and the dark beast. She narrowed her eyes. This dark beast was the source of the darkness that had tried to eat her. The beast seemed to have been knocked out due to exhaustion. Well, that didn't matter. She had decided to eat it.

The beast was big and had two menacing fangs. To her, it seemed that this beast's body followed the rule of two. It had two legs, two wings and two horns as well as two eyes. Well, she also had two eyes but she didn't have any legs or wings.

Unlike the walls of the egg, the beast was a multicoloured feast. She could see three different coloured energies within the beast. Red, dark and golden. She started with the golden energy but the beast had stirred and awoke. It resisted her pull on the golden energy and charged at her, she panicked and her instincts kicked in. Her body became ethereal, the beast couldn't even touch her but she could touch the beast. The energy absorption rate had increased as soon as she had made contact with the beast's body. The beast was already exhausted so it didn't take much time before it fell on the ground, unable to move. She quickly ate the other two energies as well. As soon as she finished, A mysterious voice whispered in her ear:

[Congratulations! You have slain a level 5 [Shadow Hawk (G)]. You have earned 154 XP! Levelled up to level 3. You have earned 6 free stat points.]

That was familiar. It was the same voice that had helped her against the darkness. She asked it to repeat what it said, and it did. But she still didn't understand what it meant.

She rested for a while on the dark beast's body. Compared to it, she was small. She was tiny. But so what, she will grow up one day. She was not scared of the big world at all. She decided to explore the jungle. Although she didn't have any legs, she moved fast. She didn't need any legs, as her body always hovered above the ground, never touching it. She moved through the jungle, picking a random direction.

Eventually, she found something. A building structure stood in the middle of nowhere, shrouded in mist and mystery. A new emotion rose within her, it tingled her consciousness. Curiosity. It urged her to explore the unknown in front of her. To seek answers to what and how. Intrigued, she approached the structure, to try and enter.

[ Quest area access denied. You do not satisfy the conditions to enter. ]

The voice whispered as she felt something invisible blocking her advance. She tried to enter from the other side but the invisible barrier was all around the building. She just wanted to look inside and see what this structure was. The invisible barrier was interesting but frustrating. Frustration was giving rise to another emotion in her. Anger. Sure, she now knew that something like invisible barriers existed in the world. But she didn't know how to overcome these barriers. With time, she grew tired and angry.

Frustrated, she turned to her instinct, which told her to eat. So, she ate the invisible thing that was stopping her. She ate and ate, without any break. Eventually, she could eat no more but the invisible barriers still barred her path, seeming full of infinite energy. Tired and full, she felt drowsy. She would continue her task later; first, she would go to sleep.

She fell asleep, dreaming of becoming a grown-up, big enough to eat all the barriers and replace them to surround the building structure all by herself. Unknown to her, her dream manifested as an illusion of a white snake peacefully sleeping coiled around the building.
