Chapter 1: The Crisis

Chapter 1: The Crisis

After reading everything on the blue screens, Jac could not stop looking at his stats. He was pathetically weak if all this mayhem wasn't an illusion. Maybe he shouldn't have ignored it when his friend Tony asked him to go to the gym together. As an introvert, he always avoided any place where people interacted with each other. He tolerated other people only in his part-time job and during chess games.

Never before had he felt a need to physically get stronger. but now, he had this desire to do something, anything so that he could become powerful and increase his stats. Before he could do anything though, he heard a scream and bestial roars. He immediately ran to the glass window of his room to peek outside and saw a strange bipedal creature no taller than a German shepherd with torn skin and red muscles visible. The slightly hunched creature had two sharp horns and three broken bones jutting out of its back. it was crunching on the skull of a woman, likely the one who screamed. Jac's eyes widened and he realized the severity of the situation. He tried to think of what to do next. He used to keep a handgun and a meat cleaver he bought from a convenience store. He ran to fetch both the items that could possibly save his life if whatever he was seeing wasn't a hallucination. Jac kept his gun unloaded. He quickly searched for the bullets and found the bullet pack with 50 rounds.

When he returned back to the window though, the monster was gone and the body of the lady was gone as well. He could still see the blood on the pavement though. Feeling uneasy, he started loading the bullets into the magazine. He managed to load only 11 bullets before suddenly something crashed through the window. It was the body of the woman.

Jac rushed back and put his back to the wall as he saw the strange monster climb into the room through the broken window. As adrenaline started coursing through his blood, he felt the gravity of the situation. He could die here. It was true that he was considering suicide just a day ago, but now? Now he felt a strange excitement. Before he could think more about himself and the situation, the small monster lunged at him.

Jac fired five rounds at the monster but the creature, bleeding through all the holes the bullets created on its body and still unfazed, rammed its horns in his left leg. He felt sharp biting pain in his leg as the monster, with its horns still stuck in Jac's legs, clawed at his thighs. Feeling even more pain and seeing his own blood spilling, he quickly fired the remaining bullets into the head of the monster. The monster's body went limp, and as he relaxed assuming the monster was dead, it snarled and bit on his leg but was unable to do anything else. Feeling immense pain, Jac tried to hit the monster with the butt of the handgun but to no avail. Jac dragged himself towards the window and grabbed the meat cleaver. He attacked the monster's neck multiple times and severed the monster's head. Before he could do anything else, there was a blinding flash of warm light. he closed his eyes on instincts but felt a soothing sensation coursing throughout his body. He felt his wounds closing and healing as he saw another blue screen pop up in front of him.

It seemed that he got some kinda of reward from the system. Very sceptical of all the strange 'Holy Mother' theme going on in the system messages, Jac took stock of his body. He wasn't feeling any pain now and even felt better than before. The skull of the monster was still stuck in his leg. Although, his jeans were shredded while the wounds on his thighs were gone like a monster never tore and clawed at his thighs. Suddenly Jac panicked, the skull of the monster was still stuck to his leg. The wounds around the horn were closed so perfectly that the horns seemed to be part of his leg. He tried to pull out the skull of the monster but failed to do so.

Before Jac could try anything else, the jaw of the monster moved. It opened and then closed. Panicking even more, Jac again tried to pull the monster's head out while being aware that doing so would make him bleed profusely. Bleeding could be stopped but he dreaded getting an unknown infection in his leg.

Unable to pull out the head, Jac tried to chop the horns to at least get rid of the skull. But he failed miserably as no matter how hard he struck, the horns refused to even chip. Unable to think of anything else, Jac dragged himself to the kitchen and lit the skull of the monster aflame. He stopped the fire as all the flesh on the monster's head turned to ashes. strangely though, the horns felt cold to the touch. Jack felt no problem walking with the monster skull attached just below his knees.

Jac sat down on his gaming chair and tried to make sense of what had happened in the past 10 or so minutes. Jac tried to think of the blue screens and they popped up in front of him. Reading through everything, Jac understood one thing. Their world had changed dramatically, and it was both fascinating and dreadful.
