Chapter 2

After leaving the orphanage, I found myself alone in the woods that were nearby. Now that I had the freedom to move around by myself without the need for someone to help me, I decided to explore the outside world, with my “new” healthy body.

I started to calm down after a few minutes of resting to catch my breath. I then looked around the forest and realized that my eyesight seemed to have improved as I could now make out some smaller details of the world around me. Things seemed calm in the forest, almost like it was its own separate world, away from all the chaos going on right outside its borders. It could've been my imagination but it was almost as if there was some kind of invisible barrier or force field keeping the monsters out of it.

I took a walk in a random direction to explore the forest. I saw birds flying around and it was fascinating as I could see them flap their wings in what felt like slow motion if I focused in on them. I also found that my hearing grew better as I could hear many different sounds around the forest but did not see where they were coming from exactly. I could also choose to focus on certain sounds that I wanted to hear and block out others just like how I could focus on those birds.

I continued to walk around the forest for hours as it was oddly satisfying and calming for me. Soon the sun went down and the forest grew dark. I noticed that I wasn't very tired or hungry despite walking around the forest all day and not eating anything. It felt like I had way more energy than I normally did which could've been due to the adrenaline running through my veins from earlier but part of me felt that it was more than that.

I decided that I should rest for the day since it was night time, but man it was hard to fall asleep. My mind kept thinking back to what happened when that message popped up. I kept on wondering what happened to everyone else after the monsters attacked the orphanage. Was everyone okay? Did they make it out safely? Did someone come to help them? I missed Jessica too. Feelings of guilt were beginning to creep in now as I was laying down and thinking about what happened. I just ran away like a coward in a hurry to save myself without thinking about saving or helping the others. I decided that I would go back to the orphanage the next day and see if there was anything I could do to help.

Eventually I drifted off into an uneven sleep with much difficulty and woke up at dawn. I wasn't sure how long I had slept for, but I didn't feel tired at all. Nor did I feel hungry which I found a little bit odd but pushed that thought aside and headed back towards where the orphanage was. Don't ask me how I knew where it was after wandering around the woods with no way to keep track. I just did. It was like some kind of intuition or something like that.

I reached the edge of the forest. I squinted my eyes as the sun shone brightly to the branches. My instincts told me that I no longer like being out in the sunlight but rather preferred sticking to the shady areas. Even though my instincts told me that I don't like being in the sunlight, I knew it would only cause me discomfort and no real harm would come from it.

As I finished reading what was on the blue screen, I grew increasingly shocked and worried. I blinked in surprise and rubbed my eyes to make sure I wasn't hallucinating, but sure enough, to both my excitement and dismay, the screen still read; Race: Vampire (E+). I was excited because I loved all things vampire related. Books with vampires in them were always enjoyable with adventure, romance, and other things. The only problem right now was that this wasn't a fantasy book setting. This was reality.

I had read quite a lot about the dangers of being a vampire in fantasy novels. No wonder my body desperately wanted to avoid the sun. I dreaded the thought of spending my days living in some dark castle, feasting on peoples’ blood. I would have to worry about turning to ashes under the sun or melt from holy water, or a whole bunch of other threats. Luckily it looked like I wouldn't turn to ashes from the sunlight.

As that thought settled in, I started to worry a bit about what my life might be like from now on. I remembered reading about all the weaknesses about vampires and the many ways to die, and a shiver ran down my spine at the thought of that.

I knew that some of the pros about being a vampire are real as I had indeed enhanced senses, so I thought that I should test out if I had super speed and strength. I then decided to check my current strength and chose a good solid thick tree and punched it with my first. It was a bad idea. My hand hurt so bad and it looked like I broke some fingers. I winced and looked at the tree.

Check and check, I had super strength and super fast healing abilities, as my hand was already healing at a rapid pace and the trunk had a nice solid hole in it. Sadly I didn't have the super tough steel like skin that was portrayed in some vampire stories. Maybe that will happen later on.

I decided it was time to go back and see what happened to the orphanage and see if there were any survivors.
