Let me just make this clear from the start.
I didn’t ask for this.
All I wanted was to live a normal life.
Find a job, not too much work, a good salary, and nice coworkers.
Get married later and have children. Grow old and hopefully see my grandchildren then pass away peacefully.
But alas…. It seemed that God had other plans.
My name is Felix Hart. First off, I was born as a sickly baby and grew up as a sickly child. I was in the hospital for most of my childhood because I was so sick. My parents left me at an orphanage by the time I reached 5 years old. They got sick of paying the hospital money when they couldn’t cure me of whatever illness I had. The people at this orphanage were rather nice. There was one girl who was like an older sister to me, Jessica. It’s been so long since she died.
I had to stay in bed the whole time though. It was boring. I went outside in a wheelchair with Jess. She would push me down the hallway and outside sometimes. We would look at the plant beds and have a short conversation about random things until it was time to go back in and after that, it was back to bed for me. That was my daily life before I turned 18.
Around the age of 18. The world suddenly changed. Even though I was bedridden for the first 18 years of my life, that didn’t mean I was stupid. Oh no. Far from it. Jess taught me how to read and after that, I’d always ask for books for my birthday and Christmas gifts. So I was pretty smart if I do say so myself. I knew how the world worked outside of that little orphanage where I grew up.
That’s why when I saw monsters appear in front of the car one day while driving with Jess to the hospital, I knew something was up. I was pretty certain that there were never monsters in the world that would kill people with knives or something new at that time, magic spells. Magic and monsters only existed in video games up until that day.
I’ll never forget that day. It was the day Jess died. Monsters appeared suddenly without notice. They killed many people that day. Military weapons could only do so much. Everyone went into the nearest building. Families were separated. Family members were lost. It was the safest day in earth’s history. It was also the day I had changed into something else. Something different.
God had messed with me again. Why couldn’t he just let me be a normal healthy human boy when I was born? And why did he make me like this now? That’s what I’m trying to understand.
Anyways. The day the world changed. I guess that’s where my story started.
It was just a normal day at the orphanage. Kids were laughing, screaming, and crying. Some were playing fighting and running around playing games. Adults came and went around the orphanage to see if their special child was there. Some kids found a home that day. I do wonder how it went with all the chaos that would ensue later.
Oops, I got sidetracked. So Jess was now 21. She had a nice job as a secretary for a big company. It was her day off so she decided to drive me to the hospital instead of one of the orphanage staff members.

It was a nice drive. We were jamming to some old Beatles songs and having a nice talk about how she was doing with her new job. She sounded very happy. The drive was pretty normal until we reached the bridge. There was traffic as usual. Driving into the city is always a pain. Driving to any major city is a pain, no questions asked. And it was in this traffic when monsters appeared out of nowhere. Monsters appeared around the world in random places in batches. Some were lucky and others weren't so lucky.
We were one of the unlucky people of course. A goblin had to spawn right in front of us. I mean seriously. What luck was that? Jess tried to protect me since I couldn’t move much. I wasn’t paralyzed or anything. My problem just made me very stiff and have slow jerky movements. I wanted to fight that goblin and protect Jess but my stupid body didn't do as I wanted it to! So I had to watch Jess be killed by that stupid hateful goblin. She fell down on top of me and I screamed at the top of my lungs. And of course….. just as the goblin was going to kill me, time froze.
I got some sort of blue screen in front of me that popped up out of nowhere and it gave me a message and two options which I found ridiculous.
Hello young man! How has it been going so far? I’m someone that you might call ‘God’ in your world. I am the God of the Underworld. No, not Hades or King Yama, just the god of the underworld. I have watched you your whole life and you interest me quite a bit. So I decided to give you two options.
1. Become my apostle and follow my will.
You will be able to use the powers of mine though very much weakened, but still be able to save your world from almost certain doom. You will be able to move just like all your fellow humans and be worshiped by all of humanity!
2. Reject my goodwill (though I’d prefer it if you didn’t)
I’ll grant you the cure to your illness, but you won’t gain any of my powers or be famous or anything and there could be some side effects that could change your life for worse or better, after all, gods aren't supposed to interfere with mortals, especially the weakest mortals in existence, humans.
I have never done this before so it's up to you. Normally the options would be, "Become my apostle or reject my offer and die" but since you entertained me for these past few years, I’ll cure your illness with side effects more or less. After all, the God of the Underworld isn't supposed to be meddling with the living world.
When I saw that last message pop up on the screen my mind just immediately went blank. I was wondering what was wrong with this guy? Watching me suffer like that and not lifting a hand until now? Does he suddenly think that he should be thanked? Geez. What a bastard.
And well, me being me, I obviously rejected his offer of becoming his apostle. To me, all I ever wanted was to be a nobody. Someone in the background. Kind of like an extra in those movies, there but not there. I never wanted to be in the spotlight as I said at the start. I just wanted to live a normal life and so, yeah... I pressed option two. The message changed and a new one popped up.
I am disappointed in you young man, but I guess it is your choice. Since you have chosen to not become my apostle, I shall keep my word and cure your illness. I shall now teleport you back to your home and you shall wake up tomorrow all cured, but there will be side effects most definitely. Goodbye for now. Have fun! Oh! I almost forgot to tell you something. There are 4 other people that I have chosen to be my apostles and they also rejected me so all of the folks will be in the same boat as you.
After I finished reading, smoke came out of nowhere and I blacked out. Then, the next thing I knew I woke up in my bed in the orphanage. When I first woke up I tried to move my body and I could! I thought that what happened earlier was just some crazy lucid dream of sorts and when I found out I could move my body, I thought that I was still in that crazy dream. I wanted to wake up so I could see Jess again and she could comfort me. Reassure me that she was alright.
Sadly it wasn't a dream. The orphanage got attacked in the afternoon. I was able to get away from that place. Honestly, I was in too much shock to remember exactly how I managed to escape from there, but I did.
