Chapter 2: The new life

After passing through the wormhole for a little while longer, he saw a planet. It was enormous. He could see faint similarities with his own earth but this planet was at least 10 times bigger.

He couldn’t admire it for too long. His speed was too fast and he quickly reached on an alley and slammed in the collapsed body of a youth.

From the bird’s eyed view he could see that the civilization level on this planet was low. He didn’t have time to see too much, but what he saw left him feeling cold. There were wars everywhere. People were fighting with swords and riding horses. He believed he saw someone using magic, but he wasn’t too sure. He didn’t know if this world had something fantastic like that or not.

The youth in whose body he ended up in was dirty and thin. Malnourished even. He was lying in the fetal position on a piece of cloth. He was also wearing rags.

When Chuck’s soul entered the body he suddenly felt a piercing pain in his head. It was different from the pain of having his memories wiped. That was a spiritual pain. This time it was physical. The pain didn’t last long. Right after his brain received the signal, he didn’t even get to scream that the pain was gone.

A normal soul would never feel pain when reincarnating. Aside from the fact that a wiped soul does not have a conscience, the memories of the body merge with the soul in a harmonious way.

The fact that his soul was already “colored” provoked a reaction from the body. It attempted to replace the color of the soul with it previous soul color. If it was an ordinary soul, it would have worked, but Chuck’s soul was too strong. He merely stored the memories in his mind like another simulation of his life. Only, now the life he would relive in that simulation was the life of this body.

Chuck struggled to open his eyes and move his body. He felt weak, and extremely hungry. He hurriedly played the body’s memories in his mind. He needed to understand his situation as soon as possible.

As he did that he went in a trance. He no longer saw and heard what was happening outside. As he now was pressed for time, he opted to make the “dream” as fast as possible.

From the memories he first found out his new name. Arthur. There was no surname. His mother and father were killed by the soldiers when he was 7 because his mother bumped into a noble. This information made the Chuck who had modern day principles disgusted, but he continued. He also learned about the most impressive thing in this world. The System.

It was an interface like in games with stats and skills. Apparently this world worked like some king of videogame. There were even monsters that could give experience to increase your level.

Arthur, as a street urchin didn’t have too many information about this. He only knew about his own stats and that to increase in level he had to kill monsters. All his life he lived by working for different people in this town. Not many were inclined to employ him, and those that were would only give him a piece of bread at the end of the day.

The reason he died was simple, hunger. He was not hired for three entire weeks. He could not even go into the forest outside the town because he was too weak and at the edge were horned rabbits. Level 1 monsters.

Chuck felt that Arthur’s life was extremely sad. Taking over his body, he wanted to do something for him. He had no living relatives that he knew of so he could only do one thing.

“I’ll live a full life for you!” his voice was hoarse and throat sore, but he still said his piece.

He knew that he could no longer be Chuck. Even if there were not many people who knew Arthur, there were enough to force him to become Arthur himself.

Aside for this he was also excited at the prospect of a “gamer” life. He read novels in his previous life and he knew about this type of setting, but he never expected it to happen.

(A/N: From now on Chuck will be called Arthur most of the time.)

[Just like I never expected to run into a suicide bomber!] Screamed Arthur in his mind.

He adapted quickly to this change. The countless years spent in the void made his mind extremely flexible and resilient.

After finishing with the memories, Arthur regained his vision and hearing. He was still in the fetal position, on the piece of cloth.

Trying to stand up, he was assaulted with pain in his stomach and extreme hunger. He expected this, but the pain was on a completely different level from the slight hunger of not eating for 1 day that he experienced in his college life.

Quickly gathering his taught, he incredibly pushed through the pain and stood up in a sitting position. It wasn’t as if he no longer felt pain, it was just that he choose not to think of it. As his mind was quite developed, it allowed him a bit of respite from the pain.

Even if he lessened the pain a bit, he still needed to quickly find something to eat and drink, but, there was something that made him willing to accept the delay.

[Stats] Like how he remembered the original doing it, he taught the word and of himself.

Immediately a blue window popped up in front of him.

Arthur was flabbergasted. His stats were the same as in the memories so there was no surprise there. The real surprise was the skills. Both of them were amazing, especially Create. A skill more broken than this could not possibly exist.

He almost wanted to shout that there would be no balance if there are skill this powerful, but then he realized. He was not in a game. This was life, life is not balance.

He forced himself to calm down for a second and looked again trough the original’s memories. He quickly found what he needed. When Arthur was little, his mother would tell him stories of heroes. Almost all heroes had a “Talent”. A special skill that he was born with.

Almost all Talents were overpowered. One of the heroes in his mother’s stories were about a man who could control dragons.

He didn’t know if the stories were true or not, but his Talents were definitely overpowered.

He also found a piece of information from those memories that made him frown. All skills, even Talents, are tanked from 10 to 1. One being the best of all. Some skills evolve as they get higher in level but there is no information in his head about a rank 0. Still he didn’t think too much about it. The previous Arthur had limited knowledge about these matters.

He also deduced from the wording of the Create Talent that it was, most probably, because of his soul. He was now sure that his soul was strengthened beyond measure in the void, but he still didn’t know why he survived there. Maybe he would never know.

As he was thinking those things, the pain in his stomach assaulted him again. This brought him back to reality. He had to find something to eat.

Thinking of finding food, he suddenly had an idea. His Talent said he could turn mana into anything. Wouldn’t that mean he could turn it into food?

Accessing his proved to not be that difficult. Thinking of creating a bowl of porridge, because he had starved for so long, an image appeared in his mind. Next to it there was an equal and a number. 2.3. This made Arthur despair for a second before he realized. In his image he wasn’t creating just the porridge, he was also creating a metal bowl and a spoon.

Readjusting his image to make just a mouthful of the porridge, he was surprised to see that it only cost him 0.1 mana.

He immediately accepted the exchange and made the warm porridge appear in his mouth. He slowly ate the mouthful, afraid that he would injure his stomach even further.

He continued this process 10 times until he had no mana left.

He obviously wasn’t full, but he was a lot better than before. By his calculations the mana should be renewed in 20 minutes. He wanted to go to the well in the middle of the town to get a drink of water, but he quickly abandoned that idea because of the pain he was in.

He stood in the same position for the next 2 hours. Eating porridge and drinking water. To make water it was still 0.1, the quantity was even higher.

After eating and drinking his fill, the [Hunger] status was no longer there, but his Health did not increase. He was still plagued by pain, not only in his stomach but in his whole body.

That was when he got a crazy idea. He knew that if this worked, all his problems will be solved.

He imagined a healing potion. An object only found in games. He obviously know how it worked, what he didn’t know was if it worked in reality.

Focusing for a second, he was surprised to find that the image appeared. 1 Health Potion would cost him 15 mana. The cost was extremely high for him, but he didn’t give up. He did as with the food. First he only imagined the liquid. It was still too high, 10 mana points. Thinking of this, the reduced the amount to only 10 percent.

He was elated to see that it worked. He could make 10% of a health potion with 1 mp. He was a bit afraid of the effect. Eating something untested was not the best idea, but he needed to get healthier.

Without any more hesitation, he created the liquid in his mouth and drank it. A warm feeling surged out of his stomach and spread throughout his whole body. After feeling that warmth for a couple of seconds he opened his status screen. Sure enough his Health raised by 10%.

He repeated the process 4 more times and was at 87% Health. The pain was now only an itch. By now he had spent 7 hours in this world and only stood in this little alley. The sun was also came down, and night settled in.

He filled his time watching other people pass by his little alley. It some people looked at him but it was only a fleeting glance. He wanted to explore the city and look at the Level 1 monsters, Horned Rabbit, and see how strong they were, but decided to wait until the new day. Having used his mana over and over, in addition to the constant pain, he was too tired to do anything. He looked at the System Clock, and it was 9:34. Only 1 minute till his mana will fill again.

Having drunk the last mouthful of health potion, he was almost 100% healed. If he had a good night rest he should be in full health tomorrow.
