Chapter 45

Maya slumped against her desk, the weight of Trevor’s confession pressing heavily on her shoulders. She knew she couldn’t just drop this lead, but the thought of betraying Trevor by revealing her source was gnawing at her. And what about Angelo? Would he think she’d taken advantage of his trust? This whole mess could jeopardize her budding friendship with him or create a rift between him and Trevor. It was a tricky situation, and Maya realized she might have to approach it in a way she hadn't considered before.

Just then, the door creaked open, and a familiar voice cut through her thoughts. "Are you trying to seduce me with the dim light and sultry music?" Steve leaned against the doorframe with a teasing smirk. "Because if you are, I’m flattered, but just so you know, I’ve got a girlfriend."

Maya rolled her eyes and flicked off the music before drawing the blinds back up. "Don’t be ridiculous. You weren’t even supposed to be here until after lunch."

Steve strolled in, closing the door behind him. "Ah, so I didn’t interrupt some secret rendezvous with Turner, did I?"

For a moment, Maya was baffled. Then she remembered the half-baked lie she’d told Steve and groaned, burying her face in her hands. This was going to be a whole new set of problems.

Steve, misinterpreting her reaction, burst into laughter. "Go, Maya! Get your man!"

Maya shot him a sharp look through her fingers. "Shut up."

Shaking her head, she cleared her throat and tried to focus. "So, what’s with the early visit?"

Steve's expression turned serious. "You know how I never asked why you’re hanging out with Jason and the gang after they ditched you a few months back? It’s cool, really—it’s your personal life. But," he said, pulling an envelope from his jacket, "I think you should reconsider spending time with Lang and his crew."

Maya’s eyes narrowed as she took the envelope, her curiosity piqued. She opened it cautiously and pulled out a series of photos. As she flipped through them, her brow furrowed in confusion. The images showed a wooded area close to Wilson’s Farm, but there was something unsettling about them. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw a familiar face.

"Steve!" Maya’s voice wavered as she looked up from the photos, her horror evident. "I told you not to investigate that wolf anymore! What if you’d gotten hurt? I wouldn’t have even—"

Steve placed a firm hand on her shoulders, his gaze steady. "Just keep looking."

Maya’s hands trembled as she sifted through the pictures. As the sequence unfolded, she saw a figure emerging from behind a tree. Her breath caught as she recognized the person—Clarissa Jackson. Maya’s stomach churned as she continued, her eyes widening in disbelief.

In the photos, Clarissa and the wolf moved closer together. Then, the wolf’s fur seemed to dissolve, revealing a naked woman underneath. The woman picked up the discarded fur and draped it over herself. Clarissa and the woman chatted for a while before Clarissa left. The woman then transformed back into the wolf and disappeared into the woods.

Maya’s hands shook uncontrollably as she returned to the first picture, her mind reeling. "I know," Steve’s voice was somber as he tightened his grip on her shoulders. "Lang’s psycho aunt is in league with that... werewolf. I’m sticking to that theory even though you said the lunar cycle didn’t match. You need to stay away from that group. You’re obviously in danger."

Maya's breath came in short gasps as the gravity of the situation sank in. The photos slipped from her fingers as she reached out and clutched Steve’s arm.

Steve was taken aback, his hands awkwardly raised as if unsure how to comfort her. "I didn’t realize it’d hit you this hard," he said, patting her back awkwardly.

Maya looked up at him, her voice barely a whisper. "Steve... that’s my mother."
