Chapter 22: Bridging the Gap

The battlefield was eerily silent, save for the soft hum of the disabled mech as it sputtered and smoked in the background. Vera stared at the stranger before her. His armor gleamed under the dim sunlight, pulsing faintly with a technology that seemed both alien and impossibly advanced.

“Who are you?” Vera asked, still gripping her blade tightly. Her Interface Glove highlighted the figure in amber, marking him as an unknown entity.

The man tilted his head slightly, a curious smile playing on his lips. “A survivor. Much like yourself, I assume.”

Vera didn’t lower her weapon. “Survivors don’t take down war machines with a single shot.”

The man chuckled softly, his tone surprisingly disarming. “True. But where I come from, we’ve had to get creative to stay alive.” He raised his hands slowly, palms outward in a gesture of peace. “I’m not here to fight you. I’m here to help.”

“Help?” Vera repeated skeptically. “You just happened to wander into a battlefield and decided to ‘help’?”

“Not exactly.” His gaze flicked to the sky, where distant flashes of light indicated more Coalition forces were inbound. “Your little skirmish drew quite a bit of attention. Let’s just say I have a vested interest in keeping them out of this sector.”

Before Vera could respond, Kaelin’s voice crackled through her comm. “Vera! What’s going on? We’re pinned down near the second artillery site.”

“Got… a situation,” Vera replied, keeping her eyes on the stranger. “Hold tight. I’ll be there soon.”

“You might want to move quickly,” the man said, gesturing toward the approaching Coalition reinforcements. His HUD—a sleek, holographic display projected from his gauntlet—flickered to life, showing multiple incoming units.

Vera hesitated. Trusting a complete stranger wasn’t exactly on her to-do list, but she couldn’t deny that his abilities and tech could turn the tide. She made a decision. “Alright, survivor. You want to help? Prove it.”

The man grinned. “Gladly.”

----------------------------------------

The duo sprinted across the battlefield, dodging debris and Coalition patrols. The stranger moved with precision, his armor augmenting his speed and reflexes. Vera noticed his weapon—a sleek, compact rifle that emitted a faint blue glow—seemed to discharge energy rather than bullets.

“What’s your name?” Vera asked as they ducked behind a crumbled wall for cover.

“Call me Jax,” he replied, scanning the area with his gauntlet. “And you?”

“Vera.”

“Well, Vera, you’ve got a problem up ahead.” Jax pointed to a towering Coalition turret that had locked onto Kaelin’s position. “That thing’s going to shred your friends if we don’t deal with it.”

Vera’s Interface Glove pinged with a new objective:

----------------------------------------

Dynamic Event: Disable Coalition Defense Turret.

* Objective: Overload the turret’s power core.

* Rewards: XP, Resource Cache (1/5).

----------------------------------------

“I’m open to suggestions,” Vera said.

Jax smirked. “Follow my lead.”

The two moved in tandem, weaving through enemy fire. Jax’s rifle emitted a sharp crack as he took out enemy drones with pinpoint accuracy. Vera activated Resonance Field, shielding them from a stray missile.

“Cover me,” Jax instructed as they reached the turret’s base. He knelt beside a glowing panel, his gauntlet interfacing with the turret’s systems.

“Thirty seconds,” he said.

“Better make it twenty,” Vera muttered, deflecting a Coalition soldier’s strike with her blade. She countered with a charged slash, the Core energy slicing through his armor.

The turret whirred ominously, its barrel beginning to rotate.

“Jax!”

“Done!” Jax shouted, pulling back as the turret emitted a high-pitched whine. Moments later, it exploded in a blinding flash, taking out nearby enemies.

----------------------------------------

Objective Complete: Disable Coalition Defense Turret.

* XP Gained: 500

* Resource Cache Secured (1/5).

----------------------------------------

Jax dusted himself off as the smoke cleared. “Not bad, huh?”

“Not bad,” Vera admitted, though she was still wary. “Let’s see if you can keep up.”

Together, they made their way toward Kaelin’s position, the battlefield growing more chaotic with each step.
