The Consequences of being Thrown in a Well

Wasn't Really Paying Any Attention

“This doesn’t make any sense!” Lucan said with a sigh.

Lucan had been learning how to read for 10 days so far and he still didn't understand anything besides the fact that these weird little scribbles meant sounds.

“Well of course it’s confusing it’s only been ten days,” Hamlin put a hand to his forehead, “It takes people at least a year to learn when they’re kids. Being an adult definitely doesn’t make it easier.”

Lucan looked around him, noticing it was dark as the void outside. He hadn’t even been able to practice in the house for the first five days. Once he had been granted permission to come in he realized it was much bigger and luxurious inside then the exterior had led him to believe. When he had asked Lucan about it he had just been brushed off every single time.

“Lucan I have another way I could teach you, but I need to know something first. Have you ever seen floating words showing up in front of you?” Hamlin asked.

“Yes I saw them once,” Lucan thought on it for a moment, “ it was the same day that I met you. Though that was also the day I came here. I believe that it should be okay to tell you this. I’m not from this world, or at least not this country. One night I was thrown down a well, and when I woke I was in some grass fields a few leagues away from here.”

Hamlin looked down on the ground while his mind turned at this revelation. If what Lucan was saying was true then this could have huge impacts around the kingdom. To try to confirm what Lucan had said was true, Hamlin decided to ask him a few more questions.

“What was the name of the place you came from? I need the name of your world and the name of the town.”

“I come from a world called Earth and my town was called Winchester.”

“Considering the fact that you answered those quickly and had that much confidence, I believe that what you said is true. And going by that information I can all but confirm that you are indeed from a different world. We call this place Eden, not Earth.”

When Lucan heard this he felt a dull sense of loss, which then blossomed into a sense of freedom. He had no true friends before, and all of his family had passed. And on the other hand, he could leave all of his regret and actions behind. There wasn’t anyone weighing him down and holding him back. He could make a new life for himself. The thought brought a shine to his eyes that hadn't been there for many years.

“Lucan? Hello? Did you zone out? This isn’t the time to be zoning out. Your whole life is stuck here and you know nothing about it. We have much to learn and you said the words showed up before you. Do you remember what they said?”

“I remember that there was something that said ‘welcome’ and I think there was something that said ‘system’ but if I remember correctly that was it. Maybe there was something saying ‘tutorial’ but I’m not sure.”

Hamlin’s eyes lit up, “That message likely said ‘Welcome to Eden, you have been introduced to the system.’ That part is common but a small number of people get an extension asking if they want a tutorial. These people are almost always very successful rulers or adventurers. Of course there are a few who take more sinister paths but they all are very powerful and have great influence on the world around them.

“These people are given the option to say yes or no. Those who click yes usually end up as the ones actually being successful. The people who choose no are all but unheard of, but there’s no one truly of note among them. Were you given two options when you came to this world?”

“I was given two options, yes. I clicked one but I really have no idea which one it was since I wasn’t really paying any attention when I pressed it.”

“Lucan I need you to say quests while thinking of those same words from earlier right now. That will show you all of your current quests. If there's something there then you accepted. If there isn’t then you’ll have to go without the tutorial.”

Lucan did as he was requested to do and a blue box appeared in front of him, blocking most of vision. The word “Quests” was in the top right corner and beneath it was a completely empty box. There was nothing at all on the screen in front of him besides that one word, taunting him.

Noticing the instant disappointment on Lucan's face, he went to comfort him. “Hey kiddo, it’s alright. It was honestly kind of unfair–”
