**Chapter Four**
Magic. What was it, really? After sifting through my memories some more, I learned that magic could be divided into nine tiers. As dragons age, they naturally gain access to higher tiers of magic, but they can also manually learn it, much like the other races. Wyrmlings like myself gain basic knowledge of our main affinity of magic being lighting spells and all dragons gain access to basic air magic wich helps us fly . Young dragons gain access to
Mediums amount of knowledge for our main type of magic, and juvenile dragons even more magic knowledge and memories. Once we become adolescents, we unlock basic knowledge of our lesser affinity magics based on our primary, for reds, it’s steam; for blues, it’s earth; for greens, it’s nature; for blacks, shadow; and for whites, water.
There are five primary types of magic—earth, water, air, lighting, and fire—commonly wielded by all people and spices. Then, there are the rarer types: steam, acid, poison, nature, ice, sound, shadow, light, dark, metal, illusion, space, time, and mental among others. Upon reaching adulthood, we gain more knowledge on our main type of magic reaching legendary levels, and access to shape-shifting to human elves dwarfs etc. When we become elder dragons, we unlock a little of our main type but mainly our lesser affinity. Once we become ancient dragons we gain access to even more magic of our lesser and secondary affinity. As we grow into wyrms, we master our chosen main affinities becoming that very element, and finally, as primordial dragons, we no longer gain our memories in magic.
However, this growth happens gradually. A a dragon who merely waits for time to pass without testing or practicing their magic will fall behind plus we can study and practice other magic types and it is easier to use the other races. But most dragons are too lazy to just usually let their inheritance magic do their magic work. This has some credit to it given learning magic is much harder if you don't have an affinity for it, even with dragons beaing more connected to magic than other races making learning it easier it's still hard.
My mind drifted to the other dragon types as well, especially the metallic dragons. From strongest to weakest, they are gold, silver, bronze, copper, and brass. Gold dragons are often considered the mightiest of all common dragons. They are large, powerful, and tend to live in solitude, far away from other creatures. Despite their strength, they are good-natured, often assuming humanoid forms to explore the world. Silver dragons, almost equal in strength to reds, are smarter and more strategic, often relying on their allies to defeat their foes. Their breath is icy, and they prefer to lair in cold places, much like their golden counterparts. Both gold and silver dragons are favored by Bahamut, the platinum dragon god.
Bronze dragons are curious creatures. Like us blues, they wield lightning, but they also have a mental breath weapon that can cause their targets to flee in terror. They live near coastal areas, enjoying interaction with other life forms. Copper dragons are playful and love riddles. They prefer rocky and mountainous terrain for their lairs and can use acid and a slowing breath weapon to deal with enemies. Finally, brass dragons are the most talkative, known for engaging in long conversations with anyone they meet. They avoid fighting whenever possible, using their sleeping gas and fire breath to deal with threats. They can usually be found in deserts.
Then there are the gem dragons—Amethyst, Emerald, Sapphire, Topaz, Crystal, Obsidian, Ruby, and Beljuril—each with their own strengths and quirks. First there are the Amethyst dragons the strongest of the gem dragons they are lavender in color and are wise and smart even among dragons they believe they do not get involved in the chromatic vs metal dragon conflicts like most gem dragons they believe it to be foolish there breathe has three types one were they scream like a banshee they can only do this twice a day the next were they breathe out an invisible force that crushes the opponent they also can once per day shout out an amethyst crystal once they have a dislike for white and red dragons along wibeing living silver and coppers are foolish they have their lairs near the costs of water and oceans they prefer not to fight and are extremely cautious.
Next are emerald dragons they are a type of dragon that is green in color they are extremely curious when it comes to history and often the greatest scholars of any race. but they only observe and do not act most of the time. But they are often paranoid and their lairs are usually covered in traps.in place of Dragon Breathe, they have an extremely loud screech that often dissidents their opponent. They are afraid of reds and very protective of their young they can be found in their lairs underground and near volcanos. Next are Sapphire dragons they are the most anti-social of the gem dragons and love to talk about military strategy they are often confused with blue dragons they dig their tunnels in mountains creating great labyrinths they also have a sonic dragon breathe and among the gem dragons which are all known for their mental magic, they are the best.

Next are topaz dragons are the most selfish of the gems and generally the most evil they do not care for parenting at all often leaving their young to save themselves they breathe a dehydration breathe that dehydrates all things and they breathe water they often set up their lairs near bronze dragons often fighting with them despite beaing water they do not like it and stay dry as much as possible. Next are crystal dragons the weakest were often the most friendly and talkative of the gems they had crystal-like white scales were nonaggressive and would rather talk things out plus they had an endless curiosity about the world they often fought with white dragons due to both beaing in the cold places whites often beaing the aggressive ones spew a breath of crystals and often adopted white dragon eggs to make them friendlier.
Next Obsidian are black so-called the smartest of the gems and the most dangerous may be smart but they are also cruel quick to anger and arrogent they breathe a cone of fire they prefer warm places and volcanos. Next the Ruby dragons are often mistaken for red dragons are the rule followers and good. they breathe a wave of heat instead of fire and melt all who come in contact. They often were found in clans and sometimes lived with red dragons. they like their red dragon cousins prefer warm places like volcanos. Next, the Beljuril dragons prefer seismic active places and are naturally reclusive they have two types of breath weapons one which they spew and an energy blast that absorbs all energy but can only be used in seismic active places and lava. That's all about the gems.
Weeks passed since our first hunt for terror crabs, and my sister had improved. She was less arrogant now, though she still had a streak of pride that made her stand out—more red than blue, if you asked me. As for me, my growth in magic was progressing quickly. While my siblings were still stuck at tier three spells, I had already begun to use tier five in my primary affinity—lightning—and tier two in my secondary, earth. I practiced relentlessly, focusing on honing my skills every day.
Curious about the world beyond our clan, I sought out Indrathor, one of the three adult dragons in our midst, to ask about the area. When I found him, he was lying near the edge of the beach, watching the waves crash against the shore.
“Indrathor, where exactly are we located?” I asked.
He turned his head slightly, his glowing blue eyes resting on me before answering, “We are in the human kingdom of Calendar, surrounded by several others. To the west lies the island kingdom of Isolwind, while Arsnthor borders us to the east. To the south is Drakenshire, a land of wyvern-riders, and to the north, beyond the sea, are more lands—mostly human and elven kingdoms. Calendar is the strongest of them all. The terrain of the kingdom is mostly plains and forests with fertile land there are mountains to the east, with a few marshlands to the west. Your mother and I chose this location because it was remote, a safe place to raise our clan.”
He paused, stretching his wings slightly before continuing, “There aren’t many other dragons in this region. Perhaps a green or two, but not many that would pose a threat. It was a good decision to settle here.” With that, he stood up, a mischievous glint in his eyes. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some fun to attend to with your mother.”
I rolled my eyes as he flew off. Well, at least now I had a better understanding of where we were located. A couple more weeks passed, and I continued my magical training. Then, the clan held a tournament for the older wyrmlings. Unfortunately, my siblings and I were still too young to participate, but we watched with keen interest. The winner was a female dragon named Nimbra. She was slightly larger than the average wyrmling, about half a meter longer, and was apparently the eldest of the oldest clutch of eggs still in the wyrmling stage.
Nimbra was impressive—quick, agile, and precise with her magic. I watched her closely, admiring her skill. Though I had surpassed my siblings in magical ability, watching someone like Nimbra reminded me that I still had much to learn. Her use of tier four lightning magic was smooth, almost instinctual. It was clear that she had spent years honing her abilities, far longer than I had been alive.
As the tournament ended and the crowd dispersed, I found myself contemplating my next steps. I had the potential to become one of the most powerful dragons in the clan, but power alone wouldn’t be enough. I needed strategy, wisdom, and experience. The world beyond our lair was vast, and I knew that, one day, I would have to venture out into it. Until then, I would continue my training, pushing myself to master the magic that flowed through my veins.
The future was uncertain, but one thing was clear—I would be ready for whatever challenges came my way.
