Lightly Used, Baby Shoes, Water's Dues 9

Telling Susie that she was an FBI agent didn’t particularly seem to calm her down. In fact, Susie actually seemed to be getting angry after she realized she wasn’t in danger. She was glaring at Amicia now. The outrage was palpable on her face. Was she mad at Amicia for tricking her into coming out to the parking lot?

“Oh NOW the cops are taking us seriously?!” Susie screamed. Her first was shaking. Amicia got the feeling that Susie would’ve thrown something at her if she had anything in her hands. She was stomping up to Amicia now. With an accusatory finger, She poked hard at Amicia’s chest. “I called the cops. I called them every single time when Emily disappeared. You know what those pigs told me? That if I called them again about her disappearing, they’d arrest me! Sam had to take time off of classes just to help me look for her because the stupid cops said she probably just wanted space! Now they’re both gone and I’m alone!”

Tears were running down Susie’s face now. The accusation was clear in her eyes. If what she said was true, then Emily Jacobson didn’t just disappear one day. She had gone out and was brought back by her family multiple times. Did the police know? Was it incompetence or maliciousness from the department? She’d have to have a long talk with the captain when she got back.

Amicia grabbed the hand Susie was poking her with.. She tried to struggle away but Amicia held firm. Amicia held her hand firmly, but gently. “Miss Jacobson. I’m very sorry to hear about your experience with the police here. I’m not sure why they didn’t take you seriously, but I want you to know that I will do everything I can for your family. I haven’t been here very long. Just a day really, but from what I know about your sister, I think she would’ve had a very bright future. I think your brother was a very honorable man and they both should be here with you now. “

Susie looked into Amicia’s eyes. She wanted to know if she really believed her own words or If they were just empty platitudes. She must’ve seen something because she stopped struggling against Amicia’s hand. Finally, when it seemed like Susie was ready to talk, Amicia let go of her hand.

“Please Miss Jacobson, just a moment of your time.”

Susie sniffed. “Fine, what do you want to know?”

“You said that you told the police that Emily started disappearing right? When did that start happening?”

“Yeah, I told them. I’d wake up and she wouldn’t be in her room. She always woke up later than I did. The first time it happened I thought that maybe her job changed her schedule and she forgot to tell me. Then even after I got home from classes, She wasn’t there. I got really worried that night and called Sam. We spent hours around town looking for her.”

“But you did find her, right?”

Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

“Yeah. In the park. That was where we always found her. She was so dazed and out of it. We were so worried. We kept asking her what happened. Why didn't she call us? She said she didn’t even remember going out there.”

“Did she ever sleepwalk before this incident?”

“Never. We brought her to the doctors and they didn’t find anything wrong with her. We took away her keys, starting locking the doors at night. It kept happening. She kept winding up back at the state park. The police didn’t take us seriously. You know what they told us after the 4th time we found her in the park? That she was trespassing and they’d arrest her if she did it again! From then on, Sam and I just looked for her by ourselves. We’d search that place for hours looking for her.” Susie started to choke up. The memories of weeks before the incident haunted her. Amicia drew her into a gentle hug. She accepted the gesture of comfort. It was a while before Amicia began again.

“Was your sister stressed about anything before this? Having a hard time with anything?”

“She, uhm” Susie’s voice wavered. “She was having a hard time with losing her baby. She had a miscarriage at 4 weeks. She locked herself in the room, crying the days away. I tried being there for her, but she just kept saying she wanted to be alone.”

“She was pregnant? Where was the father during all of this?”

“Yeah, she was. Blythe Danelly. He was the dad. He broke up with Emily after they lost the baby. He said it was too hard to see her. Sam would call him to look for Emily sometimes when she got lost. The last time Emily got lost, Sam called Blythe to help us look for her. They told me they were gonna check deeper in the park, but that I should drive around in case Emily had wandered back on the road. I never saw any of them again. Not until they all showed up in the news a few days later.”

“What about your parents? Did they help you look for Emily?”

Susie shook her head. “Emily had a big fight with them both. They said it was better that she wasn’t pulled down by a baby at her age. That she had bigger things coming to her than just being a mom. They helped look for her once, but Emily freaked out. She ran back into the park as soon as she saw them. We didn’t call either of them from then on”

“I see. Thank you, Susie. You’ve been a big help. This is my phone number. If you ever need to reach me, don’t hesitate to call.” Amicia gave her one last squeeze of the shoulder. She got back into her car. As she was about to pull out, there was a knock on her window. It was Susie. She seemed hesitant. Amicia rolled down the window.

“Was there anything else, Miss Jacobson?”

Susie was still thinking about whether to mention it to the agent. She didn’t want her to think she was crazy. What if she just wrote her off like the police did? No, at the very least, Agent Hoschner actually listened to her. Maybe she was treating her seriously. “When we would find Emily in the park, she was usually out of it. There were a few times though, where I could hear her talking to herself. She kept saying ‘I hear my baby, he’s crying’, over and over again. I know this is gonna make me seem insane, but I have to say it. Sometimes when I went out there to look for her, I would walk near the campgrounds next to the river. I swear Agent Hoschner, with all my heart I swear. Sometimes I heard a baby crying out there too.“
