Lightly Used, Baby Shoes, Water's Dues 7

Amicia slammed down a stack of papers on top of the captains desk. The captain looked up with a glare. She had just burst into the room with no warning. She came in dressed much neater than she had been when she was interrogating the hotel receptionist.

“I usually appreciate people knocking on my door before coming in , Agent Hoschner. How did you get to my office anyways? We have procedures for visitors.” Captain Fellows said.

“Simple. I just walked past your man sleeping at the desk, walked up the stairs, and into this room. I didn’t want to wake the poor man up, Dave I think his name was? He seemed rather tired.” Amicia explained.

The captain gritted his teeth. “Dave. I need to have a few words with him. Still, I can’t have you coming in willy nilly.”

“I wouldn’t have to if you weren’t hiding this investigation from certain members of your department.”

The captain grumbled indecipherably at her accusation. “I’m calling a press conference this afternoon, Agent Hoschner. The cat will be outta the bag soon and my community is gonna devolve into chaos.”

“It’s your job to make sure that doesn’t happen, captain. My job is to figure out what’s happening in your quaint little town. Take a look at the papers.” Amicia said. The captain looked down at the stack. He took them in hand and started flipping through them. After he finished, he looked back up.

“What is this? Are these suspects?”

“Quite the opposite captain. I believe that these are our unknown victims.”

“Where did you get this?”

“The Hampton hotel where I’m staying. I need you to look into each of these people. Start making calls to their family members. The credit card statements should get us their info.”

“Hampton huh? Having a federal budget must be nice.” the captain grumbled.

“It certainly has its perks. We also need to start digging deeper into the hotel manager there, Mortimer Stephens. The man purposely didn’t report any of these people missing and we need to know why.”

“What will you be doing while we’re all working on this and calling the press conference?”

“Speaking to the Jacobsons. I need a clearer picture of why the Jacobsons and Dannelly were there that night. Maybe I’ll be able to establish a timeline of their movements.” Amicia explained.

“I’ll have some of my men look into the credit card statements.”

“Dave?”

“Not Dave. Someone actually decent at their job.”

The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

“Ah-wonderful. One last thing before I go, I’d appreciate an office while I’m in Pocatello.”

“Done. I’ll have it ready and set up with everything we have.” Captain Fellows said with a nod of his head. Amicia had just started to head down the hall when she heard the sound of running shoes from behind her. It was Stevie Fellows, the deputy that escorted her yesterday. The girl stopped a short distance from her. She panted, trying to catch her breath. Apparently she ran here as fast as she could.

“Agent Hoschner! Wait!. I heard you were up here with the captain. Is there something going on? Please, I know dad was trying to hide the bodies we found from me. One of the guys I know at the coroner’s office called me. He said they found more than a dozen extra bodies when they started looking. What’s going on?” Stevie asked. She spoke in a rushed, panicked way.

Amicia took her by the shoulders with a firm grip. “Officer Fellows, calm down. Your captain will be calling a press conference soon. In the meanwhile, it’s best that you prepare for today. I expect some people won’t react well to the curfew.”

“Curfew?!”

“Again, I’m sure you’ll have your answers this afternoon. I have to go now.”

Amicia left the poor girl there. She seemed very frustrated by being left in the dark. She thought the captain was acting very foolishly. He should’ve trusted his daughter instead of leaving her in the dark. There was a much higher chance she’d act rashly if she thought people didn’t trust her. In turn she wouldn’t trust them and act as a lone wolf.

Amicia remembered when she had started this life. Her brother had just died and she didn’t know anybody to turn to. Not that she would’ve trusted anyone at that point in her life. She ran all over the city trying to find out where her brother went when he disappeared. She thought that she could find clues as to what killed him. Those were dark times for her. Times she wished she didn’t remember.

Amicia was in the parking lot of the police station. She had yet to rent a vehicle for herself. She was just about to call for another taxi when she heard the roar of an engine. A standard issue police vehicle stopped on the curb in front of her. In the window, Stevie Fellows peeked her head out.

“You still haven’t gotten a car yet right? I can drive you! For as long as you need.” the deputy offered. Amicia crossed her arms. She gave a very skeptical look. The deputy's little ploy was plain as day. Follow the agent along until the deputy could find out what her father was hiding.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“Oh come on. I know this town like the back of my hand. I know everyone. Everyone! You need to know where someone is, I’m your girl.” she pleaded. Amicia shook her head. With a sigh, she walked into the passenger door of the car. She hopped into the seat still questioning if it was a good idea to have the deputy follow her along. She strapped in her seatbelt, praying that things would go well. Stevie started down the street.

“Okay so where are we off to?”

“The Jacobson’s home. I need to speak to them.”

“I know where it is. They’re on Trent Avenue. Wait, did you know where it was? How were you planning on getting there without an address?”

“I have this little thing known as the FBI database deputy. ”

A database that was also not available to herself. Having the badge was enough to fool the local police, but a badge did not mean she had their resources. Her own resources consisted of a gun and the app Araña had left for her. She had tried to access the app earlier to see if there was more information available, but it didn’t even open. She wasted a full 10 minutes clicking at it. However, She was sure that if the network had something useful it would let her know.

The pair of women sat in silence as they drove to the Jacobson’s home. Both of them were hoping that the family had more answers for them. That they could find something that would solve the mysterious deaths of Emily and Sam Jacobson. Amicia had learned many things after her brother died. Araña had ensured she’d have the skills to survive as she sought out the monsters. None of that prepared her on how to interrogate parents who’d just lost their daughter and son on the same day.
