"Shit! What the fuck is happening?"
White asked while looking through the window inside their caravan.
Suddenly, an arrow narrowly misses his face, hitting the wooden wall of the wagon just inches from his face.
Surprised by the arrow, White immediately goes into cover and puts the wooden window cover down.
"They are good!"
Seeing how he almost got shot in the face. White thought that their enemy must have a lot of skill. Contrary to what he thought though, Black also has something to say.
"Nah, kid. I don't think so."
Like White, he is also looking outside the window.
Wanting to see what is really happening while also trying to gauge the real power of their enemy.
"I was close to being hit you know?"
"That's why I think they're bad."
"You freaking old man!"
No matter where the old man looks. He found it impossible to gauge the strength of their enemies.
Although they are being illuminated by the rays of the sun that goes through the gaps of the leaves and branches above them.
He still cannot see most of their enemies.
He did see some of the archers who are shooting their bows but instead of attacking continuously.
They will immediately go back into cover after shooting before another one appears to shoot another one.
It's like they are exchanging turns.
"At the very least, their archers shouldn't be that many."
"Hey Isa! What are you still doing there outside?"
Seeing how Isa is still outside the wagon, White immediately ordered her to take cover inside their wagon.
Although she has armor and shield, she would be more protected inside their wagon that is covered in wood thus enabling it to act as a mobile fort.
"I think I'm okay."
"What do you mean okay? They're raining down arrows on us!"
White can't believe what Isa just said. Why would she intentionally choose to stay outside even though it's dangerous?
But like before. Black disagreed with White again.
"No, you're wrong kid."
"Ha? What are you saying, old man? Is your old age finally getting into your eyes too?"
"Shut your damn, overprotective mouth, kid, and properly look outside."
Being shouted at by Black. White finally get back to his senses and immediately tried to look outside again.
It seems that the shock from the arrow that almost hit him really got to his head that he wasn't able to properly assess the situation which caused him to overestimate their enemy more than he needs to.
Looking at it more calmly now, he indeed thinks that the enemy might not be that strong as he initially thought.
One thing he noticed is that the arrows aren't actually that overpowering.
It is indeed continuous but not the type that can be described as being rained down by arrows.
'They are exchanging turns in firing their bow to make it look like they are many.'
"But still, don't just stand outside, Isa!"
Although he already somewhat understood what's happening. He still didn't like the idea that Isa was just standing outside waiting to get shot.
This time though. Isa did indeed ride on the wagon with them.
While both White and Black tried to look at what's happening through the windows and gaps on the wagon.
Isa on the other hand does the opposite and surveys outside.
The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.
But although their methods are quite different. They did still reach the same conclusion.
"It would seem that they are just trying to hold us down."
Both White and Black nod their head to Isa, easily agreeing on her assessment.
From how it looks to them, it would seem that their enemies are just firing indiscriminately.
"Or they could just be a group of really bad archers."
"But our horses are still big targets isn't it?"
Since the start of the ambush, they were never able to hit Isa even though she never even move from her position.
There were also no sounds of horses getting hit thus implying that no horses are hit since the start of the ambush.
The most they were able to do is the close shot of White.
"I say, both."
"You mean, they are both bad and holding us off?"
'Yeah, if they really wanted to defeat us. They can just target our horses which would cause more chaos for us.'
As they are discussing the things they have noticed. There are few conclusions that they were able to make.
First is that their enemies aren't that great in archery.
Second is that their priority isn't to kill them but to hold them off. They weren't still sure why but that is the only conclusion they could get.
Third and the last is that they aren't actually that many. Unlike when they were first surprised, now that they have looked at them properly. It would seem that their enemies are just masking their miniscule numbers by alternately shooting their arrows.
This also agrees with their earlier assessment that they if the caravan's enemy is indeed attacking them. They couldn't possibly muster much of force.
As they were discussing what they found out. Suddenly, a scream can be heard.
"White! Do something!"
It was a scream from Drey who is unsatisfied by the lack of action that White and the guards are doing.
"Just wait a minute!"
Replied White.
With the reply of White is a moment of silence from the two which White thought that Drey was already satisfied with his answer.
What he doesn't know though is that Drey is already fuming in anger about what's happening.
"So what's your plan kid?"
"Let me think for a sec."
With the question coming from Black. White finally decided to think of a way to act.
But before he could think of anything. Another thought came to his mind.
"The guards!"
...
On the front of the caravan where the guards and the ambushers are fighting.
'We're really taking longer than expected.'
"Just freaking die already!"
"Freak your mother!"
The leader of the ambushing party used his spear to stab his enemy that is locking shields with him but failed when the guard dodge.
They are still locking shields with each other and both are in a stalemate.
Although he wanted to release themselves from being locked in shields with their enemy.
He is wary that once they released the power they are putting against their enemy. The guards might use this chance to push them back and kill them.
Just earlier. The leader thought that things would at least be much easier when they were able to kill two of the guards.
Having the advantage of two men in the fight and basically surrounding them. He actually thought that they might even surrender then at the time.
Unlucky for them though. The guards never broke.
It also came back to him that the people he used as his backup are the peasant that they hired.
What's even worse is that two of them are now dead which didn't help him at all in deterring the guards and when he checks on the peasants just across the guards he is fighting.
It seems that the only reason why they aren't even breaking is just basically the same reason why he also doesn't want to break off.
They were also scared of being run down.
'Wait this could be a good opportunity!'
Suddenly, shouts can be heard from the direction of the caravan.
Hearing the sudden shout. Them and even the guards weren't able to help themselves but instinctively look towards where the noise came from.
'Shit!'
He thought to himself.
Then, people inside their wagons started to come out from their wagons.
"Your time is over. Whoever you all are!"
Said one of the guards.
From the earlier stalemate. It seems that they now have the upper hand.
"Boss, what should we do!"
Said one of the leader's subordinates.
'What a disaster this has been.'
"We're breaking off."
Because they are all so close together, both his allies and enemy heard what he said.
Although feeling lost. His subordinates didn't show it on their faces and are still continued in the lock of shields that are happening.
The guards thought that they would already start fleeing, but found it weird that they are still not trying to give any ground at all.
The peasants on the other hand, immediately broke off as they heard their leader speak, turn back, and head towards the forest.
The one peasant though, in the middle was stabbed as he is turning back.
This immediately caused him to fall on the ground face flat.
The other guards seeing this didn't let the opportunity go and immediately started slashing their swords at the poor peasant.
They weren't able to chase down the other peasants who run off though because of it.
'Heh! Idiots!'
"Push!"
As the leader spoke. Suddenly, his companions also started their biggest push.
Due to this, the guards were caught by surprise and weren't able to put much effort into denying their push so they were left with no choice but to step back.
But due to the soldiers on their back who are busy killing a single peasant. They weren't able to successfully position themselves and instead fall down with the other guards on their backs.
The leader and his companions wanting to capitalize on this opportunity already raised their spears to stab them.
But before they could even stab their enemy, sounds of multiple horse gallops can be heard from the distance closing in on them.
""Ahhh!!!""
Seeing this, the leader immediately continued stabbing the guard.
The guard who was targeted by the leader tried to raise his shield but unluckily wasn't able to predict where the spear will land and was stabbed in the stomach just right below his shield.
His other companions though wasn't able to copy him and run away as soon as they heard the shouts coming from the enemy.
...
"Oh yeah. I forgot that I sent them all to the front."
"What?!"
Hearing what Black did, White instantly understood what is really happening.
"We're moving!"
"... I think we should."
Also connecting the dots. Black wasn't able to say anything but agree to White in a lower tone.
"But what about the archers?"
Isa asked, not forgetting the reason why they are currently inside the wagon.
"I'll handle that. Drey!"
Drey hearing the shout replied immediately.
"What? You're finally going to do something now?"
'This shit!'
"Yeah. But you need to help me!"
"Just say it already!"
"I need you to tell all of them to attack the enemy!"
"Are you freaking serious?!"
