Chapter 13 : Grim Dark (Part 2)

Chapter 13 : Grim Dark (Part 2)

Satan stood in front of room 245, ready to face whoever was waiting behind the door.

"See! You located the person who performed that divination on you because of my special ability," his consciousness mumbled. "You were unnecessarily skeptical of it."

"Well, I have to admit, I was wrong; that's pretty handy," Satan answered. "It honestly makes me a little envious; if only I had it in the game... Alright, now let me handle this from here.

"Go ahead, but don't do something embarrassing again," his consciousness warned. "And tone down your theatrics; you get too dramatic sometimes. No edgy or cringe-worthy dialogue, okay?"

Satan's shoulders drooped as he rubbed his temples, trying to ease the mounting frustration. He placed a finger on the door, tracing its surface with a delicate touch before pushing it open. The door swung wide, crashing into the inner wall with a thunderous sound. He stepped inside to see who was there.

"Oh... "I didn't expect to see you here," Satan replied, his eyes widening as he noticed Tamamo-no-Mae. "You appear more fox-like now," he said, noting her fox ears and nine tails. "It makes your appearance even more pleasing to my eye."

"Are you a furry or what?" His consciousness was fraught with contempt. "Set some high standards. If you're so desperate for a woman, check out the gorgeous and sexy one next to her."

Satan's gaze focused on the woman standing close to Tamamo-no-Mae.

"And who are you, miss?" Satan inquired of the woman, then added, "Your sense of fashion is... what is that word called again? Ah yes! unique," referring to her clothing.

The woman had on a flowing black robe, elegantly fashioned in the manner of bygone eras frequently associated with nighttime nobility. The rich sheen of its black fabric was enhanced with a layer of exquisite sophistication by the ruffled, complex fabric that flowed down to the lower hem and graced the shoulders. Her lovely black veil partially covered her face, showcasing only her red cherry lips and a little mole that enhanced her beauty. She had an ample chest and a slender body.

"She does look attractive. In fact, she looks even better than Elena, even with her face hidden," Satan said to his consciousness.

"She is my friend, Malina," Tamamo-no-Mae interjected, stepping between Malina and Satan.

"I see, your friend. It seems you have very pretty friends. At another time, I would gladly ask you to introduce me to them, as I have a very soft spot for women in my heart." Satan placed his hand gently on Tamamo-no-Mae's shoulder, his fingers brushing over her skin as he brought his face close to hers. "But now is not the time for that. Let's get to the point—what are you two doing here?"

Before Tamamo-no-Mae could respond, Malina pulled her behind and said in a serious tone, "Why should we tell you?" There was no way they would reveal their plans, especially to someone like him, whom she believed to be delusional enough to think he was the devil. "And don't touch my friend with your filthy hands."

"Hehehee... I love it when women act tough. It makes me feel things when I break them," Satan said with a wide, twisted smile, his fingers sliding through his hair. "You know, I am kind of interested in you," he said, lifting her chin. "I want to see your spirit crushed, your body broken, and your will submitted to mine. Make you my plaything until you're broken enough to be thrown in the sewers for the rats to feast upon."

"You know, when you act like this, you give off very rapey vibes. Absolutely disgusting," his consciousness remarked. "You're actually making me uncomfortable."

"Shut up, will you?" Satan snarled at his consciousness. "Let me do my theatrics! Do you have any idea how hard it is to come up with such lines while maintaining a straight and calm face?"

"You're revolting," Malina said, her tone filled with disdain as she removed his hand from her chin. "Just like all other men, I always crave women as if they were your toys."

"Now, I feel insulted! There are no men like me, for I am the one and only, the man among men," Satan proclaimed with grandiose flair, spreading his arms wide. "I am the darkness that haunts the light, the shadow that devours the good, the serpent that tempted man, the originator of the first cardinal sin! I am the harbinger of doom, the one who will set the world ablaze, the soon-to-be slayer of Michael and God in the final battle of Armageddon. I am Satan!"

"Lame! Don't you have better lines, or what?" His consciousness complained. "Not to mention, you were very overdramatic. Can't you tone it down to something simple? No need to go grandiose unnecessarily."

Satan ignored his consciousness's criticism, turning his attention back to Malina.

"Satan? Don't make me laugh. You are not Satan. The real deal is sealed in hell. You're nothing but an imposter, a pretender to the throne, someone delusional enough to fantasize about being the Devil. I don't believe a single word you told Tamamo-no-Mae." She turned to give Tamamo-no-Mae a look before turning back to Satan and continuing, "She may be naive enough to fall under your lies, but not me. I am Malina Urfric Gonzales, the queen of harpies."

"Gonzales? Isn't that the same surname that Albedo has?" Satan accidentally said it aloud instead of in his mind.

"You fool, you shouldn't have let that slip out!" his consciousness screamed at him. "Do you have any control over your mouth?"

"Albedo? That's the name of my brother. How do you know him?" Malina asked, her thoughts racing. Was this so-called devil related to being responsible for her brother's death?

"I will answer that question, but first, answer one of mine," Satan said.

"What is it?" Malina asked.

"Out of you two, who was the one that used divination on me at midnight?" Satan asked. "I don't like when someone spies on me without my consent."

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

Both Malina and Tamamo-no-Mae wondered what Satan meant before the wheels in their minds began to turn, and they realized what he meant.

"So, were you the one who killed those security guards on the underground floor at midnight?" Tamamo-no-Mae asked.

"Yes, I did. What about it?" Satan said. "Tell me who did the divination; please don't make this hard for your health."

"I did that. Now, you tell me, How do you know my brother's name?" Malina demanded. "I answered your question; now you answer mine."

"Okay, here it is. The reason I know your brother is because I was the one who killed him," Satan said.

"Wh-what did you say?" Malina asked, her voice trembling.

"I said I was the one who killed him."

Then, the space around them began to distort, breaking like puzzle pieces falling one by one. Darkness took over, stretching nearly infinitely, with swirling lights and geometric shapes shifting with every step they took.

"It looks like we're back in this so-called subspace," his consciousness said. "Though the method this time was different from the one Albedo used."

"You're right," Satan replied. He then focused his mind and eyes, and the two figures stood in front of him.

The first was a majestic white fox, six feet tall, with fur as pure as freshly fallen snow and faintly tinted with blue. Her piercing blue eyes shone with inner light, and her nine tails waved gracefully behind her, each tip glinting with a hint of silver. Her keen claws flashed, ready to cut through anything.

Satan recognized it was Tamamo-no-Mae in her true form, but it wasn't as surprising to him as Malina's.

Towering at twelve feet, a figure with long, avian-like legs covered in black feathers shimmered with a captivating purple light. Strips of midnight linen exposed part of her huge chest, revealing an ebony feather cascade that flowed down her tail at her exposed waist. Her hands were human-like, with a delicate and sophisticated touch of feathers. Her eyes gleamed with ferocious brilliance, and her beautiful human face, now totally exposed, emanated an otherworldly charm.

"Hey, isn't this what I think it is?" his consciousness remarked.

"I was going to say the same thing," Satan replied.

This was astonishing, looking at Malina's harpy form. It reminded him of the harpies in [Dark Descent]. In that game, harpies were one of the many playable races, though they were not particularly popular among players due to their large size, which limited their access to equipment and potions and barred them from certain in-game locations. Despite these limitations, they boasted extremely high health points and defenses, as well as naturally high-speed mana regeneration.

Was it mere coincidence that her appearance resembled that of the game, or was she actually a player? He wanted to ask to confirm his thoughts, but now was not the time.

"I know how you're feeling right now, but I don't think it would be a good idea to fight him. We don't stand a chance," Tamamo-no-Mae telepathically said to her friend. "It's suicide!"

"Don't be like that. If we fight together, we can certainly win against this guy or any other," Malina said, materializing her spear. "Besides, there is no way I am letting the killer of my brother go away just like that."

"If I am not wrong, that's the spear of Mystra," Satan said, recognizing the weapon. It was one of the most powerful, legendary-ranked weapons in the game. Seeing it in Malina's hands increased the likelihood that she was a player, but if not, then how?

"You know about my spear?" Malina asked.

"I am Satan, of course, I am aware of a weapon of such legendary caliber. It's one of the few things that might actually hurt me," Satan replied. "But such a weapon is wasted in the hands of a woman."

Enraged, Malina charged at Satan, attempting to stab him, but he caught the spear by its tip with his hand.

"What the hell?!" Malina exclaimed, struggling to free the spear from Satan's grasp, but it was futile.

"You are strong, but I am stronger," Satan said, tightening his grip on the spear.

As a mage, Satan's physical strength was limited. Normally, he wouldn't consider hand-to-hand combat with an armed opponent, as they could easily cut him in half with one strike.

But this was different.

Neither Malina nor Tamamo-no-Mae had that edge. He could see their levels above their heads—Tamamo-no-Mae at 71 and Malina at 75.

His physical strength matched that of a level 100 warrior, more than enough for this struggle against Malina, assuming she was some kind of melee class, like a lancer, and theoretically under the same framework as him.

As for Tamamo-no-Mae, he had no clue.

Then he suddenly loosened his grip, and his eyes gave a faint gleam. Malina was hit by an invisible force, sending her flying backward. She tumbled through the air, colliding with one of the floating geometric shapes. The impact echoed in the dark subspace as she slid down the shape's surface, landing heavily on the ground. Her spear clattered beside her, its metallic ring fading into the eerie silence.

"That's it? I expected more," Satan said, smirking condescendingly at Malina. "Then again, you are a woman. I shouldn't have raised my hopes too high."

"You know, that sounds extremely sexist. Not that I care much, but I'm impressed you didn't kill her, considering your track record."

"I'm no fool. We need her alive to ask some questions," Satan replied to his consciousness. As he turned his head, he was suddenly engulfed in a blinding white beam from Tamamo-no-Mae.

Unfortunately, it was not enough to even scratch Satan due to his extremely high magic defense.

Satan's eyes gave off a black glow, and a spiral beam of dark light shot out, twisting and coiling as it moved through the white beam. This was one of his high-tier chant-less spells, "Spiral Dark Nemesis," a dark element spell belonging to the tenth tier.

The spiral beam clashed with the white beam, creating a struggle between the two forces. Dark and light energies crackled and hissed as they collided, pushing against each other.

'Damn it!' Tamamo-no-Mae cursed mentally as she saw her beam being overpowered. With a swift movement, she leaped to the side, narrowly avoiding the advancing spiral beam.

The spiral beam surged forward, hitting a distant target. Upon impact, it erupted with a deafening explosion, sending fragments of dark energy in all directions. The ground trembled, and a shockwave rippled through the subspace, warping the air and distorting the floating geometric shapes. The force of the explosion left a glowing, violet crater, illuminating the dark surroundings with an eerie light.

"You noob! How could you let your guard down like that? If it weren't for the level difference, Tamamo-no-Mae's attack would have vaporized us both!" his consciousness ranted with frustration. "How can someone like you be among the top ten players worldwide? Are they all as incompetent as you?"

"I admit that was a blunder, but there's no need to get so worked up. You are frustrating. If only I had a way to get to you, I would have gladly strangled you to death," Satan shot back, his irritation evident.

"The feeling is mutual," his consciousness retorted, mirroring the sentiment. "Well, at least there are a few things we can agree with."

Malina stood up and brandished her spear.vWith a crackling red lightning along its tip, she threw the lightning towards Satan.

Satan just waved a hand to block the bolt of energy that arced across the air. The lightning swerved off course, striking a random place in the distance with a flashing red glow.

"Is that all you can do with this spear? You know it can do more than this pitiful parlor trick," Satan sneered, raising his index finger. Flames gathered at the tip, and he prepared to unleash a powerful attack. "Here comes sixth-tier magic: Greater Fire Ball."

With a loud roar, Satan's fingertip burst out a gigantic sphere of fire the size of five basketballs. With immense heat crackling on its surface, the fireball flared fiercely. It rushed in Malina's direction, blazing a path and filling the room with its burning brightness.

Malina quickly took to the air, her wings beating rapidly as she evaded the fiery projectile. Her feathers began to glow with a soft purple light as she soared out of the path of the inferno.

"Why do you women resist? Why can't you all simply give me what I want?" Satan complained with a mix of frustration and impatience. "When you all know resistance is futile, come and surrender yourself to me; I will show you mercy and my love."

"Can you please stop with your rapist lines?!" His consciousness interjected, clearly annoyed. "You are acting like a predator, not like the Devil!"

Meanwhile, Tamamo-no-Mae had finished charging her own attack and unleashed a large blue sphere from her mouth. The sphere shot through the air, radiating a bright, cold light.

"It would be better if you two brought out your real power. I want to end this as quickly as possible," Satan remarked, raising his hand to halt the incoming attack. With a simple gesture, he crushed the blue sphere with telekinesis, its light extinguishing abruptly. "There is no use of dragging this fight for too long."

"I couldn't agree more; here is an attack that targets the very essence of your karma," Malina declared with determination. She beat her wings forcefully, and a towering pillar of black light surged down from the sky, aimed directly at Satan. "The more negative your karma, the more suffering you'll experience as you're blasted into nothingness!"

At the same moment, Tamamo-no-Mae chanted, "Shūen no Mahō Saakuru!" A radiant circle appeared around Satan, forming an impenetrable barrier that confined him within. "This will restrain you temporarily, allowing Malina's attack to have its effect." Her voice grew urgent as she continued, "Malina, we need to leave immediately! We can't win this fight. I doubt your attack will have any impact on such a formidable opponent."

"Don't be foolish. I've faced demons before and killed many with this attack," Malina insisted. "No demon can survive having their body, soul, and mind obliterated."

"So, it seems the demons here are different from those in Dark Descent," Satan mused, acknowledging the information shared by Tamamo-no-Mae and Malina. "This world's demons lack immunity to karma-based attacks."

"How delightful," his consciousness replied. "It shows how inferior these demons are compared to our kind. It's time you take this seriously and show them their place."

Satan then slammed his foot onto the ground, and darkness swiftly enveloped the area.
