THE INTERVIEW (I)

THE INTERVIEW (I)

“I wish you a warm welcome! Welcome to PROJECT: M.O.”, a strange female voice, coming from the video, said. At this point, it was unclear who’s voice it was, and, in the video, the origin of the woman’s voice, who sounded like she was in her late twenties, could not be seen. Urien assumed she was off camera. The video, at this point, was showing a glass of water standing on a what-seemed like a wooden table.

“Before we continue any further, I want to confirm. This is Urien I am talking to, right?”

The camera suddenly switched its angle from a glass of water to nobody else but Urien, oddly happily sitting in an office chair, in what seemed to be a well-kept and even decorated room.

“Yes.”, the Urien in the video replied quickly. It seemed as if he was rushing to get through the interview as fast as possible.

Suddenly Urien took this video of himself a hundred times more seriously. He tried to focus on every detail of the video he could.

The lady, which will be referred to as “The Interviewer” from this point onwards, let out a little chuckle in the video.

“Alright, alright. Then let’s begin this interview, shall we… Urien?”

The Urien in the video nodded the same way as he had nodded to John a couple of minutes ago. This inspired John to comment on the subject: “There’s that infamous nod.”

“You are here, and I am sure a hundred percent, because you saw our ad somewhere. After all, in this business, we need new people circulating all around nonstop, so why don’t you tell me about the ad you saw?”

Video Urien looked as if this question irritated him, which could be seen with the sudden change of expression in his face. He stuttered for a moment, and then replied: “Honestly… I don’t remember the exact ad I saw. But it sure did catch my attention, making me come all the way down to this facility.”

The Interviewer took notice of his reply. “Okay… I am glad we took your attention so easily, then.”

“Do you mind telling us something about yourself, not in the sense of personal details and who you are (because those details will be needed at the end of the interview, not now), but mostly I am alluding to you telling us about what attracted you most to this PROJECT. Was it the money that was promised?”

Video Urien, almost as if he had prepared the answer to this very question, replied: “Well, to be honest, the promised money was a nice bonus, sure, but what is even more attractive to me about this “job” (if you could even call it that), was the note on the ad that said that most of the TESTs I am to be doing were to be “mental” ones and not “physical” ones. Because, and believe me, I’m not the most athletic person out there…”

“So, you like challenging yourself? Mentally, your- “self”?” – The Interviewer asked.

The author's content has been appropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

“Yes.” – a quick answer followed soon by Urien in the video.

” I hope you don’t mind me asking, Urien. While we are on the topic of your mental self, how are you, how should I put this, “mentally”? Have you ever had any procedures done to your brain before? If you have, please do tell me. Don’t take this question lightly as having work done on your brain before could affect your stay here if you do get accepted into the PROJECT. “

“No, ma’am. Nothing of the sorts.”

“Then that settles it. I’ll explain the main concept of our work here to you so you can settle on a definitive answer to whether you want to take part of our PROJECT.”

“Have you heard of the concept of “erasing memories”, Urien?”

“Can’t say that I haven’t. You see it all the time in sci-fi fiction...” – Urien replied.

“Would you have a problem with us erasing your memories?”

“Depends. Do you mind telling me a little bit more?”

“Of course not. Here at PROJECT: M.O. we are looking for potential candidates who will take on the challenge of challenging themselves. Upon starting your stay here, your memories of ever signing up for this “job” get erased. How, may you ask? Using our newly required patent for the “LOOP-DOOR” system all it takes is a willing human to go through it and, like magic, the human in question forgets almost everything about themselves. Even their name. So, then you are placed inside of a room, and when you first wake up, someone is sure to remind you of your name through light conversation. After that, you are to undergo a series of TESTs. These TESTs, like the name suggests, “TEST” your mental strength and capability. After you complete every TEST, you go through the same “LOOP-DOOR” again, and, if you haven’t grasped the concept already, you go through all the same TESTs again. Thanks to the “LOOP-DOOR” system, you forget you’ve ever did them and you start anew, all while we collect results, in hope of getting differing results each time. We then collect these results and sell them to the companies who need such information. After you finish a hundred LOOPs, you do one final TEST. It is after this final TEST that you are free to collect your hard-earned cash and go home. If you want to help us with this project further, though, after finishing the final TEST you also have the chance to join our staff team. Do not worry, after completing all your work here, we make sure to bring your memories back using the MERGE-LOOP-DOOR system. It makes sure to bring your old memories back into your current self. The choice is on you! Do you have any questions?”

“It sounds simple enough but it’s the LOOP SYSTEM part I can’t figure out. How do those doors work?”

The Interviewer smiled. “You go through a painless operation where we install a simple chip inside your brain. This chip then overtakes almost all your memories, but leaves the parts of the brain vital to you so you don’t forget the basic things: how to walk, how to talk, how to write, etc. New memories, that you make while you are here, get put onto the chip instead inside of your brain. When you finish a LOOP, going through a LOOP DOOR simply wipes the information and memories off the chip and lets you start over fresh again. Finishing every TEST allows you to go through the MERGE-LOOP-DOOR. It basically, as the name suggests, merges your LOOP memories (which are on the chip) with your old ones so you’re not at a loss. All your LOOP memories are stored deeper in the chip, and only then are they wiped off the surface. Technically, they are still in the chip, its just that they are copied off to a place in the chip where you can't remember them. Once you go through the MERGE-LOOP-DOOR, those LOOP memories stored deep within your chip merge with your actual life memories.”

“So let me get this straight. For a hundred LOOPs, I have no idea what I am doing. And, once I complete one final TEST, I get to merge my memories back into my actual brain. After that I can choose to stay as a worker or just go home?”

“That’s correct.”
