CHAPTER 23: Blood And Dust

CHAPTER 23: Blood And Dust

As I lay on the floor, I looked up at Roderick. He seemed to have a halo of blue and yellow colourful light pulsating around the edges of him. I blinked my eyes a few times and looked up at him again. The colourful pulsating aura glowed more brightly and for a brief second I thought that I’d died and that he was an angel.

“Ariah?” Roderick said softly, gently patting my face with his hand as he did so. “Ariah? Are you okay?”

I decided that angels wouldn’t hit my face so I closed my eyes and took a long blink before opening them again.

His touch brought me back to focus on the room around me and the light that I’d seen around him slowly faded away like it had never been there at all. There were lots of strange things going on so it didn’t occur to me that what I’d just seen around Roderick would have been any stranger than what we’d already been experiencing so I instantly forgot about it.

Grabbing my hand he helped me to gradually sit upright. My head spun a little but faded after a few moments leaving a throbbing sensation instead.

“We’re lucky that we’re in here.” I whispered, my voice feeling foreign to me.

“We’re really lucky.” Reese said from beside me. She sat next to me and put her arm around my shoulders giving me a side hug. I could smell the perfume mixed with the mustiness of the room and my senses heightened again with the feeling that I could smell and see everything all at once

“All that dust. All those lives.” I stuttered. “It must be a weapon that’s caused this, what else could do that kind of damage?”

Georgie sniffled again from her corner and continued to rock back and forth. She had gone into full shutdown mode and I worried that she would get even worse when she saw what had happened outside.

“I think you’re right. It has to be a weapon.” Roderick said, his face sullen. “And if it is a weapon, who does it belong to? Who’s attacking us?”

“Camden Falls seems like an unusual place to start don’t you think?” Reese added. “So are they also attacking the rest of the country? Is anywhere safe?”

We all sat in silence apart from Georgie who had started sobbing again.

“Whoever it is doesn’t seem to be taking any prisoners. What kind of people would want to disintegrate other people?” I stated angrily. “It doesn’t make any sense to me.”

“It doesn’t make any sense to us because we wouldn’t do anything like that to anyone.” Reese said, running her fingers through her hair as she spoke.

“Maybe it is aliens.” Georgie spoke up from the corner. “Maybe it is aliens and they want to destroy us all!”

“It could be, because I don’t think anyone on Earth would have these weapon’s capabilities.” Roderick responded.

“I think we’d be surprised. If Dad was working on some pretty heavy technological advancements, he wouldn’t be the only one in the world doing so I imagine.” I replied as my heart panged once more as I mentioned Dad‘s name.

“Well, whoever is causing this needs to deflect their anger elsewhere.” Reese sighed.

I nodded in agreement and wished with all my heart that the attack was over. I should have realised that it had only just begun.
