It was a quaint evening for Polaris as she and her companions stepped off the train onto the platform, basking in the crisp autumn air that filled the modest shipping town.
The town was nestled on the edge of Lenapehoking Territory, a far cry from the bustling metropolis they had just left. With a population well under 500, it was a place where everyone knew everyone and the pace of life was decidedly more relaxed.
The architecture of the town was a charming blend of old and new. Rustic, weathered buildings stood alongside more modern structures constructed by the settled diaspora from Earth, creating a harmonious balance in the landscape.
The streets were lined with small shops and cafes, their warm lights spilling onto the cobblestone paths. The air carried the scent of freshly baked goods and the earthy aroma of fallen leaves, a testament to the town’s close-knit community and its connection to nature. Polaris glanced over her shoulder, eyes scanning the Shoreline City skyline looming across the Shoreline Channel.
They were about forty minutes away from the city by train, the landscape gradually transitioning from urban sprawl to clustered blocks of aquaponic vertical farmland fueled by the South River’s tributaries. The fields unfurled like a patchwork quilt beneath the darkening sky, the amber hues of sunset casting a warm glow over the gently swaying crops. It was a scene of serene beauty, a drastic contrast to the chaos and destruction that often accompanied their battles with Chaos Beasts.
“I gotta say, this place sure has a cozy darned feel to it,” Floral Dawn Fresia commented in her husky drawl. “Reminds me of some of the towns my folks used to take me through back at home.”
“Home, you say?” Polaris repeated quietly.
She had never heard a cadence quite like Fresia’s, and Polaris couldn’t quite place it, but it was different from anything she had encountered before. Polaris couldn’t help but indulge her curiosity.
“Pardon me if this question proves to be intrusive, but from whence did you come?” Polaris asked inquisitively.
Fresia chuckled, a hint of nostalgia in her voice. “Ah, well, I’m from a little place called Texas. It’s got its fair share of small towns where I grew up, just like this one.”
Polaris’s eyes widened in surprise. “Texas? You originate from Earth, then?” she asked, a hint of disbelief in her voice.
“Sure do, sugar,” Fresia replied with a grin. “Terran tho’, born and raised. My folks were deployed out there during the war and figured they’d stay for a bit and help rebuild. Lots of open spaces, big skies, and a whole lot of heart. I miss it sometimes, but the homeland here has been good to me.”
“A-choo,” a timid, soft voice sneezed behind them.
Heart Majesty Pink’s eyes sparkled with curiosity as she squinted at the sign welcoming them to the town. She had tied her hair up into pink pigtails, and her matching frilly pink dress rustled in the wind as she leaned over.
Her golden tiara had a pink heart square in the center, and she was fidgeting with a baby blue locket adorned with a bunny logo.
“Mapleview, established in 1853,” she read aloud, her voice soft but clear. “I-it’s so quaint and charming here, isn’t it? I bet they have amazing sweets in those bakeries run by settlers from earth.”
Majesty Pink’s eyes darted excitedly from one shop to another, taking in the sights with childlike wonder.
“Got to the right place,” Fresia said, glancing at the sign. “Locals called in a few Ayakashi spottings here and the towns along the river. Heard it’s been causin’ quite the stir with the good folks.”
Polaris nodded, her expression turning serious. “They can be quite the nuisance. We will need to investigate thoroughly to ensure the town’s safety.”
“Yes, yes indeed, princess,” Fresia giggled. “Ya know, there’s a certain charm to these small towns up north, ain’t there?”
Fresia sighed, her gaze wandering over the town. “...Kinda makes you appreciate the simpler things in life,”
Polaris nodded, feeling a sense of warmth spreading through her as she took in the sights and sounds of the town.
She couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia wash over her. The smell of the air and the taste of the atmosphere reminded her of the lands her family overlooked, though she would never admit such a thing out loud. The thought of her background and the past that came with it were things she preferred to keep tucked away in this company.
For now, she was simply… Magical Girl Polaris.
Majesty Pink shivered slightly, hugging herself. “I-I hope it’s not too dangerous. I haven’t actually dealt with Ayakashi before.”
Fresia chuckled, patting her on the back. “Don’t you worry none, Maggie. We’ve got each other’s backs — ain’t no knave-class beasts gonna stand a chance against three girls like us. ‘Sides, Ocean’s Whisper and her team are close handling the other packs.”
Maggie simply bit her lips before adjusting her matching pink backpack. She took it off, opened it, and whispered inside, “Hey… we’re here now. You can come out.”
She pulled out a small, fluffy creature resembling a ferret with floppy bunny ears and whiskers. It had soft pink fur with baby blue markings down its back and large, expressive pink eyes shaped in concentric circles that seemed to sparkle with curiosity.
The creature yawned adorably, twitching its whiskers and stretching its tiny limbs before zooming up her arm and settling comfortably on Maggie’s shoulder.
“Is that your familiar, Maggie?” Polaris asked, intrigued.
Majesty Pink nodded, a small smile appearing on her face. “Yes, this is Whiskers. He’s a bit shy and gets anxious around crowds… just like me. But he’s been a great friend.”
Whiskers let out a soft, melodic chirp, and Polaris couldn’t help but smile at the adorable creature. “Your companion is… quite regal,” she complimented.
Fresia grinned at Polaris, “Regal’s one way o’ putin’ it, Polaris. Maggie here’s got a knack for picking out the cutest little critters. Whiskers here’s got some tricks up his... well, I reckon he ain’t got sleeves, but you get the idea.”
Polaris chuckled, appreciating Fresia’s lightheartedness. “I’m sure she does. It’s always good to have a reliable companion by your side, especially in our line of work.”
Fresia frowned at Polaris, catching her attention. “Is something on your mind, Fresia?” Polaris inquired, sensing a hint of concern.
The redhead paused, her eyes scanning Polaris for a moment. “Well, it’s just... You’ve got this real peculiar way of talkin’ and holdin’ yourself, Polaris. Can’t put my finger on it, but I’ve noticed you slipping into that time to time. It’s like you’re always on your best behavior, even when you’re just chattin’ with us. You’re mighty endearing, darlin’ but you know you can let loose a bit ’round us, right? We’re all friends here.”
Polaris blinked, taken aback by Fresia’s observation. “I... I suppose it’s a bit of a habit. I’ve been raised a certain way. But I’ll try to relax a bit more around you both.”
Fresia chuckled, giving Polaris a friendly nudge. “That’s the spirit, love. We’re all in this together, after all. No need for any formalities ’round us.”
Majesty Pink nodded, her eyes softening. “Y-yeah, Polaris. We’re a provisional team now. You can be yourself around us.”
With a reassuring shared smile, the trio continued their stroll through the town, taking in the sights and sounds. Polaris relaxed a bit, the familiar weight of responsibility momentarily lifted by the simple beauty of Mapleview’s early evening air.
As they walked, they passed by a local bakery, the aroma of freshly baked bread and pastries wafting out onto the street. Fresia’s eyes lit up, and she nudged Polaris. “Ya know, I reckon we could use a little snack before we get down to business. Whatcha say, girls?”
Polaris smiled, nodding in agreement. “That sounds like a wonderful idea, Fresia. A little sugar will certainly give us a much-needed boost.”
Majesty Pink’s eyes sparkled with excitement. “O-oh, I’d love that! Maybe they have some macarons!”
The bakery was cozy and inviting, with the scent of cinnamon and vanilla filling the air. The display case was filled with various delectable treats, from flaky croissants to rich chocolate cupcakes.
The baker, a stout woman with flour dusting her apron, looked up from her work. Her brown hair and black eyes marked her as an Earth transplant, and her eyes widened in surprise at the sight of the three Magical Girls. “Well… I’ll be!” she exclaimed, a smile spreading across her face.
“Never thought I’d see the day when three Magical Girls would grace my little bakery. What can I get for you lovely ladies?”
Fresia stepped forward, her eyes scanning the display case. “Howdy there! We’re just passin’ through and thought we’d grab a little somethin’ tasty. What d’ya recommend?”
The baker chuckled, wiping her hands on her apron. “You’ve got good timing. I just finished a batch of apple cinnamon scones that are to die for. And if you’re in the mood for something a bit more indulgent, our chocolate ganache tarts are a hit.”
Majesty Pink clapped her hands together in delight. “O-oh, those scones sound amazing! And m-maybe a tart too... or two,” she added sheepishly.
Whiskers chittered playfully, perking up at the mention of treats, his eyes gleaming with anticipation.
Polaris smiled at the baker’s warm hospitality. “We’ll take a few of each, please. It all sounds delightful.”
The baker laughed, clearly charmed by Whiskers. “Well, I can’t say no to such an adorable little audience. I’ll throw in an extra tart for your furry friend here.”
As the baker packaged their treats, Fresia leaned closer to Polaris, a mischievous twinkle in her eye. “You know, Polaris, I noticed back at the assembly that you’ve got a real sweet tooth. Bet you’re gonna enjoy these more than any of us.”
Polaris blushed slightly, nodding in agreement. “I must confess, I do have a penchant for sweets. It’s one of my few indulgences.”
The baker handed them their package, her eyes crinkling with a smile. “Here you go, dears. Enjoy! And if you’re in town for a while, feel free to stop by again. We’ve got fresh pastries every morning.”
The trio thanked the baker and exited the bakery, the warm aroma of baked goods lingering in the air. They found a nearby bench and sat down, eager to sample their treats.
Majesty Pink took a bite of her scone, her eyes closing in bliss. “Mmm, this is heavenly. The apples are so tender and the cinnamon is just perfect.”
Polaris scanned her eyes across the neon-yellow street lights, nibbling at her tart. “Indeed, this is exquisite. The balance of flavors is remarkable.”
Fresia grinned, taking a generous bite of her chocolate tart. “Ain’t nothin’ like a good bit of chocolate to make your day. This here’s mighty fine, I tell ya.”
Polaris smiled, feeling a sense of camaraderie with Fresia and Majesty Pink. The simple pleasure of sharing sweets on a quiet evening brought a warmth to her heart that she hadn’t felt in a long time. For a moment, she could forget about the weight of her responsibilities and just enjoy the presence of her new companions.
Whiskers chirped and nibbled on a small tart on the bench, his tiny paws holding it delicately. His eyes closed in contentment, eliciting a soft laugh from Majesty Pink.
“This is nice,” Polaris remarked, a genuine smile spreading across her face.
Fresia nodded, her eyes twinkling. “Life’s too short to skip out on the good stuff, ya know? Sometimes, ya just gotta take a moment to enjoy the mighty fine things in life.”
The trio sat in companionable silence, savoring their pastries as the sky transitioned from a deep blue to a soft shade of purple. The twinkling stars slowly began to appear overhead, casting a gentle glow on the town of Mapleview.
Polaris pulled out her Nexus, checking on the group chat with the other Magical Girls. Hana had posted an update: “No signs of Ayakashi activity in the western sector. Continuing patrol towards Sector 3A.”
Polaris typed a quick response: “Enjoying a brief respite in Mapleview. Will commence investigation shortly.”
She shook her head at the A-Rank Magical Girl’s sharp, business-like communication style. Polaris had noticed her peculiarities during their brief interaction at the Assembly, but it was endearing in its own way. Hana’s social awkwardness contrasted with the formidable reputation she’d developed, adding a layer of intrigue to her character.
In Polaris’s opinion, this mission should have been far below the notice of an A-Rank Magical Girl. Still, Hana had insisted on helping the girls involved with the extermination scout the land.
Fresia glanced down at her own Nexus. “Hana’s out there already, huh? Ocean’s Whisper’s group is on the move too. Searching for other spottings upstream.”
Polaris nodded, locking her device and pocketing it. “Indeed, she seems to be quite diligent. It’s reassuring to have someone of her caliber on our side.”
Majesty Pink looked up from her scone, a hint of suspicion in her eyes. “Hana of the Dawn... I still don’t know about her…”
Polaris raised an eyebrow at Majesty Pink’s comment. “Is there something you’re concerned about regarding Hana, Maggie?”
Majesty Pink fidgeted with the wrapper of her scone. “Well, it’s just that... she’s kind of scary, you know?”
Whiskers’ ears perked up, sensing Majesty Pink’s unease. He nuzzled her cheek gently, offering silent support.
Fresia leaned forward, her expression softening. “Now, now, Maggie. She’s rough around the edges and we’ve all got our pasts, and Hana’s no different. What matters is who she is now and how she’s helpin’ us out. She volunteered to be here, right?”
Majesty Pink nodded slowly, her eyes reflecting a mix of emotions. “I guess you’re right, Fresia…”
Polaris stood up, brushing off the crumbs from her skirt. “Shall we proceed with our investigation? We should make the most of the remaining daylight.”
Majesty Pink carefully nudged Whiskers back onto her shoulder. “Ready when you are.”
As the trio set off towards the edge of town, Polaris couldn’t help but feel a sense of anticipation. This was the first formal mission she had accepted from the Hammurabi Nexus, and she was determined to prove her worth.
The three of them walked down Main Street, catching the eyes of a group of older women gathered outside a small cafe. The group was a mix of people from Earth and Terra, their animated conversation pausing as they noticed the Magical Girls. Their eyes were filled with curiosity, awe, and a hint of trepidation, causing Polaris to flinch.
The women whispered among themselves, their gazes flitting from Polaris’s shimmering cloak to Fresia’s floral aura and finally to Majesty Pink, who tried to make herself as small as possible under their scrutiny. Whiskers peeked out from her backpack, his eyes wide with curiosity at the new faces.
“Seems we’ve drawn a bit of attention,” Fresia remarked, her voice tinged with amusement. “Folks here probably don’t see too many of us Magical Girls out and about.”
Polaris nodded, her posture straightening. “Indeed. It’s… so peaceful out here. Not anything like Massachusetts Territory.”
“You’re from Massachusetts Territory?” Maggie asked, tilting her head. “I heard it’s been crazy over there for the last couple of years. A dozen low level Chaos Events a year with only three Magical Girls to cover the entire province.”
Polaris stiffened, her expression momentarily clouding. “Yes, it has been... challenging,” she admitted, carefully choosing her words. “But we do what we must to protect those in our care.”
Fresia glanced at Polaris, noting the slight shift in her demeanor. “Sounds like you’ve had your hands full back there, Polaris. Makes this little town seem like a vacation spot, huh? Why, this Ayakashi mess is from the only Chaos Event they’ve had in ’bout five years.”
Polaris forced a smile, not wanting to dwell on the darker aspects of her past. “Indeed, Fresia. Coming down to Shoreline has been… a welcome change of pace.”
As they approached the edge of town, the landscape shifted from cozy buildings to open hilly fields and dense forests. The air grew cooler, and the sounds of nature became more pronounced.
Polaris’s senses were on high alert, scanning the surroundings for signs of Ayakashi presence.
Majesty Pink wrangled her fingers, her eyes darting around nervously. “Do you think we’ll encounter any Ayakashi soon?”
Fresia placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “We’ll handle whatever comes our way, Maggie. Stay close to ol’ Fresia.”
The floral Magical Girl smiled before gently plucking one of the blooming flowers in her long, flowing red hair. She approached a dark blotch of damp Earth and planted it on the ground.
“Floriferous Bloom: Sensory Spire!” Fresia whispered, her voice carrying a melodic cadence.
The flower glowed with a soft, ethereal light, its petals unfurling gracefully. Slowly, it grew, sprouting taller and wider, until it transformed into a radiant, towering tree covered with flowers that shimmered with a spectrum of colors and stretched out as far as her eyes could see.
The spire emitted a gentle pulsing light, sending ripples of energy through the ground and air. Fresia closed her eyes, her hands raised tenderly as she touched the spire.’
Polaris watched in awe, the beauty of Fresia’s technique leaving her momentarily speechless. The spire’s energy reached out, intertwining with the foliage for miles into the forest.
Fresia’s face showed visible strain, beads of sweat forming on her forehead as she maintained the connection. “This here Art lets me read the energy of anything interactin’ with the plant life for miles on out,” she explained, her breath slightly labored.
Majesty Pink watched in fascination, her previous nervousness momentarily forgotten. “Wow, Fresia, that’s amazing! I’ve never seen anything like it!”
Fresia smiled a hint of pride in her eyes. “Well, thank ya kindly, Maggie. It’s a freshly minted technique I’ve been workin’ on. Was enough to let them take my app for a B-Rank stripe, but I’ve still got some kinks to iron out to get the nod. It’s gettin’ there, though.”
The Sensory Spire pulsed rhythmically, its light casting a soft glow on the surrounding area. The air was filled with a sense of calm as if the spire was a beacon of protection against the unknown.
Polaris took a deep breath, feeling a sense of reassurance from Fresia’s creation. “Let us proceed slowly and with caution, then. With your spire as our guide, we’ll be better prepared for any encounters.”
Fresia cracked her neck with a smile, “Darlins, it takes half my Lumina to even get this up. Can’t hold it for too long, or I’ll be as useful as a one-legged man in a butt-kickin’ contest. ‘Sides, I’ve already got a bite.”
The Magical Girl closed her eyes, focusing on the sensations transmitted through the spire. After a moment, her eyes snapped open, a look of determination on her face. “Got somethin’. There’s a disturbance to the northwest, just past the creek. Feels like a small pack, nothin’ we can’t handle.”
Polaris nodded, her expression turning serious. “Lead the way, Fresia. Maggie, stay close and be ready.”
Fresia stretched out her arms, her body glowing with a faint green aura as she channeled her energy. “Alright, ladies. Let’s show these critters what we’re made of.”
Polaris reached inside, feeling the core of her own power stir. A silver glow enveloped her, the light reflecting off her cloak like moonbeams on water. It was always an exhilarating feeling to tap into her Aura. To feel the raw essence of magic flow through her veins, connecting her to the very fabric of the world.
The pink Magical Girl’s aura flared pink, a soft yet determined light, and Whiskers, sensing the shift in mood, huddled closer to her and slinked into the bag. He secured himself, pulling down the clasp as his own tiny aura pulsed in sync with hers.
A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
And then, they were off.
All three Magical Girls shot forth into the night, their auras blazing trails of color through the darkening forest. Polaris felt a rush of adrenaline as she ran, the thrill of the chase awakening a primal instinct. The three girls jumped from tree to tree, their movements almost choreographed in synchrony. The forest blurred around them, the wind whipping through their hair as they closed in on the disturbance ahead.
The forest came alive with their footsteps, leaves rustling, and branches snapping under their swift passage. Fresia led the way, her aura leaving a trail of vibrant, shimmering green grass in her wake, contrasting sharply with the darkening woods. Polaris followed closely, her silver light cutting through the shadows like a beacon, while Majesty Pink’s pink glow added a soft warmth to the vivid image they painted.
As they neared the source of the disturbance, Polaris’s senses heightened. She could feel the faint traces of Chaos Energy in the air, a sure sign of Ayakashi presence. The forest seemed to grow denser, the trees closing in around them as if nature itself was trying to shield them from what lay ahead.
Fresia suddenly held up her hand, signaling for a halt. They had reached a small clearing where the energy felt strongest. Polaris and Majesty Pink crouched beside her, their eyes scanning the area for any signs of movement.
The atmosphere was tense, the only sound being the soft leaves rustling in the breeze. Polaris’s heart raced, her body poised for action. She glanced at Fresia, who gave a subtle nod, confirming that this was the place.
The trio moved cautiously, their eyes scanning the surroundings for any signs of the raptor-like beasts. The stillness of the night was occasionally broken by the rustling of leaves and the distant hoot of an owl.
Suddenly, Whiskers let out a sharp chirp, rushing out of the bag to perch himself on Majesty Pink’s shoulder.
“What is it, Whiskers?” Majesty Pink asked, her voice laced with concern.
Whiskers’s ears twitched, and he pointed his tiny paw towards a dense thicket up ahead.
Polaris nodded, holding her hand in the air. “Be ready. We may have company.”
Fresia took a deep breath, her eyes narrowing as she focused on the thicket.
Polaris’s heart raced as a sleek, silver rapier materialized in her hand, its blade gleaming in the moonlight. Majesty Pink summoned a pair of pink yo-yos by her side, their serrated edges glinting with a deadly promise. The anxiety that filled her eyes quickly evaporated as she grinned and began to bounce and build momentum on her toes.
The tension was palpable, each Magical Girl poised for the impending confrontation. The thicket rustled ominously, a low growl emanating from within. Polaris’s grip on her rapier tightened, her senses sharpening as she prepared for the attack.
Without warning, five raptor-like creatures burst forth from the thicket, their clay-like flesh rippling with each movement. Their sinewy legs propelled them forward with frightening speed, and their sharp, pointed, venomous tails lashed out behind them, leaving deep gouges in the earth.
The five creatures fanned out with a hiss, and their blue eyes glowed eerily in the darkness, fixating on the trio with predatory intent as they let out slow, rumbling chitters. Shadows billowed around them like a shroud, darkening the clearing even further. Each of them had serrated, webbed talons, sharp teeth lined around gaping lamprey-like maws, and small, feathered wings that shimmered with an otherworldly blue glow. Polaris felt a surge of adrenaline as the creatures advanced, their steps quick and silent despite their size.
And then, Heart Majesty Pink began to laugh.
It started as a giggle before becoming a strained, almost haughty chortle.
Her laughter filled the clearing, an unexpected sound that even the creatures paused in their advance, chittering in caution. Polaris shot Majesty Pink a puzzled look, unsure of what was going on with the petite, anxious girl.
“What’s gotten into you?” Polaris hissed through clenched teeth, her grip on her rapier never faltering.
Majesty Pink wiped away a tear of mirth, her yo-yos held loosely at her sides. “I’m sorry, it’s just... they look like oversized angry and edgy t-rex chickens! I can’t help it!”
Fresia shot a disapproving glance at Majesty Pink, but even she couldn’t suppress a small smile at the pink Magical Girl’s reaction.
The laughter seemed to break the tension momentarily, but it also seemed to provoke the creatures further. With a collective growl, they charged forward, their movements swift and coordinated as the pack hunters they were.
Polaris sprung into action, her rapier slicing through the air with precision. She deftly parried the first creature’s attack, spinning around to deliver a swift strike to its side. The creature let out a pained hiss, retreating momentarily before lunging at her again.
Fresia, her aura flaring with a green glow, extended her hands towards the ground. “Verdant Shield!” she shouted, and a wall of thorny vines sprouted from the earth, providing a barrier between them and the creatures.
She then focused her energy, her hands glowing with a bright green light. “Take this!” She lashed out with a vine whip, ensnaring one of the creatures and pulling it towards her with a swift motion. With a powerful kick, she sent it flying back into the thicket.
Majesty Pink, still giggling, unleashed her yo-yos with deadly precision. The serrated edges whirred as they sliced through the air, striking the creatures brutally as it tore and rended their clay-like flesh. One of the yo-yos wrapped around a creature’s leg, and she brought it crashing to the ground with a sharp tug. She then leaped into the air, delivering a spinning kick that sent another creature tumbling.
Polaris readied herself, summoning an orb of shadow in her left hand.
“Shadow Bind!” she commanded, hurling the orb at two of the creatures. The shadow expanded rapidly, enveloping them in darkness and immobilizing them. Seizing the opportunity, Polaris lunged forward, her rapier piercing through the shadow and striking at creatures’ hearts with lethal precision. The Ayakashi disintegrated into nothingness, disappearing in a swirl of inky darkness as Polaris regained her stance.
“Whiskers, on the right!” Majesty Pink instructed, pointing towards a creature attempting to flank Fresia.
With a determined chirp, Whiskers leaped off her shoulder and transformed into a streak of light, soaring towards the creature. In a blinding flash of pink energy, Whiskers reappeared before the creature, his tiny form expanding into a majestic, floppy-eared, lion-like creature with shimmering white fur the size of a Tibetan Mastiff.
His roar echoed through the clearing as he pounced, claws extended and jaws snapping shut on the raptor-like beast.
Polaris blinked in disbelief, stopping momentarily to gawk at the familiar.
“What.”
The chaos beast let out a strangled yelp as Whiskers pinned it to the ground, his jaws clamping over its head. Then, Whiskers yanked with a grunt of effort, tearing its head clean off. He rushed forward in a flash of pink light, moving to flank the creatures in the clearing.
Three more Ayakashi emerged from the foliage, and Majesty Pink began to spin her yo-yos around her, building momentum. Then, she jumped through the air in a streak of pink, landing among the new arrivals with a wild, almost feral grace. Her yo-yos lashed out like twin whirlwinds, striking with such speed and ferocity that Polaris had to do a double-take.
“COME ON, YOU LITTLE SHITS!” Majesty Pink screamed, her voice filled with exhilaration. She danced among the creatures, her movements a blur of pink, blue, and silver, each strike punctuated by the sharp whir of her yo-yos.
"GET SOME!"
Polaris shook off her surprise and refocused on the battle. She summoned another ball of shadow energy, sending it hurtling towards the remaining Ayakashi. The pack leaped out of the way, but one of the creatures had lagged. It let out a piercing screech as the shadow engulfed it, rendering it immobile and vulnerable.
With a swift motion, Polaris lunged forward, her rapier slicing through the darkness and striking at the creature’s core. The Ayakashi twitched briefly and disintegrated into nothingness as the others before it had.
“Any sights on the Baron?!” Polaris shouted, eyes searching for the pack leader.
Fresia briefly closed her eyes, her aura still glowing with a green light. “Not yet! Too much interference! Keep your guard up!” she called back, dodging a swipe from one of the remaining creatures. She twisted her hips, smashing it with a powerful kick that sent it crashing into a nearby tree with a loud thud. As the creature struggled to regain its footing, Fresia raised her hands towards the sky.
“Earth’s Embrace!” she chanted, her voice resonating with power. The ground beneath the creature erupted in a shower of rocks and debris, ensnaring it in a makeshift prison of earth and stone. The creature writhed and snarled, trapped within Fresia’s grasp.
Then, Fresia slammed her hands together, causing the rocks to close in on the creature, crushing it with a resounding crack. The Ayakashi fell silent, its form dissipating into motes of ink.
As the debris settled, Fresia turned her attention back to Polaris, her expression fierce and determined. “We need to smoke out the Baron. There’s too many of these varmint. Can’t pinpoint a solid read,” she said firmly.
Polaris nodded in agreement, her mind racing with strategies to locate and confront their elusive adversary.
“NO MERCY! TEAR INTO THEM UNTIL IT’S DONE, WHISKERS!” Majesty Pink’s voice cut through the air.
Together, the pair charged toward a pack of six incoming chaos beasts, separating into a whirlwind of destruction. Whiskers darted between them in a flash of pink light, corraling and binding them as he shifted between his small and large forms.
Each of the beasts caught by Whiskers was followed up with a savage slash by Majesty Pink’s yo-yos, spinning through the air with deadly precision. Each pass of her yo-yos was met with a spray of dark, inky motes as the creatures fell one by one.
“IS THIS ALL YOU HAVE?! Holy fuck. Why was I scared of you like a pathetic little coward!?” Majesty Pink shouted, bellowing out a laugh as she put her hands on her hips.
Then, she turned around at Fresia and Polaris with a manic, savage grin. “Polaris! Whiskers and I will clear the way for you two. We’ll take out the rest of these monsters and leave you a clear path to confront their pack leader! Fresia should be able to get a read once you separate from the pack.”
Fresia, her eyes narrowing in focus, nodded in agreement. “Got it, Maggie! Polaris, let’s make our move. Time to take down the big baddie!” Fresia shouted.
Polaris felt an energy coursing through her as she prepared for the final confrontation. “Lead the way, Fresia.”
With Majesty Pink and Whiskers holding the line, Polaris and Fresia rushed deeper into the forest. The air grew thicker with Chaos Energy, a sure sign that they were getting closer to their target.
Suddenly, Fresia halted, her hand shooting up in a signal to stop. Then, she touched her fingers to the grass, which glowed a brilliant dew green in response. “Hold up, Polaris. I’m gettin’ a strong readin’ just ahead. The Baron’s gotta be there.”
Polaris nodded, her senses on high alert. She could feel the malevolent presence looming ahead, its energy pulsating like a dark heartbeat. Polaris could feel Majesty Pink drawing closer in the background, her wild laughter and Whiskers’ fierce roars echoing through the tree.
They crept forward, the underbrush whispering beneath their feet, each step bringing them closer to the source of the disturbance. The forest seemed to hold its breath, the usual chorus of night creatures falling silent as if aware of the impending clash.
As they emerged into a larger clearing, the moonlight revealed a towering figure at the far end. The Baron, a massive Ayakashi, stood distinct from its subordinates. Its form was a grotesque masterpiece of shadow and malice, larger and far more imposing than the others.
Standing nearly twelve feet tall, it had spiky, shadowy clay-colored flesh that seemed to absorb the light around it. Its blue eyes burned with an unnatural brilliance, piercing the darkness easily.
Polaris and Fresia exchanged a glance and charged forward, their auras flaring as they prepared to engage the beast.
The Baron let out a deafening roar, its voice echoing through the clearing like a thunderclap. It charged towards them, each step shaking the ground, its massive form a blur of speed and power.
Polaris raised her rapier, a silver light emanating from the blade as she focused her energy.
“Silver Crescent Slash!” she called out, swinging her weapon in a wide arc. A crescent-shaped wave of silver energy shot toward the Baron, cutting through the air with a sharp hiss.
The Baron, however, was quicker than it appeared. It dodged the attack with an agile leap to the side, landing with a thud that sent shockwaves through the ground. It then retaliated with a swipe of its massive claw, aiming directly at Polaris.
Fresia intervened, leaping in front of Polaris with a burst of green energy. “Nature’s Aegis!” she shouted, summoning a barrier of interwoven vines that absorbed the impact. The vines held firm, but the rippling force of the blow sent Fresia staggering back.
Polaris seized the opportunity, her focus unwavering as she channeled her energy into another attack. “Shadow Bind!” she cried out, unleashing a wave of shadowy tendrils that snaked towards the Baron, aiming to ensnare and immobilize the massive beast. The tendrils wrapped around the Ayakashi’s limbs, its movements slowing as it struggled against the dark magic constricting it.
Fresia, recovering from the force of the Baron’s blow, surged forward, her hands glowing with an intense green light. “Thorned Fury!” she roared, launching a barrage of razor-sharp thorns towards the Baron. The thorns pierced its shadowy flesh, eliciting roars of pain as dark, inky blood spurted from the wounds. Despite the damage inflicted, the Baron fought against the bindings, its raw power beginning to tear through the shadows holding it captive.
Polaris, realizing the need for a more powerful approach, concentrated, her aura pulsating with a mixture of dark and silver light. “Haa!” she exclaimed, her rapier glowing with a blinding intensity.
She leaped high, the moonlight casting her shadow over the beast, and descended in a devastating arc, aiming to deliver a decisive blow.
As she closed in, the Baron broke free of its restraints with a furious roar, swiping its massive arm in a desperate counterattack. Polaris twisted in mid-air, narrowly avoiding the claw but losing her balance in the process. She landed hard, rolling away from the beast’s reach, her breath catching in her throat.
Fresia, not missing a beat, rushed to Polaris’s side, helping her to her feet. “Ya alright?” she asked quickly, her concern evident.
Polaris nodded, pushing through the pain. “I’m fine. Let’s finish this.”
Polaris and Fresia regrouped, facing the Baron as it prepared for another assault. Despite its injuries, the creature seemed undeterred, its gaze filled with a malevolent blue fire.
The air crackled with tension, the moon casting long shadows across the battlefield as the standoff continued.
Just as the Baron lunged forward, a dazzling pink burst filled the clearing. A cruel, girlish laughter echoed through the night as streaks of light scattered around the clearing.
“HEARTFELT SPIRAL MAELSTROM!” Majesty Pink shouted in a manic glee, unleashing a torrent of pink light from her yo-yos, which spun around her in a mesmerizing storm of energy.
The Baron, caught off guard by the sudden onslaught, roared in fury as the pink energy enveloped it, the serrated edges of the yo-yos slicing through its shadowy flesh. The creature thrashed wildly, trying to escape the barrage, but Majesty Pink was relentless.
The petite, pink warrior continued her assault, her yo-yos leaving a trail of pink sparks in their wake as she spun in the air. Then, she landed on the soft earth, strutting forward in a calm cat walk, her yo-yos clicking in sync with her boots. A sadistic grin spread across her face as she admired her handiwork. Huge, gaping chunks of the pack leader’s clay-like
Flesh had been torn out, revealing more of the blue pulsating energy that fueled it.
The pack leader hissed and snarled, its remaining strength focused on the three warriors before it. It gathered its remaining power in its mouth, readying itself for one final, devastating blow.
Suddenly, Whiskers darted out from the shadows, his massive form bursting through the underbrush. He launched himself at the Baron, his jagged claws slashing through the air as he attacked with a fierce roar. The Baron screeched back, meeting Whiskers’ charge with a massive claw swipe, the force of the impact shaking the ground.
“Polaris, follow up!” Fresia shouted, summoning a wreath of green and golden light to overlap Polaris’s aura.
Polaris nodded, focusing her energy and drawing her rapier before her. She closed her eyes, feeling Fresia’s energy flowing like a river. Focusing on her own aura, she became one with the blade as the silver light around her rapier danced and shimmered, taking on a more intense green hue.
Shadows swirled around Polaris as she prepared to unleash her most powerful technique. She dropped into a lunging stance and channeled all her energy into her blade. With a swift flourish, she darted toward the Baron, the enhanced aura of silver and green trailing behind her like a comet’s tail.
“Eclipse Strike: Nature’s Harmony Variation!” Polaris shouted as she surged forth in a shadowy blur.
As she closed in on the Baron, time seemed to slow.
The creature’s head snapped toward Polaris as her silver blade pierced its heart with unerring precision. A shockwave of light exploded from the impact, bisecting the beast and illuminating the clearing with a blinding green flash.
The Baron let out a final, agonized roar as its form began to disintegrate, collapsing into a cloud of dark motes that dissipated into the night. The clearing fell silent, the tension dissipating as the threat was vanquished.
Polaris stood tall, her chest heaving with exertion, her rapier glowing softly in the aftermath.
Fresia approached, a grin spreading across her face. “That was one hell of a move, Polaris. Ya did good.”
Majesty Pink, her yo-yos retracting with a click, joined them, her expression suddenly fading into a wide smile of relief. “We did it! That was incredible!”
Polaris scanned the clearing, her eyes finally resting on a small, glowing orb amidst the debris—the Baron’s core. A valuable commodity, indeed. She stepped forward, her movements graceful and measured, to pick up the core.
As her fingers closed around the pulsating energy, a shadow of concern flickered across her features, quickly masked by her usual composed demeanor.
“Reckon this little gem’s gonna fetch us a pretty penny, huh?” Fresia commented, walking next to Polaris with a grin.
“Us?” Polaris blinked in surprise, turning to face her companion.
“Yeah, we took the mission together, right? We split the rewards, fair and square,” Fresia replied, her smile unwavering.
Polaris hesitated, her gaze shifting between Fresia and Majesty Pink.
Maggie nodded, “That’s right! Tuition and umm… expenses have been tight, so every bit helps.”
Polaris’s expression softened, understanding their situation. “Of course. However… I insist that you both take the full share of the reward. Consider it a token of my appreciation for your efforts today.”
Fresia raised an eyebrow, a knowing smile playing on her lips. “You sure ’bout that, Polaris? You did a heck of a job too, y’know.”
Polaris shook her head, a faint smile touching her lips. “I have... sufficient resources at my disposal. Please, allow me to contribute in this way.”
Maggie’s eyes widened in surprise, then filled with gratitude. “T-thank you, Polaris. That’s really generous of you.”
Fresia nodded, tipping an imaginary hat with a grin. “Ha! Well, I had my suspicions, but you really are an uptown girl, aren’t ya? Well, don’t worry about that too much, but I insist we treat ya to a home-cooked dinner one of these days.”
Polaris couldn’t help but chuckle at Fresia’s remark with a shrug. “Perhaps I am, but tonight... I am simply a comrade in arms. I will take you up on that offer eventually, though.”
Her gaze lingered on the core in her hand for a moment before she handed it to Fresia.
As they turned to leave the clearing, Polaris glanced back at the fading remnants of the battle.
The moon shone brightly above, casting a serene light over the forest. For a moment, she allowed herself to revel in the quiet victory.
Maggie waved away a sudden shiver, her face twisting into a grimace as she wiped away some of the dirt covering her skirt. “Ugh, I feel like I need a long shower after all that.”
Fresia chuckled, patting her on the back. “You and me both, Maggie. Let’s head back and get ourselves cleaned up. We’ve earned it.”
The three girls made their way back through the forest on a brisk jog, the adrenaline of the battle slowly ebbing away as they navigated the familiar path left by Fresia’s abilities. The night air was cool and refreshing, a welcome relief after the heat of battle.
Polaris led the way on Fresia’s glowing trail back toward the distant spire, her posture poised and graceful even in the aftermath of the fight. She couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride in their teamwork and the strength they had displayed. It was a rare feeling, one that she cherished in the moment.
Fresia hummed a tune as they ran, matching Polaris’s pace. “Ya know, I reckon we make a pretty darn good team. What do ya say we do this more often?”
Polaris hesitated — she had never been truly on a team before and didn’t think she deserved it on many levels. She was a cruel bully, a manipulative tyrant to those weaker than her, and yet, here she was, fighting side by side with these two remarkable girls. She had promised herself she would change but quickly fell back into old patterns in her civilian life. She had not climbed the social ladder as she had, of course, but she had managed to present and maintain her position and gained some followers along the way. For the sake of her own security, she told herself, but it left a poor taste in her mouth.
Majesty Pink chimed in, following on her other side. “Come on! I think we make a great team, Polaris. We’ve got strength, speed, and we have… whatever you’ve been doing with that shadow magic. Imagine what else we could accomplish together!”
Polaris slowed her pace to a stop, considering their words. Fresia and Maggie shared a look, their faces expectant and hopeful.
The thought of being part of a genuine team was appealing, even if it contradicted everything she had believed. But perhaps, just perhaps…
Polaris took a deep breath, feeling the weight of her past mistakes bearing down on her. But she knew she couldn’t let them define her future. She had to be better, and maybe this was her chance.
“I… I wouldn’t mind that, actually,” she admitted quietly.
Whiskers immediately scrambled onto Maggie’s shoulder, letting out a soft chirp of approval.
Maggie beamed, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “Really? That’s awesome! We’re gonna be unstoppable!”
Fresia nodded, a broad grin spreading across her face. “Well, ain’t that just the best news I’ve heard all day? Guess it's official, Polaris.”
Polaris allowed herself a small smile, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. “Thank you. I look forward to our future endeavors together.”
As they resumed their journey back to town, Polaris couldn’t help but feel a sense of belonging, a feeling that had eluded her for so long. For the first time in a while, she felt hopeful about the path ahead, not just as a lone warrior but as part of a team.
Suddenly, something prickled at the edge of Polaris’s senses, and her happiness evaporated like a cold splash of water as all three girls suddenly stopped in place.
Fresia’s brow furrowed, and she clutched her side, her steps faltering. “Somethin’s not right,” she muttered, her voice laced with discomfort.
Polaris and Maggie exchanged worried glances. “Fresia, what is it?” Polaris asked, concern etching her features.
Fresia’s pace slowed further, and she grimaced, her hand moving to her chest. “I... I dunno. Feels like somethin’s resonatin’ with the spire I’d summoned earlier,” she explained, her voice strained.
The trio halted, and Fresia dropped to her knees, gasping for air. “Somethin’s wrong... real wrong,” she managed to say between labored breaths.
Polaris knelt beside her, her eyes searching Fresia’s face for any sign of what could be causing her pain. Maggie, too, hovered close, her brow furrowed in worry.
The serenity of the agricultural landscape that had once surrounded them seemed to vanish, replaced by a growing sense of unease. The fields that had been bathed in the warm glow of sunset now appeared ominous in the moonlight, and the gentle rustling of crops in the breeze now sounded like whispered warnings.
And then, the distant sound of sirens began to pierce the night air, their urgent wails echoing from nearby town. The ground beneath them started to tremble, the vibrations growing stronger with each passing second. Polaris’s eyes widened as she realized the gravity of the situation.
“No…” Polaris whispered, her experience kicking in immediately.
Fresia’s agony intensified, her cries echoing through the quiet fields as blue energy crackled around her, the grass tied to the tendrils sprawling from her spire rapidly wilting and blackening. Polaris’s heart raced as she tried to comfort Fresia, her mind racing for a solution.
“We need to contain this,” Polaris said, determination steeling her voice. She extended her hands towards Fresia, her shadow magic swirling around her fingers. “I’m going to create a gap to separate us from the chaos energy. Fresia, hey! Stay with me.”
Fresia’s vulnerable green eyes met Polaris’s, pain and determination mingling in her gaze. With a nod, she focused her remaining strength, her hands trembling as she fought to regain control. Polaris’s shadow magic enveloped them, creating a void that shielded them from the chaotic energy that had enveloped the spire.
The ground continued to rumble as Polaris crouched down, grasping Fresia’s hands. The flowery Magical Girl looked up in surprise as Polaris’s shadowy form momentarily flickered before stabilizing into a solid barrier around them.
Fresia’s breaths grew steadier as the shadowy barrier provided a momentary respite.
With a surge of willpower, she whispered, “Got... got it.” The blue energy crackling through the grass began to recede, the distant spire’s light dimming until it vanished entirely, leaving behind a scorched patch of earth.
As the immediate threat subsided, Polaris helped Fresia to her feet, her eyes scanning the horizon for any signs of further danger. The sirens continued to wail in the distance, an overwhelming reminder that this was far from over.
Majesty Pink stood beside them, her face pale but determined. “We need to get back to town, see what’s going on.”
Polaris nodded, her mind racing with possibilities. What was going on?
Immediately as they began to move again, the ground shook with increasing intensity, sending waves of fear through Polaris’s core. Her eyes caught a glimpse of something in the air—shimmering rifts that seemed to tear at the fabric of reality itself.
A cold dread settled in Polaris’s heart as she realized the true extent of what they were facing.
“A high-magnitude event... out here?!” she murmured, her voice barely audible over the sirens and the trembling earth. That rift looked typical for a Magnitude 3 event, at the least!
Polaris’s eyes widened in horror as the truth dawned on her. This was no ordinary anomaly; it was an out-of-control, high-magnitude Chaos Event that could overwhelm the rural communities out here.
Then, Maggie’s voice pierced the chaos, her eyes glassy with fear.
“W-we’ve got to go!” Maggie cried, pointing to the town as Whiskers chirped in agreement.
Polaris scooped up the pale, exhausted Fresia over her shoulders and dashed forward, her cloak billowing behind her.
“Well... at least we ain't gonna have a boring night, girls,” Fresia quipped weakly.
Polaris sighed, shaking her head while trying to maintain her focus.
Sometimes, Polaris wondered if this was just karma for her sins. But, there would be time to speculate later.
For now, she had a town to protect.
