1: The Prologue

1: The Prologue

This land’s magic came from ancient runes carved into the skin of the caster. These runes drew power from the soul, shifted and transformed it into a magical output. In order to tap into the rune’s power the caster had to touch the rune with a hand.

The rain spat onto the cobbled roads of Dawnwood. Thunder caused the windows to violently shake and rattle. Dawnwood is usually a lively town with dancing, parties, and celebrations. But not that night. That night the streets were left barren and empty. That night the only sound you heard was the wailing of the harsh wind and the roaring of the thunder.

That night was the cleansing. At the beginning of every month, half a dozen elite armed guards paraded through the town of Dawnwood and killed anyone that they could find wandering outside the confines of their home. They were called “Cleansers” and they were soulless killers, who wouldn’t stop for anyone. They were apart of a religious organisation that called themselves “The Crimson Order”. The Crimson Order was so consumed with this power that they despised anyone else that harnessed it. Though, those who did survive and still knew the art of carving runes accurately were called Carvers.

Carvers were the only people you could go to for a rune implant. Runes healed with use, and consequently needed to be tended to often. Less powerful runes were placed on the arms. Powerful runes couldn’t draw enough power from the soul on the arms, therefore Carvers formed the rune into either the chest or neck. These runes helped many fight against the Crimson Order. Majority were killed in the process. Though beings who had survived the purge were named Runics. Runics were survivors, nothing less than vermin in the eyes of the Crimson Order. But Runics were getting stronger, more controlled. That’s what made them dangerous.
