8. A rude awakening

8. A rude awakening

“…y! …ey! …hey! HEY!” Theo was suddenly woken up from deep sleep by a high-pitched voice franticly screaming into his ear. Not knowing what was going on and still feeling incredibly groggy, he slowly opened his eyes to locate the source of the disturbance.

What his eyes landed upon was a tiny humanoid creature in the shape of a woman with 2 pairs of insect-like crystalline wings, blond hair, and eyes that matched her green dress. Even though she was flying, her wings didn’t appear to move, only giving off sparkles of green light. It would be a magical scene if the face of the flying entity wasn’t completely red and contorted in a frown.

“Hey, you dimwit, are you listening to me?! Are you deaf or something?!” Theo finally recollected himself, taking a look around and assessing the strange situation. He appeared to be in the middle of a perfectly flat plot of land, consisting of only cracked and dry earth. Even though the sky was completely black and lacked any stars, moon, or even a sun, he could see his surroundings perfectly, even if there wasn’t much to look at.

“What’s going on?”

“What do you mean ‘What’s going on?’, you are the one who should explain that to me!”

“Huh?” Because of his confusing awakening, Theo still didn’t have time to properly organize his thoughts, his mind trailing to the last memory he could recollect. The scene of Earth disintegrating, the changes to his body, and the entity that hurt him. In retrospect, meeting a pixie, fairy or whatever that thing was shouldn’t be that strange, should it?

“Ok. Can you calm down a little so that we can have a normal conversation?”

Only now did he realize that he was naked, so he quickly covered himself, but the fairly didn’t seem to mind, continuing with her rant.

“No! You can’t ask me to calm down! Do you have any idea what you did?!”

Now even Theo started to lose his temper.

“No, I don’t, maybe do less screaming and a little more explaining.”

The fairy’s cheeks puffed up into a pout, the only thing missing at that point was some smoke coming out of her ears.

Seeing that this was getting him nowhere Theo decided to take the lead.

“How about this, let's start with introductions first. I am Theo, and you are?”

“I am a member of the greatest spirit clan!” She said that sentence full of pride, replacing some of her anger with arrogance.

“Sure, what about your name, and with a little less volume this time” His nonchalance seemed to annoy the fairy.

“How dare you ask me for my name!”

“Ugh, this is getting us nowhere.”

He put his face on his knees, while still hiding his crotch with his hands, searching his mind for any memories that would explain his current predicament, and ignored the fairy that continued screaming at him without stop.

After what felt like an hour, the tiny creature seemed to calm down somewhat.

“So, are you ready to have a proper conversation now?”

“Hmph! Fine.”

“Let’s restart. My name is Thoe and who might you be?” Said Theo, looking strangely similar to an adult talking to a toddler.

“I… I don’t have a name” This sentence came out more like a whisper, unlike her usual screaming. She looked strangely embarrassed by it.

“You don’t have a name?”

“No! It’s all your fault, if not for you, I would already have my own realm to manage and gain a name. Not only that, but I am even stuck in a form of an inferior creature! What did you do to me?!” Although she rose her voice again, unlike the angry and furious impression she gave off before, her teary eyes and pouty face made her look wronged and strangely cute.

“Ok, ok, calm down. I don’t know what you are talking about and would like to know what’s happening as much as you, so can you explain what happened?”

“Sniff... Sniff… I was supposed to get my own realm to manage today, b-but when the bonding process finished, I was transported here. I was even forced to take on this inferior form.”

“And why are you blaming me for that?”

“Of course, you are to blame! I don’t wanna be your slave!”

“Slave? What does slavery have to do with anything?”

“I was forced to bond with a realm that already has an owner and given the instructions to help you along your path or whatever that means.”

“Who gave you those instructions?” The more he learned, the more complicated everything seemed to become.

“I don’t know, whatever that accursed thing inside of you is!”

“Inside of me?” Theo asked with a baffled expression.

“Sniff… Yes, that system or whatever it’s called. Now, release me!” The last part had was screamed with an uncomfortable increase of volume.

“Please stop yelling, and what do you mean sys…” But he was quickly cut off by another yell.

“Don’t you dare tell me to stop yelling. I am only this moody because of this stupid body!”

“Again, I have no idea what’s going on, so maybe if you help me clear things up we can solve the situation.”

“Sniff… Fine.”

“You said system?”

“Yes… There is something strange inside of you, it's not like a normal system. I haven’t heard of anything like it before, but it seems alive, and it constantly gives me instructions and information.”

“Normal system?”

That question only made the fairy look back at him as if he was an idiot

“So, there are other types of systems?”

“Duh, are you from a world without one? Oh right, now that we are on that topic, what are you? Although your outer appearance is that of a normal human, you definitely aren’t one.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“Well, when I first came here, I saw your body slowly materializing from some strange white energy that even I've never seen before. Yet now you appear to be like a normal mortal human if you ignore the soul that is.” It appeared that curiosity made her forget all about her anger, at least for now.

“Is something wrong with my soul?” Theo didn’t know if he should feel concerned or not.

“Not really, no. It’s more like you don’t have one.”

“Is that normal?” He wasn’t sure what that meant yet, but lacking a soul certainly wasn’t good, right? Did he sell his soul to the devil when he fantasized about having a system before going unconscious?

“Oh, no, absolutely not. But you do seem to have something else in its place, but I don’t know what it is. So, what are you?” As she said that, her eyes radiated pure curiosity, akin to that of a small animal that got to see the world for the first time.

Theo decided to leave his lack of a soul as a problem for another time. Since he was in a completely new environment and the only person who had a clue of what was going on was the fairy in front of him, he decided to share his past with her.

“I already said it many times before, but I have no clue of what’s going on, I think that this will go a lot smoother if I just tell you my story.” Although telling somebody he just met all the secrets of his life might not seem like a good idea, he decided to go out on a limb. She did imply that she was forced under the command of his system and while he was dying of curiosity of what that system was, he decided to leave it for after he deals with the fairy.
