When Shaun entered the lively city together with Ava he felt truly happy. It took a bit but he laughed along with Ava as she reminded him of some embarrassing situations they had been in. For just a few hours he was truly reminded of what it used to be like. It felt weird to be in a city full of regular people just going about their day but for some reason, Shaun didn’t have any trouble accepting what was happening at the moment.
As for whether he should do anything to prepare for the apocalypse, he would worry about that in due time, for now, he just wanted to enjoy himself since even though there would be plenty of days within the apocalypse, there was only one before them. Shaun even went to the bank and took out all the money he had, it was only a few hundred bucks but it was more than enough to do a few fun activities while still having plenty left over to buy some supplies later on.
Shaun made up an excuse saying he was making some extra money online so that she wouldn’t feel too guilty for using so much of his money to go do stuff. They did an escape room together and even went laser-shooting with some other people.
It was only at five in the afternoon, Shaun figured it was time to start making some preparations. He told Ava he had to go get a surprise for her, so she went over to McDo on her own for the time being and waited for him.
When she was there Shaun started going toward a multitude of shops. He bought two large backpacks first from a shop selling supplies for climbing. After this, he went to the bookstore to buy an atlas focused on Europe, and especially Belgium, the country they were currently in. Finally, he went to go get Ava’s ‘surprise’ buying one for himself while he was at it.
He also wanted to buy some other equipment they might need but he was running out of money, so he just settled for a bunch of candy and other food that was tasty but would expire soon and be impossible to make later on.
When Shaun arrived at the McDo, Ava felt rather surprised by what he had with him. She saw he was wearing a large backpack and holding another one in his hand. Both of them weren’t full for sure but she could still see there were some things weighing it down as Shaun’s arm was shaking slightly.
When he joined the table she was about to ask what the backpacks were for but he stopped her: “Let’s eat first, I’ll let ya know later.”
Ava nodded as she munched on another one of the fries that she had ordered, she couldn’t help but notice Shaun was acting much more confident than he normally did.
When they left Ava refrained asking what was in the backpacks as she followed Shaun to wherever it was they were going, she did carry one of the backpacks though, she noted it wasn’t that heavy but not light either. She couldn’t help but wonder what was in the backpack while they walked. Earlier when she picked up the backpack she heard things shifting so it certainly shouldn’t be a singular item, but as for what it actually was, she had no idea.
They walked for thirty minutes before arriving at the location Shaun wanted to be at. It was six in the afternoon meaning there was only about one more hour until the apocalypse happened. He decided to come one hour early just in case his memory wasn’t entirely accurate which was entirely possible.
They were now a decent walk away from the city, close to a typical-looking farmhouse. The farmer had probably left for the city to go get some seeds, they didn’t see a car on the driveway and the farmlands were recently harvested.
Shaun plopped onto the farmlands about fifty meters away from the house. And Ava plopped down beside him, somewhat confused as to why he had brought her here of all places.
In actuality, he wanted to bring her inside of the farmhouse as there was something there that might help Ava out but he knew that she definitely wouldn’t want to break into a house, so he decided to await the upcoming events here.

“Alright Ava, I suppose it’s just about time to give you your present isn’t it?”
Ava smiled as he reached over to the backpack she was carrying, she purposely made it a little harder for him as she leaned backward on purpose, teasing him a bit, but he managed to grab the ‘package’ all the same.
It was a black box about half a meter in length and twenty centimeters in width, the box itself also held no markings showing what it might be.
‘A necklace?’ Ava guessed as she gracefully took the box out of Shaun’s hands.
“Alright Ava, open it up.”
Ava looked at him with a grin before slowly opening the box, she really liked opening presents. When the box was fully opened she was greeted by a combat knife with a blade about thirty centimeters long. The handle was very pretty, it was black with green accentuations. The blade itself was also a pure black.
As for the sheath, even though it was also black there were a number of green protrusions on it, showing depictions of a snake.
When Shaun saw how Ava was gazing at the knife, he knew he had chosen correctly, she seemed to be entranced by it, gripping it in several ways.
After a bit, she sheather the knife before jumping toward him pulling him into a sudden hug “Thank you so much Shaun, it’s beautiful!”
Knowing she actually liked it Shain felt relieved, even though effectiveness was the most important, it was always best if you properly liked your weapon. If you didn’t, then you wouldn’t use it all that effectively and you probably wouldn’t take proper care of it.
Shaun smiled as he grabbed a similar box out of his own backpack. He opened it up and revealed a knife that looked very similar to the one he had given to Ava, except that the handle had some silver in it instead of the green on the one from Ava. His sheath was also nearly the same as the one from Ava except that the depictions of the snake were in silver.
Originally he wanted to get the same combat knife for both of them but the shop only had one of each so he went with this.
“You wanna know how to use it?” Shaun asked, a smile on his face.
“Yeah, if only there was someone around to teach me!” Ava acted melodramatically.
“Well, my fair lady, you are in luck today! I happen to know a thing or two about using this sort of equipment.”
“Oh really, well then my noble lord, I must ask you for guidance.”
Ava bowed as if she had a dress on before both of them laughed a bit.
But Shaun got a bit more serious as he showed Ava how to hold her weapon, how to effectively stab, slash, and block.
Ava was a little surprised at how serious Shaun took this as he actually seemed somewhat skilled but she was all there for it as she started practicing genuinely, it was rather fun, practicing like this.
Shaun was rather surprised at Ava’s endurance as she managed to hold on for forty-five minutes. If he remembered the previous night better he probably wouldn’t have felt quite as surprised. But as for himself, he felt incredibly frustrated, after these forty-five minutes he also felt exhausted himself, he felt incredibly weak.
They both sat down again and Ava was about to make a joke about their ‘training’ when she saw Shaun’s expression. He looked toward the sky with an incredibly grim expression, he looked more serious than she had ever seen him.
“I’m afraid the main performance is about to begin.”
Ava was about to ask what he meant when she noticed what he was looking at. There was a light in the sky far above them, it looked like a star but bigger. Then a second light appeared, and a third. Soon hundreds of lights covered the sky, it became clear they were comets. Some burned up in the atmosphere while others made it through, heading for the ground at insane speeds.
Ava felt her breathing halt, was this the end of the word?
She was right, it was, but only the beginning of the end. Most of the comets burned up before they reached the ground and there were no comets that came down anywhere in the vicinity. Soon the sky seemed clear again, for just about five seconds. It was then they noticed that in front of the sun, something else had appeared, another planet, covering it completely. The entire world seemed to be coated in a sea or red as the sun got covered, the white light was gone, never to return.
