29. The phone call

29. The phone call

Ed almost wanted to laugh. And here he’d been prepared to stuff it all down, suck it up, and sit it out until he was powerful enough to find out the truth. There was no way this was real. “So you,” He gestured both hands at her. “Are telling me. That Mr. Garry killed my only living relative because he thought it was a favor to me?”

Serah looked confused. Very impressive when you had no facial expressions. “It was not?”

No, this had to be some sort of trap. Ed had no idea how, or even what it could be for but this was just too absurd to be real. He sat back down, because apparently he’d been standing.

“Ok. Just hypothetically speaking, let's say sure, it was a favor. Why didn’t he ask me?”

Serah only seemed to be growing increasingly confused now. Ed felt a bit of heat, like someone’d lit a match on his shoulder and he slapped his neck. Looking over there was a small scorch mark on his shirt.

“There was a bug.” She explained matter-a-factly, “I incinerated it, you are welcome.”

Ed looked at her blankly. Seriously? Ed thought to himself, if this was the world, he wasn’t even sure if he wanted to live in it. No, no. This could still be some sort of big misunderstanding. It didn’t have to be political schemes or dehumanization. It could be… like… like, yeah Ed didn’t really know. Actually, this was a world of magic wasn’t it.

“You can’t like… bring her back or anything right? Revive her as a ghost? Brain in a jar? Orpheus quest?”

She seemed to pause for a second. “Would you give me a moment?” She dug into her pocket and removed a surprisingly modern cell phone. He’d been half expecting a flip phone considering Mr. Garry’s age and whatnot, but here she was, dialing away at a touchscreen. “Yes, no, Is the revival of Harriet Jacobs possible? The human you disintegrated this morning, around three AM. No, he seems very distraught. He seems to have somewhat cared about that human you killed.”

She put her hand on the receiver.

“He says he did not do it. Also she can not be revived, her soul is gone.”

“Could I talk to him?” Ed didn’t know why he was doing this but he felt like he just had to talk to Mr. Garry.

“Hey! Ed! Yeah, um… sorry about your…uh.” he seemed to whisper to someone else for a second. “What’s that connection forty three A?” Then a bit louder. “Aunt? It’s just like um, free the oppressed and all that. You were oppressed right? No?”

When Ed didn’t say anything he seemed to continue nervously.

“Did you know I’m a firm lobbyist for POMT? The Party of Mystical Transparency? Huge human lover base, I have like tons of human lover friends… Err, acquaintances. Err, look I’m buds with human lovers. Huge fans.”

He seemed to get further away again. “Does this sound weird forty three A? I feel like I’m just progressively sounding worse here.”

“Ed?” Mr. Garry chuckled lightly. “You there?”

There were just so many things wrong with this. “Did you kill my aunt?”

“Yes? I mean she was still breathing when I got there but she was a soulless meat puppet.”

He’d just called Harriet a soulless meat puppet.

His voice faded out again. “Wrong wording? What do you know? You don’t even have a soul.”

And now he was apparently taking conversation advice from what Ed was starting to suspect was yet another inhuman soulless construct.

“I mean to say she was dead when I got there. No soul, just a husk. Are you sure you’re not just pulling my leg here? That really doesn’t seem like something you’d want to be living with. I mean, some of them have souls so small they may as well be a husk.” It seemed he hadn’t even bothered to remove the phone this time. “Anyway. Didn’t kill her, wasn’t me. Unless you were living with a husk… which is a big possibility. Uh… did you know I’m a huge huskies fan?”

Ok, well if this was a trap Ed wasn’t sure if he wanted to live in a world like that, but if it wasn’t… “Look, Mr. Garry? You did not do me any favors, I am very sad about this and I would like some space now.” Ed hung up the phone.
