3- Darkness Before the Dawn

3- Darkness Before the Dawn

I knew I had to make the best of my situation and so I went to the study hall.

Wherever you look bookshelves lined the way, mages from every corner of Solarune came here to read books collected from everywhere.

I thought I might as well pick up a book myself—I sat down, opened the book and before I could close it—it drew me in.

"Damnit all—what happened?"

I guess it was the book.

Just as I was about to stand on up someone else appeared out of nowhere.

The girl sighed before she explained to me: that this book is a traveling book—a one-way portal to somewhere in Solarune.

This one in particular reminded me a lot like the underworld.

"Why did you follow me?"

"I know who you're"

"You do?—of course you do, everyone by now knows who I am"

"You are a fool—I don't need to know nothing more, nothing less"

"I could tell that you didn't intend to travel here and so I thought I might help you"

"I don't need your help, especially for someone who thinks I am a fool," I said.

"You do know how dangerous this place is, right?" She had said.

"I am well aware of this, I mean look around this place isn't the most welcoming is it?"

"You got a point there,—knowing is half the battle"

"Where the hell are we?" I asked

She sighed once again, "You really don't know? this is Kargath—a lawless place where even Lords don't tread"

"Hey—don't go off your own, you may think you can handle it but I promise you that this place is more dangerous than you can imagine"

"I'm cursed by the Gods, what makes you think this place scares me?"

"If it doesn't scare you then you should at least think more carefully to what sort of place makes even mages second think coming here"

"When I saw you get transported by that book, I followed you because that's what a mage does—"

"I won't have someone throw away their life out of stupidity now do you want my help or not?" The girl had said.

This content has been misappropriated from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

"I don't even know your name"

"My name's Sahara, now tell me yours"

I thought in one way that I could hide who I was but to someone like her I could see that the truth was the only answer.

"You can call me Zal, everyone calls me that"

"They call you king?" She had said .

"You speak Thaman?"

"Only little enough to know that is all"

"It's a nickname I was given when I was young"

It seems as though news hadn't yet reached her even though the council had its meeting.

"it's much better if we don't get split-up"

"I'm assuming you are a mage?" She questioned the fact in her voice.

"No, I am not a mage but I am cursed by the Gods"

"What is this curse you keep on talking about?" Sahara had asked.

"I am like shadow—if this curse is not broken I will fade away as such"

"I see, has that brought you to Arcana?" She asked.

Before I could answer she urged me to be silent, a man passed by as we lurked in the shadows, and he—was dressed in black and red and I should've known what that meant but even in all my studies this eluded my teachers—perhaps my teachers didn't believe in polluting my mind with the nature of these people and what they are in turn capable of—

"They are shadesworn and it would do you good to stay far away from them"

"I figured as much form the blood that stained his clothes"

"We must find some shelter for the night, I think I have an idea," Sahara had said.

"And what would that be, if you take a good look there's nothing out here but rain and misery"

"Glad to see you're so optimistic, come with me I know exactly of a place where we could stay to at least keep dry from the rain"

Sahara kept on looking and she searched for some place but didn't tell me what she was looking for as if she didn't believe I could find it either.

Just when I wanted to give on up, she found a temple and climbed to its roof, she drove a dagger through the glass window and opened it that way.

"See, dry and warm a place where we can stay the night and leave morning come"

It was where we wouldn't be bothered, as the attic hasn't saw trace of anyone as it looked like for quite some time.

People in such a place must've given up on faith and belief so much so that they would rather to pray to the Gods they know byname: violence, lies, and greed.

"I want nothing of this place, I want to go back as soon as I can" I said.

"Rest up for now, at least by morning there will be more visibility"

"Let's hope it doesn't rain anymore than it should," I said.

"G'night"

"Night," I said.

Out of the hay and empty sacks made for decent pillows and a few blankets made for not a cold night.

Thelos must be panicking by now, as it's not the first time I ventured off on my own before but this is different altogether—much more dangerous but now that I have a mage with me it doesn't seem as daunting be it as it be.

----------------------------------------

I couldn't sleep but Afterall I witnessed in these few days it made sense as to why I couldn't get things out of my head.

I had awaken before Sahara —I suppose I should be thankful for finding a warm place to stay the night and seeing as this was her idea she deserved that at least—and so I awaited until she woke up herself and then I would thank her.

Now all of Solarune must've heard word of what happened in Thamos—I wouldn't be suprised if the story is twisted and turned and flipped on its head to suit The Lords and Ladies of light's perogative.

In fact—I expect them to do just that.

Nothing seems to surprise me as of late.
