Mysterious Vendor

Xian approached the goods vendor’s stall, taking in the modest setup under the tent. The tent was a simple structure, several meters wide, with a table in the center where various goods were displayed. The foundation was made of a sturdy wooden stand positioned centrally, ensuring ample space inside. The hem of the tent was secured with knots and tied to sticks, keeping the fabric taut.

The vendor's collection was diverse, featuring an assortment of weapons, armor, trinkets, rings, potions, and several wands and staffs. The display was meticulously arranged, each item showcased with care. The weapon rack, in particular, caught their attention with its precise organization.

As they entered the tent, they were greeted by a warm, candlelit ambiance. The old vendor, with a smile on his face, welcomed them. He was wiping a dagger clean with a tablecloth, his leather apron suggesting a life of practical work. His muscular build and the sweat glistening on his skin, illuminated by the candlelight, hinted at years of experience and effort.

“Good evening, sirs. What can I assist you with today? Weapons? Potions?” he inquired. “Or perhaps you’re interested in a necromancer’s wand?” he added with a hint of curiosity.

Xian, taken aback, asked, “How did you know?”

Merlin, who had been silently observing, scratched his chin thoughtfully. “Well, as a vendor, it’s essential to understand the market demands,” he said with a chuckle. “But honestly, I didn’t know you were a necromancer. It was just a lucky guess,” he added with a smirk, revealing his teeth.

The room was filled with the soothing scent of lavender, which Xian noted as he took in the surroundings. Lavender and other healing herbs were prominently displayed among the goods.

The vendor then handed a piece of bread to Xian. “Consider this an investment,” he said. “As for the wand, would you like to take it on loan? It’s a special offer for new customers.” He punctuated his statement by driving the dagger into the table. He then retrieved a wand featuring an orb gripped by an eagle’s claw.

“This wand costs 1200 gold coins. You can use it now and repay me later. Don’t think about running off, as I have ways to track you down,” he warned with a mischievous smile. “Here’s a contract. Sign it, and we’ll be all set.”

Merlin took the contract and carefully reviewed it to avoid any legal or financial pitfalls. The contract stipulated that Xian would owe 1200 gold coins by the next month. Should he fail to pay, he would be required to work as the vendor’s assistant for a week.

Xian, intrigued, asked, “Why are you doing this?”

The vendor’s expression softened as he responded, “I’m a necromancer too. I can sense that you share my affinity for necromancy. The problem is that necromancers are few and far between compared to other classes. I’d like to welcome you into our circle, but first, you need to pass a test. Level up to level 10, and you’ll be inducted into the Necromancer Guild.” He handed the wand to Xian.

Xian considered the wand’s benefits and decided to save money for a necromancer’s wand. He also had plans to purchase a weapon with ice damage.

“Um, can I buy a weapon with ice damage?” Xian asked.

“Why ice?” the vendor questioned, raising an eyebrow. “Curious choice, but I have a short sword with ice damage in the back. It’s excellent for freezing enemies.”

The vendor introduced himself, “By the way, how rude of me, I am Lux Von, a leader of the Necromancer Guild. Pleased to meet you!” He handed Xian the sword.

Xian purchased the sword for 112 gold coins and also bought two rations sufficient for a day for both himself and Merlin.

“Go to the Priestess of the Citadel of Light. May she guide you on your journey,” Lux advised. With that, Xian and Merlin made their way to the village center.

At the center, they encountered a priestess who appeared troubled despite the robes that covered her face. Merlin approached her and asked about her concerns.

“I apologize for my distress. I am Amara, the Priestess of the Citadel of Light. We need your help,” she said, her hands clasped together in earnest.

Xian reassured her, “I was sent by Lux. I’m here to help.”

“Finally, someone who listens,” Amara said, relieved. “This camp is in danger. An evil presence lurks in a nearby cave to the southeast. This entity is amassing troops to attack the camp. Defeat this evil, and you’ll be rewarded with a skill page. Will you accept this task?”

Eager for action, Xian responded immediately, “Yes, I accept!”

“Good! Safe travels and fight valiantly!” Amara encouraged him.

Xian, feeling a surge of excitement, declared, “I’ll set out now.”

With that, Xian and Merlin began their journey, the two of them leaving the camp amidst the curious gazes of other adventurers. They were aware of the significance of this task and the challenge it presented.

As they departed, a voice called out from a distance, “Good luck!” It was likely a guard stationed at the camp’s entrance, wishing them well on their mission.

Xian gripped his new wand in his left hand and the ice sword in his right. With Merlin by his side, they set off, prepared for the journey ahead and the battle that awaited them.

The two went to the south east side of the camp following the road laid for them. It was a gloomy road with wails of hair-rising sounds. To Merlin's surprise, Xian was nonchalant and did not even care. It was only in the auras of true veterans.
