Chapter 3: New Caretaker

Chapter 3: New Caretaker

Park Yongseo was just an ordinary student before meeting Bam Gibyeong. She studied at XXX University to be an actress and received her first debut at 17. Her quirk 'substitution' and natural skills in acting allowed her to make a name for herself in the industry despite her young age.

Yongseo and Gibyeong met when she was a freshman in high school. She was in the general education department while Gibyeong was in the business department. During her school days, the Bam family was famous for being one of the oldest families in the country - they existed alongside the church and other families during the era of the 'Blood Tyrant, and were said to be one of their subordinates. Despite their notorious reputation, the Bam family is famous for their innovations in quirk research and hero support technology development. They are also labeled as the family of geniuses as each member excels in their respective chosen fields, whether it's in medicine, research, engineering, or politics. It was as if there was a 'Bam' in every aspect of South Korea, but there were only three industries that the Bam family would never delve into; Heroes, Villains, and the Church.

Their fame was one of the reasons why Park Yongseo avoided Bam Gibyeong. Aside from the different worlds they live in, Yongseo believed that the rich are always haughty and arrogant and that Gibyeong wouldn't be any different. Her opinion against the rich strengthened when Bam Gibyeong himself asked her out publicly after seeing her perform on stage during their school festival. Just like any other cliche school love story, that encounter was the beginning of their countless interactions in the future.

During the first two years of high school, Yongseo learned that Gibyeong was like any other boy - only with an influential family name. According to him, it has been their family tradition to undergo homeschooling until 15 and integrate into society in high school. Because of this practice, each child learned how to master their strengths, overcome weaknesses, and value their family since childhood. It was then that Yongseo understood that Gibyeong was so much more than his family name. She slowly fell for the serious and stiff Bam Gibyeong and thought that perhaps the Bam family isn't so bad after all.

During the summer of their 2nd year in high school, Gibyeong asked Yongseo to be his girlfriend, to which she said yes. The first few months they started dating were pure bliss. They were still under the 'new relationship high' when Gibyeong needed to graduate ahead to begin his training in their family business, and Yongseo got scouted for her drama debut. Although it was only a minor role, Yongseo was elated, and Gibyeong gave her his full support without using his family name.

The two spent their time apart; Gibyeong was busy learning the ropes in their family business while Yongseo was slowly getting recognized as a talented actress. Because of Bam Gibyeong's reputation, they both decided to keep their relationship a secret until Yongseo decided otherwise to avoid rumors spreading about the two of them. It wasn't until they were close to their thirties did Yongseo suddenly announce that she and Bam Gibyeong, the current CEO of Sinchan Industries, were dating. This revelation brought South Korea into an uproar and left their supporters questioning how and when their relationship started.

When Yongseo announced this, Gibyeong was in a meeting and didn't know about the situation until later. If it were anyone else experiencing the same position, they would've been overwhelmed by the sudden change of their lives, but Bam Gibyeong wasn't anyone else. Although Gibyeong was late to be aware of the situation, the rest of the Bam family, especially his siblings, took care of their privacy. The Bam family's capability to keep things private was also one of the reasons why Yongseo was so bold in revealing their relationship without consulting Gibyeong - Yongseo had Gibyeong's siblings' support.

By the time they were finally together, Gibyeong wanted to reprimand Yongseo for her hasty decisions but halted when she saw how happy Yongseo was at the opportunity to be with him publicly. When everything settled down, Gibyeong and his siblings sat with Yongseo to discuss the Bam family's history with the Braeden's and their duty towards the remaining survivor of the notorious clan. Yongseo was surprised at first but eventually accepted it when they told her that their princess was the one who ended the Blood Tyrant's reign. Gibyeong also assured her that their princess waking up was highly unlikely.

They married two years later, and Yongseo gave birth to the twins a year later. Yongseo returned to her acting career after giving birth while taking care of her children. Gibyeong and Yongseo had a relatively happy relationship. Despite their busy schedules, they made time to bond and reaffirm their love while doting on their children. When Yongseo turned 45, she retired from her acting career and focused on raising the twins.

The family of four had a peaceful life. Yongseo enjoyed spending time with Gun-in and Jeonsa, as well as getting closer to her relatives. Despite being the breadwinner and his busy schedule, Gibyeong would still make time for his family, strengthening their relationship as a family.

But everything changed when their 'princess' woke up. Gibyeong, who would spend most of his time working in his office or a meeting, now cancels calls or gatherings and regularly visits the innermost house. Gun-in, who would obsessively work in his lab in his office, now locks himself in the innermost part of their mansion. Jeonsa, who prefers to laze around and spends time playing video games, now rarely comes home and would be exhausted beyond compare whenever she does.

When Gun-in started transferring his duties to his cousin Dae-Jung, it was the last straw for Yongseo. She would never have imagined that her family would make big decisions without consulting her. Yongseo decided to confront Gun-in one day and headed to his office, but when the door opened, she saw her injured son, and all the scolding she prepared went out the window.

Yongseo could never stay mad at her kids regardless of what they decide on doing; as long as they're healthy, everything else is secondary. Yongseo offered her help that day and cleaned her son's room. While cleaning, she found papers with beautiful handwriting repeating one word.

"Ambrosia?"

Yongseo picked up the stack of papers and examined them one by one. Such beautiful handwriting was nowhere like her children; they both prefer typing rather than writing. They looked like practice papers for kids with the word 'Ambrosia' written on top of each parchment. She could only guess that 'Ambrosia' was a name rather than an object. As far as Yongseo knew, there was no one named Ambrosia in their circle of friends. The only conclusion she could come up with was that Ambrosia is the name of their princess that her family was so busy attending.

"Is she that young to go through all these practice papers?"

Yongseo remembered how Gibyeong described her; she was just a child forced to save Korea from the clutches of her wretched father. Her father saw her as a walking blood bag, while her mother painted on her body and treated her like her personal walking canvas. Yongseo wanted to learn more about this mysterious princess, but it would be disrespectful for Gun-in if she were to snoop around his office. To compromise, Yongseo kept the paper with nothing but the princess' name on it and left the office after cleaning.

While she was on the way to her office, she met Bam Dae-Jung - her nephew and the person Gun-in appointed to take over his company.

"Ajumma, it's rare to see you here."

"Ah, Dae-Jung! It's been a while since I've seen you. How's your mother? Did she like the ginseng soup I sent her the other day?"

"Yes, she loved it. She was going to invite you to dinner this weekend, but with the upcoming monthly family dinner, she'll postpone it for next month."

"It's all right. I can always make time for dinner with your mother. Can I bring the twins with me?"

"My mother would love to invite including the Patriarch, Ajumma."

"That's a relief. I'll tell Gibyeong and the twins to make time for it."

"My mother would be happy. By the way, Ajumma, is Gun-in-nim in his office?"

"No, he just left. He was in a hurry about something, but I could take a message."

"Ahh, no. It's all right, Ajumma. Are you heading to the servant quarters?"

"Yes, Gun-in injured himself while inside, so I cleaned him up before he left."

"I see. Shall I take care of that for you, Ajumma?"

"It's all right. I can handle it myself."

"Please, let me. I couldn't allow the matriarch of our clan to step foot in the servant quarters. It would be no trouble at all."

"Hahaha, you're just as stiff as your father, Dae-Jung. That's not good, you know. How will you ever find girls at this rate? Or boys, don't worry about it if your father complains. We always have extra rooms in the house. It's too big for just the four of us anyways."

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

"Thank you, Ajumma. I'll keep that in mind."

With a smile, Yongseo gave Dae-Jung her stained gloves and lovingly patted his cheeks.

"It's only a pity that you would have to go around with an incomplete attire, Ajumma."

"Oh, this? Haha, don't worry about it. I was thinking of changing them anyway since I'm heading to the office."

Yongseo then theatrically raised her right hand and snapped her fingers, and just like that, her red dress turned into an elegant black pantsuit paired with a white turtleneck.

"See? Easy peasy."

"You look beautiful as always, Ajumma. It makes me wonder whether you're really in your 50s."

"Young man, you should know better than mention a woman's age."

Yongseo cracked a dangerous smile as she crossed her arms in front of her. Dae-Jung flinched upon seeing his aunt's smile that didn't reach her eyes and immediately bowed.

"Forgive me, Ajumma. It was an honest compliment. Your beauty is indeed eternal."

"Haha, it's good that you know. Now then, I won't hold you for too long. I know you're busy helping Gun-in with the company."

"Yes, thank you, Ajumma."

With a gentle smile, Yongseo patted the bowing Dae-Jung on the shoulder before heading towards her office. When the Bam family first treated her with so much respect, she was uncomfortable but soon got used to it as time passed. Yongseo understood that it was part of their tradition, and refusing it would be the same as rejecting their respect towards the patriarch's family.

Inside her office, Yongseo sat on her chair and pulled out the paper she took from Gun-in's office. She opened the folded parchment and laid it on her desk, intently looking at each stroke made to write the name 'Ambrosia.'

Whenever her family would talk about their princess, Yongseo always wondered how they could refer to her as someone from the legends. Despite her not being a religious person, she always thought that the one who ended the Blood Tyrant's reign was a saint from the church and not a child hidden away by her family.

With nothing much to lose, Yongseo opened her laptop and began searching for anything about Ambrosia Braeden but to no avail. She was frustrated at first but eventually understood why she couldn't find anything about their princess. Since even the church has no information regarding Ambrosia, she doubted she would either without alerting her family. If she wanted data about the remaining survivor of the Braeden family, she needed a Bam to look for it.

Determined to be a part of her family's open secrets, she took her phone from the desk drawer and dialed a number. After ringing thrice, the other line answered with an upbeat tone.

"Ajumma! It's rare for you to call me at this time. The dinner is still this weekend."

"Eun-Kyung, how are you? I'm calling for something different."

"I'm fine, Ajumma! Never better! I can never thank you enough for the recommendation you gave to Director Lee."

"You don't have to thank me; we're family. It's normal for me to at least put in a good word for you, plus, you amazed Director Lee all on your own."

"Still, thank you, Ajumma. So, what can I do for you?"

"I need a favor, and I would appreciate it if it were to stay between the two of us."

Yongseo heard some objects clattering on the other line before Eun-Kyung answered.

"Eun, are you all right?"

"Ahh, yes, Ajumma. I just had to fix something real quick. Anyway, is this something that not even Gun-in and Jeonsa can know about?"

"Yes, can you do it?"

"Of course! I'd do anything for you, Ajumma!"

"Hahaha, I knew I could count on you, Eun. Now, can you look for everything you know about Ambrosia Braeden?"

"About Gongju-nim?"

"Yes, about your Gongju."

"There should be some information about Gongju-nim in the Patriarch's library, though?"

"I-I knew that, but I've never visited the library for a long time. So, if I were to snoop around now, wouldn't it raise some suspicions?"

"Ahh! That's right. It would indeed be suspicious. Don't worry, Ajumma; I'll gather as much information as I can."

"Thank you, Eun-Kyung. I'll tell you something about Director Lee in exchange."

"Ahh! You don't have to, Ajumma! You've given me enough!"

"Aigoo, just listen, okay?"

"Y-yes. . ."

"Director Lee loves it when his crew is being taken care of; so, if you want to earn some points in his good side, you should invest in befriending everyone in the set. Do you understand me?"

"Yes, Ajumma! Thank you for the advice! I'll keep it in my heart at all times!"

"Hahaha, that's a relief to hear. Now, continue what you're doing. I know you're busy with the new projects that are lining up for you, so you don't have to prioritize my favor, okay? Good luck with your new movie. I can't wait to see it."

"Thank you, Ajumma! I'll continue to do my best! Take care and stay healthy, Ajumma!"

Yongseo ended the call with a warm smile painted across her lips. She's always loved the kids in the Bam family and admired the culture and traditions that they practice. One of the kids she treated as her daughter is Eun-Kyung, who was the child of Gibyeong's cousin on the father's side. Reminiscing about the childhood she bore witness, Yongseo became more determined to meet Ambrosia in hopes to re-live taking care of children. Despite all the mystery surrounding Ambrosia, Yongseo can't help but look forward to the time she'll finally see her family's precious princess.

Because of Eun-Kyung's busy schedule, it took her months to gather something substantial for Yongseo. After receiving the report and sending off the guilty-looking Bam Eun-Kyung, Yongseo was in her office reading the information when she heard a knock on the door. Startled by the sudden disturbance, she immediately hid the documents in a desk drawer and called for her unwelcome guest to enter.

"Gun-in? What brings you here? Why didn't you tell me that you were coming? I would have had Seo Ah prepare some tea. Come in and sit. I'll prepare some tea."

Being the obedient son he is, Gun-in sat on the sofa and waited for his mother to finish her preparations. When Yongseo brought the tea cart over, she poured themselves a cup of tea and sat beside her son.

"How have you been? It's been a while since you went out of the inner house."

Gun-in took awkwardly chuckled as he took a sip from his cup, unable to bring himself to look at his mother in the eye.

"I apologize, Omma. Things have been a little hectic lately, especially with the church becoming more aggressive by the day. Abuh-ji, Jeonsa, and I have to take care of most things for Gongju-nim."

"That's precisely why I told your father to let me in the inner house. I want to help you guys, but he keeps telling me that it isn't my responsibility."

"Well, that's kinda why I'm here, Omma."

"Hmm? What do you mean?"

"Because of our sudden busy schedules, I asked Abuh-ji to allow you to take care of Gongju-nim instead of Jeonsa. But just until she finishes the errands that Abuh-ji wants her to run! N-nothing permanent!"

Yongseo was taken aback by what her son had told her. If Gun-in is telling the truth, then it means that she was finally allowed to enter the inner house and meet the infamous 'Gongju-nim' that her family has hidden from her all these years.

Seeing that his mother is not saying anything, Gun-in was about to argue why he thought it was a good idea to bring his mother to the fold but wasn't able to when he saw her smile, the brightest one he's seen from her recently.

"Is there anything, in particular, I need to know before meeting her?"

Gun-in sighed in relief as he took another sip from his cup before handing his mother his phone from his inner suit pocket.

"Everything about the current Gongju-nim is there. She keeps to herself most of the time, so she rarely speaks up. She also loves learning and writing, and everything else about her is there. Will this weekend be all right with you to meet her, Omma?"

". . ."

"Omma?"

"Hmm?"

"Hahaha, are you that interested in Gongju-nim? She's adorable, isn't she?"

"Hmm? Ahh, yeah, she is. When can I meet her?"

"How about this weekend? I'll personally introduce you to her then since she doesn't have much planned for this weekend."

"I can't wait."

The week passed by in a flash, and just like that, Yongseo was going to meet Ambrosia. When her son picked her up from the main house, she was unusually nervous. She didn't even have the time to notice his son's hanbok while being led towards the inner mansion. Gun-in then led her to a room and told her to wear a simple yet elegant hanbok prepared for her. Exiting the room in a daze, her son led her to one of the house's drawing rooms and knelt in front of the panel door. Yongseo was surprised to hear Gun-in speak formally to anyone other than his father. Seeing another side of his son made her even more curious about what kind of person the princess is.

When she read the information given to her by Gun-in, Yongseo learned that Ambrosia still wasn't introduced to the new technologies that emerged during her slumber. It was why Gun-in would continue teaching her using books rather than the tablets he created. The difference between their lifestyles was a little unsettling for Yongseo, but this is what she wanted. Regardless of what kind of person Ambrosia is, she would need to accept her the way her family does.

Hearing a faint answer, Gun-in opened the door and lowered his upper body to a bow. Yongseo, on the other hand, was about to lower her head but couldn't when her gaze fell upon the girl sitting in the middle of the room. The girl sat in a seiza in front of a small table filled with writing materials. She held a thin brush with her right supported by her left while writing on parchment. Noticing the opened door, the girl gracefully rested her brush and looked up from the table, meeting Yongseo's widened brown eyes with her own curious mismatched eyes.

Yongseo was so lost in the girl's deep eyes that she forgot to pay her respects or hear her son's calls. It was when Gun-in tapped her hand only that she woke up from her daze and met her son's anxious and worried looks.

"Yes?"

"Omma, please greet Gongju-nim."

"Ahh! Yes! I greet Gongju-nim! My name is Bam Yongseo, and I will be Gongju-nim's new caretaker."

Gun-in immediately panicked at his mother's informal way of speaking. He had hoped that his princess would accept his mother as a replacement for Jeonsa but seeing how disrespectful her mother was, perhaps it's only his wishful thinking. Gun-in lowered his head once more, internally sighing and resigned to their fate of rejection. He only hopes now that his mother wouldn't take Gongju-nim's refusal so hard. She's been excited to meet her all this time, after all.

The silence that took over unsettled Yongseo even more. She had just realized how disrespectful she had been when she lowered her head. She was her family's princess, the Blood Tyrant's only daughter, and the Braeden's remaining survivor. It wouldn't be surprising for her to kick her out of the house right now. Anxiously waiting for Ambrosia's reply, Yongseo tightly closed her eyes and struggled to keep her trembling in check, hoping and wishing that their princess would let this one mistake slide.

". . . Mm."

That simple response surprised the mother and son that they both looked up from their bowed positions and saw the girl resuming her earlier activities.

"Gongju-nim?"

Gun-in was the first one to call out to his princess to clarify what she said. Hearing her questioning tone, Ambrosia looked up from the table once more and painted a small reassuring smile, and resumed writing.

Seeing that reassuring smile of their princess made the mother and son reveal their relieved smiles and enthusiastically bow once more.

"Thank you so much, Gongju-nim!"
