‘Getting to Know Home Super-Security Systems’
safehome.org, copyright 1999
Your home should be your sanctuary. It’s the place you return at the end of the day for comfort and safety. For most this involves having security systems installed to protect against common types of superpowers which could be used to access their home.
Understanding more about the different systems, their features and technology will help you make a wise choice when it comes time to purchase. This guide covers those home security products designed to specifically protect against powers (in addition to general home security systems and accessories, which you can find in our list here – give it a click!) It also shines a light on factors you may not have thought about (but which are important!). And of course, we break it down into clear language and easy‑reference sections. Enjoy!
DisruptancesTM
* Core Function – A clever device developed by the Department of Defence in the 1970s, it stops teleportation into your house. An absolute necessity and a legal requirement for many homeowners.
* How it works – Once plugged in, a Disruptance puts out an invisible energy field, similar to wi‑fi. The science behind how this field works is complex, but in practice as long as the Disruptance remains powered it will prevent teleporters appearing in the protected area.
* Key Features & Tech – Disruptances come in a variety of sizes, ranging from small and portable to bulky and able to cover a football field. When buying, you should have the measurements of your home ready so that you know which options are most suitable. Most states will require you to have a Disruptance installed and working (like smoke detectors), and although it’s possible to opt out it can be difficult to get home and contents insurance without one. Luckily, government rebates are available when purchasing Disruptances for most homes.
* Add-ons and Integrations – Many current Disruptance models will come with a backup battery and tell you on the box how long they’ll keep working in the event of a blackout. Most include optional anti‑phasing technology, which will prevent people walking through your walls. You can also integrate Disruptances into your home security ecosystem to get automatic alerts if anybody tries to teleport through one.
Entryway Speed-Limiters (“Clackers”)
* Core Function – Small moving rails which are installed on the inside of outer doors and windows. They prevent the entrance they are attached to being opened at superspeed.
* How it works – As a window or door moves, the rail of the Clacker (named for the quiet noise they make) moves along a series of notched teeth. If this movement is too fast, the mechanism locks firmly in place for a fraction of a second. A Clacker is not a substitute for a lock or for locking your doors and windows but is instead designed to stop anyone opening an unlocked door or window too fast for the people inside to react.
* Key Features & Tech – Many Clackers are targeted to homeowners who wants to avoid paying for professional installation. These DIY systems include easy‑to‑follow instructions and can be installed with screws or adhesive. The internal mechanism works on gears and springs and does not necessarily require power.
* Add-ons and Integrations – Higher‑tech Clacker sets come with a Bluetooth battery component, and can send an alarm signal if someone attempts to open them too fast. There are also models with entry sensors that can be temporarily turned off by swiping a fob, should you have a speedster in your family who wants to regularly go in or out. It’s highly recommended to place a Clacker on every outer entryway and on all opening windows.
One-way or Tinted Windows
Unauthorized use: this story is on Amazon without permission from the author. Report any sightings.
* Core Function – Glass made or treated to allow those inside to see out but those outside not to see in. Having this kind of glass in your windows protects against telepathic intrusion.
* How it works – A lot of the strength of an intrusive psychic connection comes from making eye contact. Having windows people outside cannot see through means telepaths outside your home will have a much harder time interacting with any minds inside.
* Key Features & Tech – N/A
* Add-ons and Integrations – For a premium, windows can be installed with antipathic lensing which reflects a telepath’s focus back onto them, causing uncomfortable feedback.
Smart Detectors
* Core Function – Fires or break-ins often happen when the homeowner is away, rendering the traditional smoke detector useless. But a smart smoke detector not only sounds the alarm, it also senses for abnormalities in the environment and can send real‑time alerts to your smartphone.
* How it works – The app-based device installs in just minutes with plug‑and‑play ease. Anytime you need to access, monitor, or control the detector, just open the app and everything, including the nature of the alert, is set out right there for you.
* Key Features & Tech – Smart detectors come equipped to detect for a range of changes to the local environment, including sudden spikes and drops in temperature, electrical pulses, seismic vibrations, ultra‑high light or sound, noxious gases and (obviously) smoke.
* Add-ons and Integrations – Most smart detectors offer seamless integration with third‑party platforms. More advanced models can also function as motion sensors, able to be turned on and off using a keypad or remote and sensing for movement on both the visible and invisible spectrums.
