Chapter 16 - Chameleon Shroud

Kang sat in a discreet corner of the cafe, his eyes hidden behind a pair of dark glasses, seemingly engrossed in a data pad. However, his true focus was elsewhere. He was a ranker known for his Analytical Gazer class, a rare ability that allowed him to perceive and analyze far more than the average person. Today, his attention was riveted on a conversation happening across the room.

His ability, 'Eavesdropper's Echo', let him overhear Tian and Aria's exchange with crystal clarity. The mention of rare items piqued his interest, and he subtly activated another skill, 'Insightful Vision', allowing him to view the items as though he was holding them himself. The Chameleon Scales, the Changeling Silk, the Shapeshifter’s Bone – each item was a treasure in its own right.

Kang's mind raced with possibilities. This was a big find, something that could fetch a high price in the right circles. He discreetly pulled out his communicator and contacted his usual buyer.

"I've got another find," Kang whispered into the device. "But this time, the price is triple my usual rate."

There was a moment of annoyed silence on the other end, followed by a begrudging intrigue. "Triple? It better be worth it, Kang."

Kang smiled thinly, his gaze still fixed on Tian and Aria. "Trust me, it's worth millions of credits more. These items are not your everyday finds. We're talking top-tier materials, the kind that can change the game for someone with the right skills."

The contact on the other end sighed, a sound that hinted at both irritation and anticipation. "Fine. Send me the details. But this better not be a wild goose chase, Kang."

Kang ended the call, his eyes still tracking Tian and Aria. He knew he had to move carefully; Tian was clearly no ordinary ranker, and Aria's connections and resources were not to be underestimated. But the potential rewards were too enticing to pass up.

As Tian and Aria wrapped up their meeting, Kang quietly stored away his data pad. He needed to plan his next steps meticulously. This opportunity was too good to risk with hasty actions.

Kang rose from his seat, blending into the cafe's crowd with practiced ease. His mind was abuzz with strategies and calculations.

Kang weaved through the crowded streets with practiced ease, his gaze locked on Tian's retreating figure. Clad in nondescript attire, he was just another face in the crowd, yet his eyes, hidden behind dark sunglasses, missed nothing. His Analytical Gazer class afforded him a heightened perception, turning each subtle movement of Tian into valuable information.

Tian, for his part, moved with a purpose, his mind occupied with plans to further his understanding of his new class. He slipped into a secluded alley, a well-chosen spot for privacy. His back turned to the world, he focused inward, summoning the energies required for his newfound abilities.

[Skill Activated: Golemancy Novice (F)]

A small golem, constructed from the debris and dirt of the alley, materialized before him. It was a crude figure, barely a foot tall, but it glowed with the vitality of newly channeled magic.

Tian's concentration was absolute as he mentally directed the golem. The tiny creature responded to his commands, its movements clumsy yet indicative of the potential within.

Kang, perched at a safe distance, observed this clandestine display through a digital lens. His data pad, concealed beneath his coat, captured every detail of Tian's actions.

Later that evening, inside of a dimly lit bar, sanctuary for the secretive and sly, where conversations buzzed beneath the veil of cigarette smoke and neon lights. Kang stepped in with an air of casual confidence, scanning the room behind his dark sunglasses. He spotted his contact, Rigel, secluded in the back, a man whose sharp gaze missed little.

"Rigel," Kang greeted, sliding into the booth with an air of nonchalance. Rigel, a man accustomed to the peculiarities of the underground world, merely raised an eyebrow in response.

"Kang, you always have a flair for the dramatic. What's the mystery today?" Rigel asked, a hint of amusement in his voice.

Kang leaned back, a playful smirk playing on his lips. "Oh, just a little something I stumbled upon. Something that could change the game."

Rigel's interest was evident, but he feigned impatience. "Cut to the chase, Kang. We don't have all night."

Kang chuckled, enjoying the buildup. "Alright, but where's the fun in that? Let's just say, I've found a way to be in two places at once. Or for someone to be someone else entirely."

Rigel leaned in, despite himself. "You're not usually one for riddles. What are you getting at?"

With a dramatic pause, Kang finally revealed, "A doppelganger item. Authentic and incredibly rare."

Rigel's demeanor shifted from amused to deeply intrigued. "A doppelganger item? You're sure it's genuine? Those are a rarity."

Kang nodded, his smirk widening. "As real as the drink in your hand. Think of the possibilities, Rigel. The chaos one could sow with such an item."

Rigel, now fully engaged, leaned forward. "That's a dangerous game, Kang. But I'm listening. What's your angle?"

Kang's eyes glinted behind his glasses. "I want a finder's fee. And given the item's rarity, it's going to be substantial."

Rigel let out a low chuckle, shaking his head. "You always drive a hard bargain. But if the item's as good as you say, it'll be worth it. Send me the details."

Kang stood up, ready to leave. "You'll have them soon. And Rigel, remember, this is our little secret."

Walking back through the city’s crowded streets, Tian kept a watchful eye on his surroundings. The streets were bustling with the usual urban chaos, offering no clues to confirm his suspicions. Yet, the feeling of unseen eyes lingered, a silent echo in the back of his mind.

Reaching his apartment, Tian locked the door behind him and paused, leaning against it momentarily. In the safety of his own space, he allowed himself to relax slightly, but the sensation of potential unseen threats persisted.

He glanced out of his window, surveying the cityscape below. The streets, a blend of light and shadow, seemed ordinary, yet Tian knew that appearances could be deceiving. If someone was indeed keeping tabs on him, they were well hidden within the urban labyrinth.

Turning away from the window, Tian focused on what was within his control. He unpacked the doppelganger items, examining them with a blend of intrigue and wariness. These items were crucial to his plans of moving undetected.

Tian embarked on a challenging endeavor: to craft a disguise from the extraordinary items Aria had provided. The Chameleon Scales, Changeling Silk, and Shapeshifter’s Bone lay before him, each pulsating with a distinct, enigmatic energy.

His initial attempts were fueled by a blend of anticipation and determination. Yet, the first few trials proved unfruitful. He attempted to combine the Chameleon Scales with the Changeling Silk, hoping to create a fabric that could change its appearance. However, the materials seemed to repel each other, refusing to merge.

Not one to be easily discouraged, Tian next tried to infuse the Shapeshifter’s Bone with the Chameleon Scales' essence. The result, however, was disappointing as the bone absorbed the essence only to shatter, unable to sustain the conflicting energies.

With each setback, Tian’s frustration mounted, but so did his understanding of the materials’ unique properties. He realized they needed a unifying catalyst to harmonize their energies. It was then he remembered the Greater Flame Wolf hide and the Salamander Heart. Known for its resilience and affinity with fire energies, the hide, coupled with the heart's potent fiery essence, seemed ideal to bridge the gap between the doppelganger items.

Tian meticulously began the crafting process, merging the hide with the Changeling Silk. To his relief, the materials started integrating, the silk adopting the hide's robustness while retaining its adaptive nature. Then, adding the Salamander Heart to the mix, the fiery essence acted as a bonding agent, melding the materials into a cohesive entity.

The final step was integrating the Chameleon Scales and Shapeshifter’s Bone. Under the influence of the Salamander Heart, they began to weave into the fabric, bestowing it with the ability to alter its texture and appearance.

After hours of laborious crafting, Tian held in his hands a remarkable creation—a cloak shimmering with iridescent colors, capable of changing its appearance. Light yet sturdy, it was the perfect amalgamation of the materials used.

He named this unique piece the Chameleon Shroud.
