CHAPTER 315
"Yes, Sir!" Eternal took the order and hung up the phone.
With the phone in his hand, Sebastian looked at Madeline. "We found out by whose instruction the driver was acting on. It's Isabel Taylor."
"Isabel…" Madeline mumbled the name, and a hatred that she had never felt before rose from the bottom of her heart.
Even though she had never hated anyone before, she hated Isabel at this moment.
She was supposed to be a young lady of the Wendel Family and live a wealthy life, but that life was taken away from her 20 years ago, and she had to live humbly with the Taylors. She never hated anyone from the Taylor Family no matter the kind of unfair treatment they were giving her. After all, she appreciated them for keeping her.
Even after the truth surfaced, she had never done anything to Isabel even though she had what it took to take revenge on her.
However, she now finally understood the feeling of hate. She was burning with rage to the point that she had the urge to just tear Isabel apart.
She looked up to the ceiling, trying to hold back the tears in her eyes while clenching her fists tightly. I'll never spare Isabel this time! I'll make her regret everything she has done and make her pay the price in the most painful way possible!
As the time passed, the door to the operation room was finally opened, and Luke was being pushed out
of the room.
Seeing that, Madeline ran over to him desperately and asked, "Doctor, how's my brother?"
"The operation was successful," the doctor said. "He'll recover soon if he gets enough rest."
She then asked anxiously, "Will there be any after effects?"
"Most probably no," the doctor stated. "We'll need to see how he recovers."
"Thank you. Thank you so much!" She thanked the doctor after the weight in her heart finally dissipated.
Luke was then pushed away by the nurse in the direction of the ICU, but Madeline could not go with him for now since she needed to wait for Leonard.
Leonard's operation had not ended yet.
The door to the operation room was closed once again. After taking a few deep breaths, Madeline took out her phone and called Logan.
The Adams’ home base was in Capitol, so Logan had already gone back to Capitol, leaving Luke here alone.
With Luke in such a dire state, she figured that Logan should know about this.
The phone only rang once before Logan had already picked it up. "Hello, Maddie."
"Logan…" Her voice cracked just from saying his name. "I'm sorry…"
On the other side of the phone, Logan sprang to his feet and asked anxiously, "Maddie, what's wrong? Are you crying?"
"Sorry, Logan. I'm so sorry…" She tried her best to hold back her tears and told him everything in her broken voice. "I'm sorry, Logan. I dragged Luke into this…"
"What are you sorry for? He's your brother. It's his duty to protect you. I'm just glad to know that all of you are fine!" With the phone in his hand, he left the office in a hurry. "Don't worry, Maddie. Wait there. I'm coming now."
He then dashed out of his office and instructed his bodyguard, "Prepare a plane. I'm flying to Dusktown in 10 minutes."
After giving a reply in acknowledgement, the bodyguard made a call and passed down the order at once.
Then, Logan took his phone and entered the elevator. His hands were sweating from the unease. "Maddie, are you safe now?" How he wished to have a pair of wings on his back so he could fly to Madeline's side right now.
"I'm fine." Madeline nodded. "Logan…" She choked out his name once again but spoke no further. She felt like she would start crying the instant she opened her mouth to speak again.
"It's okay. It's okay…" Logan comforted her. "Nothing else matters as long as you and Luke are still alive. Wait for me at a safe place. I'll be there soon."
She tried hard to hold back her tears and gave him a hum of acknowledgement. Afraid that she might start crying out loudly if she spoke further, she just hung up the phone in silence.
"Mommy, don't cry already…" Joel hugged her and told her with tears welling in his eyes, "I feel like crying when I see you cry…"
Hearing that, Madeline held back her tears and lowered her head to caress his cheek. "Okay. Mommy won't cry anymore. So, Joel don't cry…"
Just a moment ago, she was probably acting the same way as her children right now; she was on the verge of tears the moment she was on the phone with Logan, and it was just like how her children felt like crying when they saw her cry.
It was at this moment that she finally realized that, deep down in her heart, her family and the people she relied on were never her parents or her biological brothers. It was Logan and Luke all along.
She should not blame Cedric for having a stronger bond with Angie than her because her feelings for Logan and Luke were stronger than the Wendels as well.
"Logan…" Her voice cracked just from saying his name. "I'm sorry…" Copyright Nôv/el/Dra/ma.Org.
"You should sit down and rest. Quincy and Joel must be tired too." Sebastian asked Madeline to bring the three children to sit down on the long bench in the corridor.
After another hour, the door of the operation room was opened again.
Jenson walked out quickly, and Madeline stood up and approached him immediately.
"Mrs. Hart." Jenson bowed slightly to her.
However, she did not bother with his formality and asked anxiously, "How's Leonard?"
"The operation was a success," he said. "But his injuries are too serious. So, he's still in a critical stage…"
Hearing that, her hands and feet turned cold and her heart sank. "What do you mean?"
"We need to keep him under observation," he explained. "If he can get through this in 24 hours, he will survive. Or else…"
Madeline was left speechless as she looked at him.
What Jenson meant was that Leonard was hovering between life and death; he might survive, but also might not.
She felt awful as though a weight had dropped onto her heart, suffocating her.
Sebastian wrapped his arms around her neck to make her feel better instead of comforting her with words. He knew any words would be meaningless now since the truth was put right in front of them.
Madeline would only relieve herself from this torrent of emotions of pain and guilt when Leonard was
safe.
He then ordered Jenson, "Try your very best to save Leonard no matter what it takes."
"Yes, sir!" Jenson nodded.
After half an hour, Leonard was pushed into the ICU.
Then, Sebastian said, "Maddie, there's nothing you can do even if you stay here. Let's bring the children home together. Their bodies can't take it if they keep staying in the hospital."
Madeline knew that what he said was true, so she nodded without any protest and left the hospital with Sebastian and the children.
On the way back, she hugged Quincy and Joel tightly in her arms but did not say a word.
She never had such a heavy heart before. Even when she was hit, bullied, wronged, or facing death threats, she had never felt as hopeless and in despair as today.
A life was in danger, and it might be lost at any moment because of her. That would be a weight that she could never bear.
Isabel Taylor! I'll never forgive you! I'll let you pay the price in the most painful way! I swear to God!
