Towards a new future - Seize the future

----------------------------------------

Pacing around the room was growing unbearable. Darek waited for his test to see his role in the I-S SF. Daren, a dragon and his roommate had gone in about 30 minutes ago. Tests were on average 25 minutes, but Daren was a dragon, so the delay was understandable.

The door flew open, "Hell yeah!" It was Daren.

"You're a liability?" Darek teased.

Daren gave an eyeroll, "No."

"Congrats," Darek walked towards the door.

"Good luck."

"I won't need it," The door shut, “Hopefully.”

It was one of those moments where you walk through a door and completely forget what you were doing. Luckily for Darek, things were clearly labeled and there were recorded instructions.

"Welcome to the I-S SF training and recruitment center, please enter the area labeled initial system.”

Footsteps echoing with apprehension, Darek walked toward the entrance labeled: Initial System

He took a step forward. A step towards a new future.

Everything went black for a moment.

“It’s getting worse and worse, Mr. Bunny,” She didn’t even know what she was talking about, like a stuffed animal would know.

The surveillance? She’d spotted 7 new cameras on the way back from work.

The economy? A loaf of bread cost more than ever.

The empire? It’d been on the decline for hundreds of years now. Since the death of god.

The emperor? There was always something wrong with him, but it had only gotten worse since the I-S SF took Earth.

The yearning? That was probably it. She yearned for freedom. For her own future.

Too often, things just happened to her, and she couldn’t do anything about it. It wasn’t her fault she was born in a failing empire, that she was spied on every day, that she was born into a lower class family, that her parents died.

She couldn’t do anything and she couldn’t stand that anymore. She opened the door, and took a huge breath.

Cough, cough

The smog was thick, she could just make out the silhouette of her hand.

She knew her way to the docks; she worked there, after all.

There was a red light glowing through the smog, “Name, occupation and reason for entering the docks.”

“Isabelle, repairwoman, left my tools at the dock, you know how people can get.”

“Checks out.” The light flickered green and gates creaked open.

“Thank you.” All records of her entrance would be erased, she’d made a deal with the doorman, he’d help her escape, and she’d come back with the I-S SF to liberate them from this hell.

“I’ll see you again, Jackson.”

She took a step forward. A step towards freedom. Today, she would seize the future and make it her own.

She grabbed a crowbar, she snuck onto the first starship she saw. She was a stowaway.
