CHAPTER THREE

The three made their way upstairs to the fourth floor. They entered the classroom, with maps along the wall. Over the next few minutes, students entered the class and took their seats. After all the students had arrived, Professor Hayes entered. A middle aged man with a full head of hair and slight stubble. He was very cheerful and passionate about his work. He was easily the most intelligent man when it came to the history of the magic world. After everyone was seated, he started the class.

"Ok class. Today, we are going to talk about an important battle that happened," He said. "The Battle Of The Ice Caps," He continued.

He went on to talk about the battle. Before he could get into detail, he stopped at the sound of a disrupting student.

"Excuse me. Is there something you'd like to share?" Professor Hayes said.

"Pffft, yeah actually. Why are we in this stupid class? Nobody wants to learn about history, we want to learn magic," The student said.

"It's important to learn what magic has caused, and how evil some people can be, so that we don’t repeat ourselves in the future," Professor Hayes said.

"Why should we even listen to you? You can't even do magic, how did you get a job at this school?" The disrupting student said.

The student stood up and went to walk out of the door. Professor Hayes threw his hand forward and the classroom door slammed shut. The student stepped back and looked over at Professor Hayes. He then held his hand out, and a ball of fire formed. It left his hand and hit the one unlit torch on the wall, lighting it. All the students looked around at each other in disbelief.

"Just because I don't teach magic, doesn't mean I can't perform it. I can perform it just as much as any other professor here. I used to attend this school. Now please, may I go on with the lesson?" Professor Hayes said.

The student looked at the door, then at the torch and back at Professor Hayes and then apologized and sat down. Professor Hayes smiled and nodded.

"Now, The Battle Of The Ice Caps was the first battle during the Fifth Mystic War. It was started by a man named Novius Vesper. He is a legendary dark mystic turned warlord. He was expelled from this school very quickly. He didn’t even attend this school for a whole year, and after that, he started his own underground school. He taught outcasts magic used specifically to kill. None of them had any emotion. In the battle, he destroyed every Mystic in front of him," Professor Hayes explained.

"So, he won?" Maddie asked.

"That battle, yes he did. But there was one other battle that caused him to lose the war, which we will talk about another day," Professor Hayes said.

He continued to explain the details of the battle and once he was finished, he instructed the students to open their books. He assigned them to read through Chapter twenty two which explained all about the battle. It took place at the Ice Caps, which was a frozen lake. The group that fought against Novius Vesper, was an army of students from Stormyrose led by former headmaster Artemis Calyx. It lasted three weeks, and Novius Vesper came out on top, and almost killed Artermis, who was an old man at the time, and not as powerful as he was in his youth. He stepped down from headmaster at the end of that year, and exiled himself. Only coming out of exile five years later to help win the war and take the role of headmaster again until his death, which occurred ten years after his return, and that was only a few years ago, as I’m sure most of you remember. Everyone nodded, as they remembered Professor Calyx’s death and attended the funeral when they were only eight years old.

The bell rang and class was over. After the students had left, Cyrus pulled up a chair next to Professor Hayes.

“Professor, do you know anything about the hourglass? We are assigned to find it,” Cyrus said.

“Yes I heard that. Professor Whitlock chose the perfect group. What do you have so far?” Professor Hayes asked..

“The only thing that we have is whoever took it, must’ve been someone that was already here,” Cyrus said.

“Yes, and whoever stole this hourglass Cyrus is very powerful. No random person can steal the hourglass, they wouldn’t get very far. Professor Whitlock put a spell over it, the further it gets from the school the heavier it becomes until eventually, not even magic can lift it. That’s what has been done with the hourglass since it was created. So whoever took it, knew how to undo the spell,” Professor Hayes said.

“That strengthens the possible professor theory,” Cyrus said.

“Yes Cyrus, this is all very strange. But I’ll tell you one thing. We need to find that hourglass fast, before whoever took it, learns it’s true power,” Professor Hayes said.

“What can it do?” Cyrus asked.

“Bad things. Things that we don’t even want to discuss. We just need to find it,” Professor Hayes said.

“If you hear anything, tell me,” Cyrus said.

After leaving his class, Maddie and Henry went back to the library to study, while Cyrus returned to Professor Armis's class. He knocked on the door and walked in. Professor Armis was sitting at his desk doing paperwork.

If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

"Ah Cyrus. What can I do for you?" He asked.

"Sorry to bother you Professor. But I have a question for you," Cyrus said.

"No bother at all. Let me hear it," Professor Armis said.

"So, I know conjuration can be used to release a door that has been sealed with conjuration with the Unbound Release. But, what about a Conjured lock? I've never tried that before as I've never come across one," Cyrus said.

"Hmm. Where is this coming from Cyrus?" Professor Armis asked.

"I'm trying to find any hints about the hourglass, and I've come across a bound lock. I need to get rid of it," Cyrus said.

"I've come across quite a few. It is possible, but you need immense strength behind the spell to release the lock. Make sure you focus on the connection between your spell, and the bound lock. Don't focus on the strength, just focus on the connection. The strength will come naturally," Professor Armis said.

Cyrus thanked Professor Armis and stood up to leave.

“Cyrus. Be careful,” Professor Armis said.

“I will,’ Cyrus replied.

Cyrus walked to the library. He walked inside the quiet room, and saw his friends sitting at a table reading textbooks.

"You guys ready?" He said.

They both stood up and together, the three of them walked downstairs to the Hall Of Magic History. Cyrus moved the shelf away from the door and they entered the corridor. They walked down to the sewer systems and made their way to that door. The bound lock was still on the door. Cyrus held his hand out and a small purple energy formed in his hand. He focused on the connection between the spell and the lock. Soltease. He said. He held his hand out and the purple energy left his hand and connected to the bound lock, eviscerating it. He turned the door knob and the door opened. Maddie and Henry looked at him.

"What was that?" Henry asked.

"It's a spell called Unbound Release. When it's used, it releases all conjured items, like conjured weapons, or anything sealed with conjuration, like doors. I wasn't sure if it was going to work on this lock as it's advanced, but it did," Cyrus explained.

They entered the room. It was a big room, similar to The Hole, where Combat Training took place. It was a dark room. They found a torch on the wall and lit it. Cyrus took the lead and made his way through the room. They found a few more torches and Cyrus used his lit torch to light them. The room was now lit enough for them to see. They spread out and Cyrus saw something. He noticed the wall looked a little different. As he got closer, he saw three maps on the wall. One was a map leading to the sewers, another was a map of the sewers, and the other one was a map of the school. There were lines drawn with a marker to mark paths that led to the Hall Of Magic History. As he was looking at it, he heard something behind him. He looked slightly behind him and saw someone behind Maddie. He quickly grabbed a small knife and threw it, hitting the man in the leg. Another man came up behind Cyrus. The man grabbed Cyrus who was easily able to get the man off of him. Another man tried to hit Cyrus with a sword. Cyrus stepped to the side and tackled the man. He punched the man a few times until he was unconscious. He saw Henry and Maddie fighting a few more of the men. Cyrus ran over to a man who was behind Henry, attempting to attack. Cyrus kicked the man in the back of the knees, causing him to drop to his knees, and Cyrus hit him in the back of the head, quickly knocking him unconscious. Maddie was able to evade a man attacking her and kicked him, making him hit the ground. Another man attacked Henry, who blocked the man's punch and Henry hit him in the gut, and then uppercutted him. Cyrus threw a fireball at one of the men, which caused them to disperse, allowing Maddie and Henry to attack the ones who were alone, while Cyrus took on the ones who stayed as a group of three. Cyrus ran towards them. Two of them ran towards Cyrus. Cyrus hit the ground and slid between two of the men and got to the one standing alone. Cyrus blocked the man's punch and placed his open palm on the man's chest. A blast of air left Cyrus's palm and the man flew back, hitting the wall hard. Cyrus quickly turned around, and saw the other two running towards him with knives drawn. Cyrus kicked one in the leg and threw him back as he stepped to the side causing the man to hit the ground behind Cyrus. Cyrus dodged the attack by the other man by moving underneath the man's arm and getting behind him, kicking him in the back. The three were eventually outnumbered by the men who cornered the three of them.

“Don’t kill them. We need to know if they know anything," One of them said.

They grabbed the three of them and lined them up. One of them grabbed Maddie who tried to fight back. One of the men punched Maddie and she hit the ground. Cyrus felt himself get angry. The man kicked Maddie while she was trying to get up. Henry tried to break free but was then hit himself. Cyrus started shaking in anger and possibly fear. He fell to his knees and felt his body heat up. Everything started to get bright. His eyes darted up, and the previously dark room, only lit by a few torches, was now bright like the room was being lit up by the sunlight. All the men looked at him. He stared at them with a cold, deadly and intimidating look. Almost as if he was looking through them. A yellow glow was surrounding Cyrus and a bright flash came from him. Most of the men fell to the ground and covered their eyes. A few of the men who had had their backs turned, were not affected by the flash but turned around to see what was going on. One of the men tried to throw a knife at Cyrus, but he ran, much quicker than any human. It almost looked like he teleported due to his speed. He ran to one of the men on the other side of the room, near the entrance. The man tried to swing his small knife at Cyrus who ducked, punched the man and then kicked him against the wall, knocking him out. One of the men was charging at Cyrus with his sword, attempting to impale him. Cyrus leaned to the side, causing the man to miss. He kicked the man in the knee and slammed his hand into the man's abdomen. A blast of air left Cyrus’s hand and lifted the man up and threw him against a large pipe near the ceiling. Another man got close to hitting Cyrus, but as he swung his sword, Cyrus jumped up and backflipped away from the attack in the air, landing against the wall. He pushed himself off of the wall and the speed at which he did allowed him to almost fly at one of the men and kick him. The man hit the wall, causing the wall to crack slightly due to the strength of the kick. There was only one guy left. Cyrus turned around and glared at him. The man was frozen in fear, but he had to fight so he gathered himself and attempted to attack Cyrus. Cyrus stepped to the right and wrapped his arm around the man’s right arm, which was the arm holding the knife. Cyrus threw his right shoulder into the man's chest. The man let go of the knife and stumbled back, Cyrus finished it with a kick to the chest and sent the man into the wall, knocking him unconscious. He looked over at Maddie and Henry. He helped them up and they left the room, leaving some of the men unconscious and the others were still blinded by the flash. They ran through the sewers, with Cyrus being able to see clearly he led the way with no problem. They made it back into the school and without saying a word, Cyrus ran to the first bathroom that he saw. He grabbed onto the sink and was taking deep breaths, trying to catch his breath. He looked up at the mirror and saw his eyes. He saw his eyes were a bright yellow color.. The yellow began to fade, and his eyes returned to their normal color. His body also cooled down and he began to feel tired. He took a minute to catch his breath once more, feeling confused and even a bit scared. Cyrus could fight, but not like that. It almost felt like he had no control of what he was doing. It just happened.
