Chapter 6: Poisoning

Chapter 6: Poisoning

Late at night, Mother Cockroach returned once again, making three round trips overnight and dragging away three cockroach corpses.

Meanwhile, Spotty continued to eat tirelessly for a day and a night, consuming an entire adult cockroach. Unfortunately, the residual force in the corpses dissipated, losing its ability to enhance cell activity.

The good news was that the corpses had no wounds, and the cool, dry autumn weather meant they could be preserved for quite some time. For now, there was no need to worry about a lack of meat.

Five days later, Spotty completed its fifth molt, reaching the sixth instar. As a male, it had a slender body, with more developed wings compared to females of the same age. Perhaps due to recent good nutrition and the effects of minor genetic modifications, its body length reached 4, equivalent to a seventh instar female cockroach.

However, there was only one cockroach corpse left in reserve; the others had all been dragged away by Mother Cockroach. Without meat, relying solely on plant-based food would double the time needed for each instar's growth, taking about 10 days. That meant it would take another 40 days or so to reach the tenth instar nymph stage.

It was already deep autumn, and with just plant-based nutrition intake, would there be enough time?

Spotty wasn't sure and didn't want to risk it.

Ordinary cockroaches had zero combat effectiveness and lacked hunting ability. How could they compete for food with the adult cockroaches?

Spotty thought of two solutions:

The first was to climb up the raspberry bushes during the absence of the red roach warriors, steal a raspberry, and attract nearby adult cockroaches to feast on it, poisoning them.

The power of a whole raspberry fruit, combined with the domino effect, should be enough to kill tens of thousands of adult cockroaches.

The second solution was to relocate, wandering into the mountains and scavenging for corpses of insects that couldn't withstand the cold of autumn nights.

The first method was safe and efficient, and could further enhance cell activity through the use of the force fruit. However, mass poisoning of one's own kind was too cruel and morally questionable.

The second method had certain risks. Roaming around at night, Spotty might fall prey to snakes or rodents, and taking risks didn't guarantee success.

After much deliberation, Spotty ultimately chose the first method: they were all creatures of low intelligence with powerful reproductive abilities, and millions of them might inhabit the entire mountain range. Poisoning tens of thousands of them was just a drop in the ocean; there would be new cockroaches nearby overnight.

Preparation was needed before action. Spotty dug into the ground, digging deep into the underground, opening a storage cellar in the nest.

Late at night, Mother Cockroach ran over and wandered around the nest, finding that the cockroach corpses from last time had all been eaten. Seeing Spotty digging, she thought there were still some underground and eagerly helped move the soil out of the nest.

With one more adult cockroach as an assistant, Spotty didn't stop it but dug even harder, trying to make the cellar as large as possible.

Until dawn, Mother Cockroach didn't find any cockroach corpses, and Spotty sent calming signals to her, continuing with the preparations.

At noon, Spotty went out to collect dry leaf fragments, laying them in the cellar until evening.

Quietly waiting.

When the sun set, the red roach tribe warriors spread their wings as usual, flew into the jungle to hunt for food.

Spotty immediately set off for the raspberry bushes.

Over the past few days, the raspberries had ripened one after another. The red roach warriors didn't know how to effectively use the force fruit to enhance their strength, so they could only digest two at most each day. Now, the raspberry bushes were full of ripe, red berries, far more than they could eat.

Spotty had already targeted one fully ripe raspberry, quickly climbed up the tree, grabbed the berry, and pushed it off the branch with its hind legs.

Being fully ripe, the fruit fell off easily and landed on the ground.

Spotty flapped its wings, hovered, and landed on the ground, then used its front legs and mid-legs to hold onto the branch tightly while pushing the raspberry off.

The ripe fruit, on the verge of natural shedding, was easily knocked off and fell to the ground.

Spotty flapped its wings, circled down, and landed on the ground, quickly pricking a hole in the fruit with the tips of its front legs.

With premeditated action, everything went smoothly. After finishing, Spotty quickly left.

The unique aroma of the force fruit immediately permeated the air, tempting almost all living creatures with its fatal allure.

Several adult cockroaches waiting to feast on the raspberry bush were attracted and rushed over, crazily gnawing at the fruit.

As the fruit skin was bitten open, the special fruity aroma in the air became even stronger. More adult cockroaches were attracted and swarmed in to feast.

The first few cockroaches to feast on the fruit died on the spot, their bodies devoured by other cockroaches.

Chaos ensued.

Soon, the fruit was consumed, leaving behind a large number of corpses.

More cockroaches, unaware of the situation, rushed forward to join the feast.

Word spread, and soon, "poison" spread in such a simple manner.

"Danger, danger..."

Spotty desperately blocked Mother Cockroach, who wanted to join the feast, continuously sending danger signals and finally managed to calm her down after much effort.

At this moment, corpses lay in piles around the raspberry bushes.

"Move, move, move..."

Spotty continued to convey messages to Mother Cockroach, starting to work on moving the bodies and dragging them into the nest, into the storage cellar.

Mother Cockroach finally understood Spotty's intentions, excitedly shaking her antennae and helping to move the corpses.

When the red roach tribe warriors returned from hunting, they were stunned to see corpses everywhere. Without suspecting anything or feeling angry, they only felt deep regret. They thought that the ripe raspberries had naturally fallen, attracting ignorant members of their tribe to feast, resulting in the tragedy before them.

Hastily digging a large pit under the raspberry bushes, they gathered and buried the corpses, then brought stones to suppress them.

Worried about a similar tragedy happening again, they immediately picked off all the ripe raspberries, buried them under the trees, and buried them in the ground.

Once picked, the force fruit would gradually dissipate if not stored properly, losing its effect.

"What a waste!"

Spotty muttered, feeling sorry as they watched.

At the same time, they were full of anticipation for the future: it seemed that this planet was very conducive to the birth of force plants. After becoming a force creature, they shouldn't lack resources.

Lying on the dry branches, Spotty quietly enjoyed the faint force emitted from the corpses below, undergoing subtle changes in their body.

They only excavated the corpses the next night, beginning to feast.

With molting growth combined with continuous enhancement of cell activity, Spotty's brain could now support continuous thinking about several complex problems.

The only regret was that Mother Cockroach's condition showed no signs of improvement.
