Epilogue: Chapter 2

His tour of the Old Ghost had left Taz feeling like a stranger in his own home but the sight of the multimission bay left him dumbstruck. Instead of a utilitarian hold filled with cargo containers or racks of starfighters, he found a luxurious ballroom straight out of a holodrama. The ceiling was lost in an umbra that replicated space complete with a slow-moving starfield, planets and comets. Opulent streamers bedighted the walls, catching the light from crystal torches and scattering it in a thousand hues. Blue fog swirled along the floor with a subtle glow. Illuminated fountains and soaring, twisted columns filled the space. A twenty-piece string choir filled the air with lighthearted Filvian music.

Reiko entered the ballroom from a side door and walked toward Taz, wobbling on glossy black stiletto-heeled ankle boots. Her cream-colored gown had delicate lace sleeves. Its flared skirt was playfully short in front and brushed the floor behind her. The engineer's jet-black hair curled into a fashionable upswept style held fast with a golden, jeweled tiara comb. At her throat was a lace choker that matched her gown. A scintillating fire opal the size of Taz's thumb hung at the soft cleft between her delicate collarbones.

Taz offered a bright smile and an appreciative lift of his eyebrows. "You look fantastic, Rei-grasha."

Rei giggled and blushed. "You too, Taz." She took a tall flute of golden sparkling wine from Athenia's drink tray as the droid passed by before gliding gracefully toward the other guests.

"Where's Sera?"

"She said she wanted to surprise me so I haven't seen her yet." She took a sip from her glass. "I'm kind of nervous, honestly." She glanced down at her gown. "I hope she likes it."

"Oh, I don't think you have anything to worry about to judge by the stares you're getting," Taz said, glancing around the room.

"Really?"

"Absolutely." A knot of important-looking men and women, all elegantly dressed, had just entered. Taz picked out Avery Rexler, looking smart in his black dress uniform. The cuffs of his tunic and the side seam of his trousers both had slate blue satin stripes. Walking beside him arm in arm was Dianthe Numarkos, resplendent in a champagne-colored gown covered with sparkling gemstones and a short matching jacket. She spoke with the other guests, looking like a member of the aristocracy much more than a business magnate and former Rebel cell leader.

A grin split Taz's face. "Turn around, Rei."

Sera walked next to Dee Numarkos. She wore a sleeveless black leather tunic over a saffron bodysuit and tall black boots that rose above her knees. Hammered gold cuffs decorated her toned biceps and wrists. A row of toggles made of nexu fangs rose diagonally from her waist toward her shoulder. The top few were left unfastened, forming lapels and a plunging neckline. Tucked into the vibrant indigo silk sash at her waist was an ivory-hilted dagger in a jeweled scabbard. A pair of smaller knives poked out of each boot-top. Her black leather choker held a big fire opal that was the twin of Reiko's. She must have spent the morning under a follicular macula because Sera's short hair had transformed into a thick fiery braid that swept over her shoulder. Her green eyes sparkled in the hall's lights.

Reiko gasped, nearly falling against Taz.

"Surprised?" he asked.

"Doesn't she look just like a pirate prince?" gushed the engineer.

"She does indeed!" Taz laughed at Reiko's stunned reaction, but he was nearly as awestruck. Sera managed to pull off a look that was strikingly powerful and seductive all at the same time.

"I want her to ravish me!" Rei announced without a trace of self-consciousness and drained her wine flute.

The corners of his eyes crinkled merrily. "Easy there, Miss Hudson. The evening's young."

She looked at him with ardent desire in her brown eyes. "I've never seen her so gorgeous and dashing!"

"Your pirate prince will be looking for her consort, I imagine. May I escort you?" Taz made an exaggerated bow.

Reiko nodded eagerly. She took his arm and they walked toward the party across the open bay. Sera's eyes lit up when she saw them. She kept her steady pace with the others but her smile dazzled. Rei let go of Taz's arm and rushed to Sera, who caught her before she had a chance to fall in her unfamiliar shoes. They whirled and laughed, and greeted each other with enthusiastic kisses.

Taz grinned at the two lovers for a moment. He was about to go greet the generals when Varun and Tess walked through the door. He was dressed much as Taz, but with a white shirt and jet black tunic and pants. Tess walked hand in hand with him, looking radiant in a slim black satin gown. Taz took a moment to admire the curve of her hips and her pale, bared shoulder.

Laetia approached Tess and Varun bearing her drink tray. "Good evening, Captain Daro, Captain Numarkos. Is it true that you found your parents, Captain Daro?"

"I did indeed, Laetia," said Tess, accepting a glass of wine. Varun took a scarlet-colored drink in a thin cylindrical glass.

"Well that's marvelous!" exclaimed the droid. "I would very much like to meet them one day, if I could."

Tess laughed. "I'll see if we can arrange that sometime."

"Oh, thank you, Captain. Now please excuse me. I mustn't neglect the other guests." She gave them both a little bow and hurried away, her hips swishing in the provocative way that made her series so popular.

They touched their glasses together and drank. "Aunt Dee must have learned a thing or two from Aristotle Karanos," Varun said, gesturing at the hangar's transformation with his glass.

"She sure knows how to put on a show," Tess agreed. They walked toward Taz, who smiled a greeting as they approached.

"Tess, you look... amazing." Taz felt awkward saying so with Varun standing there, but he took her hand and kissed it anyway. He didn't miss the slim, dark lustrous band on her finger. A delicate spiral setting clasped a lozenge-shaped rainbow sapphire. As he held her hand the gem's interior gleamed and sparkled with every color in the spectrum, changing in a hypnotic pattern that held his attention for a few distracting moments. He'd heard of the mesmeric gems, but he'd never seen one. They were hard to come by and insanely expensive, more so for the solid band of black diamond that encircled Tess's finger.

Taz looked at her, then at Varun. In spite of the sudden ache in his heart and the knot in his stomach, he smiled and extended his hand. The other man clasped it firmly. "Congratulations, you two."

Tess gave him a probing look. "Are you alright?"

"Of course," he answered, only lying a little. "I'm happy for you, truly."

"Thank you, Taz. That means a lot to us both." She gave him a kiss that lingered for a moment.

"I, um, feel out of place at affairs like this," he stammered, trying to cover his surprise. Her lips were just as soft and warm as he remembered.

Varun looked over his shoulder toward the doors through which they'd come. There was a small commotion that made him grin. "I think your evening's about to get more enjoyable."

Lyra stood framed in the doorway, lit by the warm lights that had been skillfully placed to show off each guest at their arrival. She wore a luxurious gown of deep emerald satin with a bodice covered in lacy embroidery. Her smooth, creamy brown shoulders were bare, and her legs showed through a slit in the full skirt as she walked. She wore wedge-heeled sandals with cross-ties over her shapely calves in a shade of copper that perfectly matched her striking eyes.

Taz's breath caught in his chest. "Wow."

Reiko hurried to Lyra, threw her arms around her neck, and pulled her toward Sera. They exchanged greetings, then Rei took the two women's hands and insisted on introducing the pilot to all of her Filvian friends. Lyra looked nervously around the room but she let herself be led away by the enthusiastic engineer.

"So," Varun whispered to Tess, leaning in close. "That was some kiss. Do I need to worry?"

Tess laughed lightly. "You tell me." She lifted her chin toward Taz. "He hasn't taken his eyes off Lyra since she came in."

"I can see why," Varun admitted, watching Lyra move among the Old Ghost's crew.

Tess dug her elbow into his ribs but smiled at him and kissed his cheek. "She looks gorgeous."

"Almost as gorgeous as you."

"Flatterer," she accused, hugging his arm. She looked at Taz, who was still transfixed. "Lyra would probably appreciate having her copilot by her side, don't you think, Taz?"

"Huh?" he grunted, then blinked. "Oh, yeah, good idea," he followed with an awkward grin.

"Don't let us hold you back," Varun added.

Taz covered the distance with quick strides, slowing as he approached so he didn't look too desperate. It took deliberate effort to calm his breathing. He couldn't repress a huge smile when she saw him, and his heart skipped when she gave him a demure one in return.

Before he could say anything, Reiko piped up, "Isn't Lyra beautiful, sir?"

"Yes, she is," he responded, locking his eyes on hers. He felt the heat rise in his cheeks and his heart go into overdrive. Up close she looked even more alluring.

Uncharacteristically, Lyra looked away, her face as flushed as his. "Stop staring at me, Oktos." She hesitated a moment, then held out her hand.

Taz kissed it with trembling lips. He extended his arm and tried not to look as flummoxed as he felt. "It'd be my honor to escort you tonight, Lyra."

When she'd seen the gown waiting for her in her cabin, she'd figured that everyone would be formally dressed. But seeing Taz at his sartorial best in a perfectly tailored suit, gazing at her with those pale blue eyes full of desire, left her entirely speechless.

From behind her Sera suggested, "Every pilot needs a wingmate, doesn't she?"

Lyra made a diffident nod and slipped her arm around his. She turned to Rei and Sera. "Thanks for introducing me to your shipmates."

"Have a good time, Lyra, Doc," Sera smiled with a wave and a wink. She put her arm around Reiko's waist and guided her toward a group of Ballista commandos wearing all-black dress uniforms with their distinctive dark red satin stripes.

"Nervous?" Taz asked when they were alone. He lifted his hand and Demetra hurried toward them.

"Of course not," she lied with a reticent smile, clutching his arm.

"I'm out of my depth," he admitted. Her perfume drifted in the small space between them. Taz tried not to betray how much he adored her scent while he breathed it in. "Lyra, this is Demetra. Demetra, this is Lyra Nimor, the pilot of Allegra's Heart."

The droid executed a perfect curtsey while balancing her tray of drinks. "It's my pleasure to make your acquaintance, Miss Nimor."

"Likewise," Lyra responded with her usual reserve.

"Allow me to compliment you on your beautiful gown. It is most becoming! Might I offer you a refreshment?"

Lyra looked from Demetra to Taz and back. "Sure. What do you recommend?"

The droid plucked a flower-shaped glass from the tray. Interleaved golden petals formed the bowl, with green and blue leaves running up the slender stem. "I hope this is to your liking, Miss Nimor."

Lyra took a drink. As soon as her lips touched the clear liquid it turned pale pink. The taste was cool, refreshing, and appropriately floral. "Sakoola blossom honey wine," she said, amazed and wide-eyed. "How did you know?"

Demetra wagged her finger. "A hostess never reveals her secrets, Miss Nimor." She picked up a square tumbler of cut crystal. The dark amber liquor swirled with golden currents. "Aurobon whiskey for the gentleman, isn't that right, Mr. Oktos-nagrasha?"

"It is, thank you, Demetra."

"It's truly my pleasure. Now you must excuse me, there are other guests to be served. It's delightful to meet you, Miss Nimor. I do hope you both enjoy the evening!" She nodded a less formal bow and hurried off.

Lyra took another sip. The drink turned a rich purple. "Did you tell her I'm from Inusagi?"

"I'd like to take the credit but I'll bet it was Reiko or Kallista. Is it okay?"

She had a faraway look. "I was just thinking how much I miss home sometimes. It's... been a while since I've been back."

"You looked uncomfortable meeting everyone."

"A few months ago this ship and every member of her crew were my enemies. Even after the tour with Tess I feel like I'm on hostile ground."

"That's okay," he said. "I'd probably feel the same if I was in your place."

"It's been some time since you've been aboard, right?"

"Over a year," Taz nodded.

"Is it like you remembered?"

"Yes and no," he answered, his face masked by grief and darkness for a moment, before he banished both with a smile. "Anyway, there are two people I'd like you to meet." He took her hand and started to cross the bay.

"Crewmates?"

Taz shook his head. "Our hosts."

The two generals had settled near a scintillating cold plasma fountain and, temporarily at least, were unmolested. He felt Lyra stiffen as they approached and let his hand slip down her back in what he hoped was a reassuring gesture.

"Good evening, General Numarkos, General Rexler," Taz greeted them. He took Dee's offered hand.

"Hello, Taz!" Dee smiled, and for the first time Taz noticed the worry in her expression and a forlorn light in her eyes. He'd known sorrow during his time as a Rebel, but he'd never had to order anyone to their deaths as Dianthe Numarkos had. He'd seen that look in Sera's eyes too. Suddenly Taz was glad he'd never had to make those kinds of choices, or bear the burden that came with them. "I'm so happy to see you here tonight," she continued, snapping him out of his thoughts.

Taz mirrored her expression. "We're happy to be here, General." He turned to Rexler and shook his hand. "Thank you for having us, General Rexler."

"You're always welcome on the Old Ghost, Mr. Oktos."

"Generals, this is Lyra Nimor, our pilot." Then to her: "Lyra, this is General Avery Rexler, Chief of Staff for the Dulfilvian Sector Security Forces."

"Avery," he said, shaking Lyra's hand. "It's a pleasure to have you aboard the Pride of Olminar, Miss Nimor."

"Thank you, General," she replied, feeling hesitant. He had the bearing of an Imperial officer; not at all like what she'd imagined a Rebel commander would be. "You have an amazing ship. Thank you for welcoming me."

"And this is General Dianthe Numarkos, Chief of Operations for the DSSF and Chief Operating Officer of Karanos Transport Systems."

"Please call me Dee," Numarkos said, taking her hand and guiding her a little way from the two men. Guessing at her unease, she added, "You're amongst friends here, Lyra." She winked, the previous sadness in her eyes exchanged for mischief. "Now tell me, how were Taz and my nephew during your trip? They didn't chew your ear off, did they? We Filvians can be real talkers."

She felt her nervousness recede a little. "No ma'am. Not much, anyway." She took a drink and snuck a glance at Taz.

"It's Dee, Lyra." She gave her hand a squeeze. "Hard to get out of the military mindset even after leaving, isn't it?"

"Sometimes, ma—Dee," answered the pilot with a nervous laugh.

"And I wouldn't be surprised if you're feeling a little out of place, a former Imperial officer on a ship full of former Rebels."

Lyra made a half-hearted shrug. "A little, to be honest."

"You can rest easy, and I think you'll find you have some company in that regard."

"Oh?"

"Indeed." Dee's bright smile grew solemn. "Lyra, Rex and I are so very happy that you're here with us. You saved the lives of people who are very dear to us. I know it can't have been easy for you to take up arms against your former comrades."

"No," she agreed, glancing between the two flag officers and finishing her wine. Demetra swept in and took her empty glass. "Rendix—Sera reminded me not too long ago that sometimes bad choices are all we have. But they're my crewmates and... people I care about. I couldn't live with myself if I'd let anything happen to them."

Dee took both of her hands. "Well, I can never repay your kindness or your sacrifice but I want you to know how much I truly appreciate what you did for them." Then she pulled Lyra into a brief, heartfelt embrace and kissed her cheek before releasing her. "Filvians aren't just chatty. We put great stock in our friends and families. You're a member of the family now, Lyra, like it or not."

"That's..." Lyra's smile didn't quite hide her diffidence. "I've been hearing that a lot, lately. I'm grateful." Unconsciously she took a step toward Taz until she brushed against him. His hand felt warm and comforting against her skin when he let it settle at the small of her back again.

Taz looked across the hall at Sera and Rei, who were back to admiring each other as if they were the only two people in the universe. "Your idea, General?"

"As I told your beautiful companion, it's just Dee tonight, Taz," Dianthe chided him and slipped her arm around Rexler's. "And yes, I'll admit to having a hand in choosing your wardrobes. I hope you aren't disappointed. Lyra, that dress looks stunning on you. I do hope you like it."

"It's the most beautiful thing I've ever worn, Dee. Thank you."

Dee leaned in close. "The young man with you tonight thinks so too."

Lyra's cheeks burned but she smiled at the thought.

Taz added, "My fashion sense is about as sharp as a dewback's so I'm grateful for any help I can get. Besides," he watched Sera and Rei with a broad smile, "I think you made some fantasies come true tonight."

Dee laughed and looked delighted. "I hope so."

"You've taken your role as a Force user to heart," Rexler observed, nodding at Aurora Ascendant hanging from his belt. "I met a few Jedi, before the purge."

"I'm no Jedi, General, but I'm not going to run from my abilities either."

"You used them to good effect at Jakku, and more recently as I hear."

"Can't take the medic out of the man, I suppose. As for Jakku..." he let the pain of those months haunt him for a moment. "I did what I could, sir."

"A great deal more than that, I think."

He glanced around, uncomfortable with the subject. "Anyway, I'm not used to seeing the bay so empty, or so festive."

"She'll be back to hosting her flight of A-wings and their crews soon enough." Just then a trio of the wedge-shaped interceptors passed by, their Novaldex engines glowing at a mere fraction of their powerful potential. "For tonight, I'm happy that she can play host to wealthy guests and good friends."

"Ugh," Dee said suddenly, looking toward the open hangar portal. "That Algarian harpie Kloriz Balfour has arrived with her harem in tow." A shiny golden Starglider luxury shuttle slipped to a halt, its boarding port poking through the glowing white containment field. "I swear you can see that thing coming from a parsec away." A short woman swathed in furs and jewels, and attended by a half dozen bare-chested Twi'lek males walked into the hangar.

Avery patted her hand. "She has a certain image to maintain, after all."

"If she didn't have the ear of BlasTech's managing director in this sector..." She looked at the three of them with a mix of resignation and annoyance. "You two look wonderful. Please do enjoy yourselves tonight." With that she took Rexler's arm and they walked away, diplomatic smiles firmly fixed.

Lyra wore a subtle grin and hooked Taz's arm again. "We didn't have commanders like that."

Taz chuckled. "Would you believe they're both Anaxes grads?"

"I'm not surprised about General Rexler, but Numarkos too?"

"Yep. You'd never know it though."

"She's nothing like what I expected."

"A lot of our crew were pretty young. The generals were sort of like parents to all of us."

This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

Lyra smiled. "I'd never have thought of any of my COs as parents."

The ambient music faded and Demetra's voice issued from speakers throughout the hall. "Gentlebeings, on behalf of our host, Madam Dianthe Numarkos-nagrasha, welcome one and all to our gala. If you'll make your way to the portside gallery, dinner will be served presently. Please take the seat indicated on your gala pass or see one of my lovely and graceful sisters if you need any assistance whatsoever."

"Do we have gala passes?" Lyra asked.

Taz felt his pockets. "I didn't receive one."

They fell in with the crowd anyway. The corridor between the starboard and port hangars had been dressed with subdued lighting. Holo panels depicted artists' interpretations of a dozen worlds. In each, beautiful vistas alternated with the depredations of war. Taz stiffened as he recognized a blasted climate dome in one of them.

Lyra felt the sudden tension in his arm. "Do you know that place?"

"That's Vrast, where my family died."

She slipped her fingers between his, her expression sad and comforting at the same time.

Taz shook off the gloomy memory and forced a smile. "The point of tonight is to help make sure there aren't any more Vrasts. Or Inusagis."

The portside gallery was brighter, decorated in much the same way as the starboard hold. The music here came courtesy of a quintet playing ethereal-sounding themes on electronic instruments.

As soon as they emerged, Kallista pulled them from the crowd to join Tess, Varun, Sera, and Reiko.

"Good evening Mistress Lyra, Master Taz, If you'll follow me please, I'll escort you to your table."

She led them all the way to the far end of the hall near the hangar's open portal, to a long table atop a raised dais. Lyra saw the two generals seated at the very center. To the right of Numarkos sat a half dozen beings, including a woman she was sure was Dathomirian. The seats to Rexler's left were empty. Kalli led the group to that side and extended her arm. "Mistress Dianthe Numarkos-nagrasha has requested the honor of your company at the head table tonight. Captain Numarkos-nagrasha, please take the seat beside General Rexler with your beautiful fiancee. Mistresses Sera and Reiko, if you would kindly follow, then Mistress Lyra and Master Taz, if you please."

The crew of Allegra's Heart exchanged astonished glances as they followed Kallista up the steps.

Sera leaned over to Tess. "You two knew about this?"

Tess smiled. "General Numarkos informed us this afternoon." To Sera's uncertain look she added, "You won't have to make a speech or anything. At least I don't think you will." Her smile had a roguish look. "You're all heroes. Enjoy the night. You deserve it."

Reiko blushed with delight as Kallista placed aurodium-plated dinnerware before them and brought glasses of wine and mineral water. She squeezed Sera's hand under the table. "This is amazing, isn't it Sera-sha?"

"It sure is." She touched the long braid over her shoulder and eyed the approaching service droids with their trays of food. "I'm starving."

Reiko laughed. "That's the follicular net. It grows hair at a phenomenal rate through targeted metabolic acceleration, but you end up hungry as a blixus, even with nutritional supplements."

"Hungry doesn't cover it, Rei-sha. I'm ravenous."

"Your hair looks soooo beautiful, though. Will you keep it?"

"Haven't decided yet. It's... a big change."

Reiko pouted. "Please, Sera-sha. Try it for a while, for me."

From her other shoulder, Tess added, "I think it suits you, Captain Rendix."

Sera's eyes narrowed. "Did you two plan this?"

"Not at all," came Tess's perfectly innocent reply. "I've been thinking of growing mine out the way I used to wear it."

Sera looked back at Rei, who smiled and implored with her pretty eyes. She sighed. "I really can't say no to you, can I?"

"Of course not, and that's why I love you, Sera-sha!"

Serving began as soon as the guests found their seats. They dined on eight decadent courses prepared by the top chefs in the sector. Conscious of her position on the dais and the eyes of dozens of wealthy citizens and business beings, Sera resisted her desire to eat thirds and fourths of every dish set before her. Generous second helpings were another story entirely.

As plates were cleared, Kalli served little tartlets, puddings, and cakes. The server droids came swiftly behind, filling small glasses with ruby-colored, sweet-smelling brandy.

Dee Numarkos stood; the murmuring conversations and clinking of dinnerware died away with the music.

"Thank you all for coming tonight. As we celebrate the Praxis of Stars it pleases me to welcome so many dear friends and colleagues." She raised the little glass of dessert brandy. "On behalf of Karanos Transport Systems, greetings and felicitations." She sipped from the glass and the assembly followed.

"We're all here tonight because the galaxy is in need. The images you saw coming into the gallery were uncomfortable. But the reality is that while we sit here tonight, secure and sated on the very best dishes the sector has on offer, billions of our fellow citizens throughout the vast galaxy live desperate existences. They're ravaged by decades of war, centuries of neglect, and the predations of warlords, pirate bands, crime syndicates, and oppressive regimes.

"Twenty-five years ago we ended a disastrous war by granting absolute authority to a senator. He did what all men do when handed such unchecked power; he became a tyrant. Emperor Palpatine imposed order by crushing the aspirations of thousands of systems in a steel fist. His answer to the independent worlds that refused to be cowed was to grind them underfoot. And when that failed he brought his entire regime crashing down in an act of self-destructive insanity on a scale never before witnessed.

"From the debris of an orbital battle station over Endor and the burning wreckage on the sands of Jakku, the New Republic arose, promising an end to the Empire's oppression." She flashed an uncertain smile. "I would like to trust the lofty words of our senators and leaders. I sincerely believe that many have their hearts in the right place. Perhaps most of them do when they begin. But we see the inevitable result time after time: Inaction. Corruption. Neglect. Too often that is the best our leaders can manage, even for the Core worlds and those nearby. Here in the Mid Rim, we can charitably consider the New Republic to be little more than an absent overlord. In the Freestanding Sectors and the fringes of the Outer Rim, the force of government is felt very little, if at all.

"Meanwhile, we've achieved peace but the galaxy is far from peaceful." Into the cleverly projected starfield overhead came images of Imperial warships. "Until a few days ago a hidden fleet lay near Eadu, commanded by a renegade former Imperial task force commander. His dozens of vessels do not seem very threatening, yet if not for the bravery of an intrepid few we might even now be witnessing the resurgence of war."

Dee extended her arm toward Varun, Tess, and the others "Some of you will recognize dear kaashuub who have joined us tonight." The scene shifted to images of Rho-277 and the battle that Allegra's Heart had waged with the Kantorius. When it fired its miniature superlaser the room erupted with gasps; everyone recognized the same kind of terror weapon the Empire had unleashed at places like Jedha, Scarif, and Alderaan.

"The commander of that task force was planning to deploy scores of ships like these in the Outer Rim. It could have meant another war, millions more lives shattered, more years of suffering. Thankfully, these brave women and men learned of the plan and disrupted it, almost perishing in the process. They deserve our gratitude."

Rexler stood with her as Dee raised her glass again. These are the gallant members of the Rixon Charter Service: Captain Sera Rendix, Reiko Hudson, and Taz Oktos, lately our companions in Sector Force Seven-Six-Seven—"

"RAZORCLAW!" cried the Olminar's crew and Ballista commandos, drawing shocked looks from the other guests. Heedless, the ex-Rebels rose from their tables and hoisted their glasses.

"Quite right." Dee called, smiling at the raucous interruption. "I especially want to recognize Lyra Nimor, Rixon Charter Service's pilot. Ensign Nimor served in the Imperial Customs Service and the Navy until a few short months ago. I'm sure you can appreciate the... challenges that might arise when former Rebels and a former Imperial officer come together to build a better future for themselves. Old grievances are not easily put aside." Numarkos paused for a moment. "Yet if not for her courage and her devotion to her crewmates they might all have been lost forever." Dee saluted Lyra with a fond smile and raised her glass. Lyra raised hers in response and nodded deeply, sudden tears pooling in her eyes as applause erupted in the hall.

"And finally, our very own Captains Tess Daro and Varun Numarkos, who brought vital intelligence back to the New Republic so that we could pursue the outlaw fleet. To each of you, our heartfelt appreciation for your heroic efforts, and our fondest hopes for your continued good health and success. Cheers!"

"TOPAA, TOPAA!" shouted the guests, calling out the traditional Filvian benediction. On the dais, even Sera, who normally had excellent mastery of her emotions, couldn't suppress a smile, or the hint of moisture that gathered at the corners of her eyes. Varun and Tess stood to accept the crowd's appreciation. Sera and Reiko followed. Lyra looked awestruck. Taz smiled and drew her to her feet, blushing at the rousing calls of the crowd, and not a few whistles.

When the applause and accolades died down, Dee continued. "The resurgence of war is an ever-present danger. Where good people of the galaxy live in hopelessness and despair, the seeds of chaos grow unchecked. Government can do its part but too often its part is far too little." She looked to her right. "If we're to make the galaxy a place of peace for its trillions and trillions of citizens, we must step in where governments fail to act.

"I spoke of Rebels and Imperials coming together for a better future. I'd like to introduce you to dear friends of mine. Sitting with me tonight are the founders of Rim Rehab, a group of former enemies, Imperial and Alliance military officers, technicians, and civilians, who recognize that healing a wounded galaxy is a task that falls to all of us.

"Gentlebeings, friends, I'm honored tonight to present to you the founders of Rim Rehab. Former Imperial Commander Hoerst Trenner and Alliance Commander Sorena Sagol faced each other in their warships during multiple engagements during the war before finding common cause. They brought together a team dedicated to repairing the damage of that wasteful war. Colonel Anton Kenzee commanded an Imperial engineering and construction battalion. K'nar Halikstond served on this very ship, the Pride of Olminar, as a flight technician and engineer." Yet another shout of "RAZORCLAW!" reverberated throughout the bay for the Filvian, who waved enthusiastically to his fellows.

Dee waited again for the ruckus to die down before continuing. "Doctor Palaras Sedaya brings years of experience in emergency medicine and disaster recovery, and Tabotha Luma'No was Director-General of logistics at D'boath Technologies. These enterprising people have already established a fledgling network of like-minded beings with a vision to rehabilitate the Mid and Outer Rim worlds that have suffered too long, whether from the depredations of war or the neglect of their leaders.

"Now is a unique moment, one we might not see again in our lifetimes. The new government is finding its footing. The old government retreats behind its treaty borders and looks inward. Rim Rehab and groups like it, groups not beholden to governments, dependent upon their good graces or parties to their corruption, might arise and do what governments too often cannot or will not—" Above her the projections showed Rim Rehab technicians repairing power stations, unloading relief supplies and erecting a field hospital. "Bring stability and peace, restore shattered infrastructures, help rebuild economies, provide relief to those who suffer and, at the most extreme need, defend the defenseless." The scene changed to show a quartet of pirate ships engaged with a Charger c70 cruiser that was painted in dark blue and white chevrons. The double-Resh symbol of Rim Rehab showed prominently on its triangular aft hull.

"I've spoken enough. Talk, as they say, costs nothing. Karanos Transport Systems believes in the mission of Rim Rehab. Tonight, gentlebeings, I ask you to join us. To demonstrate our commitment, KTS has established the Rim Rehab Endowment in the amount of eighteen million credits."

The room filled with gasps. Trenner, Sagol, and the others sitting beside Numarkos all looked nonplussed. Dee had apparently kept that bit of news to herself. She smiled at their reactions before returning to the guests.

"It's a large sum, yes, but a mere fraction of what will be needed in the years to come. I want to ask those of you here who have the means, whether through personal good fortune or through your corporations and businesses, to give generously to this worthiest of causes." She lifted her glass again. "To Rim Rehab and its life-saving work, cheers. TOPAA!"

"TOPAA! TOPAA! TOPAA!" More applause thundered, sustained and enthusiastic.

Dee let it continue for a minute, then raised her hand. "I hope you'll all enjoy yourselves tonight. We'll have dancing after dessert and drinks. Our graceful attendants, Athenia, Demetra, Kallista, and Laetia, are eager to make your night an enjoyable one. Please do let them know of any desires you may have. Once again I thank you for your friendship and generosity." She lifted her glass to the crowd and emptied it as the musicians began playing lively synthesized melodies.

Kallista walked over. Beside her were Commanders Sagol and Trenner from Rim Rehab, still looking a little awestruck. Varun, Tess, and Sera rose to greet them.

"Captains," began Trenner, shaking each of their hands. "General Numarkos gave us a summary of your recent activities at Beta Fonidian Two."

"They could use the support of an organization like yours," Tess replied, exchanging handshakes.

"They have a rare abundance of kyberite and the facilities to mine it," Varun added. "The enhanced laser weapon you saw in the holo was made with those crystals but they've agreed to abandon that work. Instead," Numarkos drew a code cylinder from his breast pocket, "they're making plans to manufacture compact power reactors, enhanced by their kyber crystals. I'm no engineer but we're talking about a ten-ton unit that can provide power to thousands and doesn't need extensive infrastructure to support it."

"Cheap power, easily delivered even by a light freighter," Sera finished. "It could be a boon for struggling worlds."

"That's quite an intriguing idea," said Sagol, taking the cylinder from Varun.

"There's a possibility for some export crops, too. A local grain called sarna. I think it could make a real splash in the beverage market."

The Rim Rehab Dathomirian and Human leaders exchanged meaningful looks. "We're interested in helping. We'd like to discuss potential support options with you. Perhaps tomorrow?"

Varun nodded. "We'll look forward to it. I'll have my assistant set up a meeting."

While they spoke droids flooded the floor, clearing the dinner tables. The lights dimmed as the overhead projection returned to a peaceful firmament. The musicians began playing and a soft glow lit the center of the gallery. Avery Rexler and Dee Numarkos walked onto the floor and began to dance. Other guests followed.

Tess turned to her comoanions. "Care to join us?"

Reiko nodded with delight, grabbed Sera's hand and pulled her to her feet.

"Taz? Lyra?"

Taz had never thought of himself as much of a dancer. "We'll be right out. You go ahead."

Lyra questioned with her eyes as the others joined the revelers. Taz fished a little square box from his pocket. "What's that?"

He lifted the lid to reveal the necklace he'd made from the crystal Jerric had given him. Below it was a pair of earrings. "I, um, thought maybe you'd accept them this time."

"Taz," Lyra breathed, meeting his eager gaze with a nod.

Taz fastened the fine rose gold chain around her neck. She touched the crystal. "You found a new one?"

"Jerric gave it to me." He took the little crystal earrings from the box. "Reiko found these in the turbolaser's wreckage. They're about all that was left of the original." He held them out to her and she fastened them to her ears.

"I—don't know what to say," Lyra uttered softly, her cheeks flushed.

Taz held out his hand. "Say you'll dance with me, Lyra Nimor."

She laid her hand in his and they joined the throng on the dance floor. "I didn't know you could dance."

Taz looked embarrassed. "I can't really. We learned a few dances back in school but that was years ago."

She smiled at his stiff posture. "Start by relaxing, Oktos," she teased. "Just follow me." She began moving along the dance floor with graceful gliding steps in time with the music, guiding Taz with light pressure.

"You can dance!" he exclaimed.

Her eyes twinkled in the low light. After a few repetitions he'd mastered the sequence and he relaxed a little more.

She touched the crystal at her throat. "Do they—Does giving gifts like these have any particular significance for Filvians?"

Taz laughed quietly. "I just wanted to do something nice for you. You're not obligated or anything. I know you don't like being indebted."

"No I don't," she echoed.

"How do Inusagians give gifts to people they care about?"

"It depends on a lot of things, but we show our appreciation with jewelry, too." She looked chagrined. "I don't have a gift for you. I hope that's okay."

"I'm just happy you're with me." Heat rose in his cheeks. "I owe you my life twice over. It's not an obligation, Lyra, it's a bond. One I'll never forget."

A bond. She'd never thought of it like that. Not something she had to repay, but something that joined them together.

He was about to say more when the music faded. Taz was surprised when Varun and Tess came over. They applauded the musicians along with the crowd.

"You two look like you're having a good time," observed Varun.

"So do you," Taz answered.

Tess touched Lyra's shoulder. "Would you mind if I borrowed Taz for the next dance?"

"Not at all," she agreed, barely hesitating.

Varun made an elaborate bow. "Miss Nimor, would you grace me with the pleasure of your company for this dance?"

Lyra could hardly refuse. She glanced at Taz, who looked as bewildered as she was. "Of course, Captain Numarkos."

Tess smiled and slipped her hand into her former lover's. Taz let his hand settle lightly on her waist as they fell into step with the music.

"You can do better than that, Taz," she said and stepped closer.

"I, um, don't want your fiancé to get the wrong idea."

"You don't need to be concerned about him." She looked over her shoulder at Varun and Lyra who were talking quietly and gliding around the floor. "See? Nothing to worry about. Lyra's a good dancer."

Taz grinned. After a few steps he said, "I need to apologize for the way I acted on Jakku and on the ship." He looked sincere and apologetic. "I was hurt but I had no right to hurt you too. I just want you to know how sorry I am."

She squeezed his hand. "A lot happened to both of us, Taz. Apology accepted."

"I'm sorry for what I said about leaving your parents behind, too."

"It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, leaving them in danger like that. I hated it and," she looked away for a moment, "I hated you a little, too."

"It's okay, Tess. I didn't want Varun to have to be the bad guy. I'm really glad everything turned out okay. Your parents are amazing. I'm happy I was able to meet them."

"I am too." She looked at him and smiled. "So, how's 'Life After Jakku' going for you?"

"How'd you know about that?"

"Sera might have mentioned it. She cares about you a lot."

"Sera saved my life, Tess. I can't imagine where I'd be right now if not for her." Taz cleared his throat and the corners of his mouth twitched into a smile. "As for life after Jakku, it's... looking up." He snuck a glance at Lyra and his smile grew.

"You're totally smitten, aren't you?" Tess teased. He didn't need to respond; his face couldn't hide his feelings. "If I didn't know better I'd think you had some kind of pilot fetish."

"It's not like that," he feigned indignation. "You were right, though. She's good for me. Sera, too. They keep me from spending too much time in my own head. In different ways, of course!"

Tess grinned but she felt sad at the same time. A part of her wanted to keep him for herself. "I'm happy for you, Taz." Then in a smaller voice, barely audible above the music, she said, "I still miss you, though."

Taz chuckled. "I miss you too, Tess. You were the first woman I ever fell—"

"I know. It was the same for me." Tess pressed even closer to him, afraid of what she might do if he finished that sentence. After a moment she looked at him, her dark eyes moist. "I know we aren't together anymore but... I don't want to lose you."

"You haven't lost me, Tess, and you never will." He held her tightly for a moment. "We're just moving on with life, that's all."

Tess nodded, blinking tears away. She kissed his cheek, letting her lips linger on his warm skin. Then she closed her eyes and recalled the best of their seven years together while they danced.

----------------------------------------

Lyra gave Varun a cautious look as she took his hand. They both glided easily in time with the music.

Varun tilted his head. "You're quite the dancer, I see."

"My parents favored a comprehensive education. You're doing pretty well yourself."

"For whatever reason the instructors at Corulag thought it was important we learn the basics when I was a cadet." He smiled at her. "You're wearing the new necklace that Taz made for you. He told me what happened to the first one."

Lyra looked embarrassed. "I refused that one when he gave it to me." She touched one of the earrings. "These are all that's left."

"Any reason why?"

"I... didn't want to be obligated to him."

"And now?"

"You ask a lot of questions, Captain."

"Yes, well... Intelligence officer. Guilty as charged, I suppose."

The pilot smiled a little. "Now I see it for what it is—a bond of affection."

"Affection's one word for it," he japed. "In any case we should all thank you for refusing his gift. If Taz-grasha hadn't had that crystal, Miss Hudson might not have been able to modify your ship's cannon to overwhelm the Kantorius's shields, and we'd all be space dust, or rotting in prison cells somewhere awaiting execution. Speaking of which, Tessa told me what you did, rescuing Taz and me, destroying the base's shield so we could escape, and crippling the Kantorius. Besides saving my life, for which I'm truly grateful, I want to say how impressed I am with your daring and resourcefulness. We could use someone with your talents in the New Republic. I'd welcome the opportunity to work with you on other missions."

"I appreciate the compliment, Captain."

"Varun, please."

"Alright, Varun," she echoed. "I'm happy where I am for now. Besides, we owe Auxiliary Fleet duty every year, so I guess we could find ourselves working together in the future."

"Fair enough, but if you ever decide you'd like a change of pace I hope you'll let me know."

Lyra gave him a noncommittal smile and continued dancing. After a while she admitted, "I'm glad I met you and Tess. My stock of acquaintances is pretty low."

"After what we've experienced together 'acquaintance' seems a little impersonal, don't you think?"

She looked uncomfortable. "Friends, then?"

He smiled. "I'd be honored indeed if you'd think of me as your friend."

Lyra crimsoned at the sincerity in his expression. "Stop it. You're as bad as Oktos."

Varun's smiled broadened. "We Filvians are a gregarious sort."

"You Filvians are an annoying sort," she retorted, looking sly. "Thanks, though."

Varun watched Tessa and Taz dancing a few meters away. "Sometimes I think Tessa doesn't want to let him go," Varun quietly uttered.

"They were together for years," Lyra said, trying to sound sympathetic, "but I know how much she loves you." When he looked surprised, she added, "We talked a lot on the way to Beta Fonidian. Even more on the way back. What I'm saying is, you don't need to worry."

"I appreciate you saying that, thanks." The song built to its conclusion. Varun bowed deeply at the waist as the final chords reverberated in the hall. "Come on, Lyra. Let's you and I reclaim our partners."

----------------------------------------

It's too soon. Just a little longer. Tess clung to Taz even harder as the rising strains from the players signaled the song's last refrain. She felt him clinging too. When she opened her eyes, Taz stared at her, looking as fervent as he had the first night they'd spent together. In a trembling voice she began, "Taz, I—"

He stopped her with a melancholy smile. "I know, Tess." His eyes filled with tears and his voice was husky, brimming with emotion. The music fell away and they relaxed their embrace. From the corner of his eye he saw Varun and Lyra approaching. He kissed her cheek then took a step back, still holding her hand. "Go on, Tessalyn Daro. It was a terrific dance we had."

Her expression was full of gratitude and anguish. "Yes it was, Taz." Then she walked toward Varun, her fingers lingering against his as they parted.

Taz blinked his eyes while Lyra drew near. The musicians began another piece. He took her hand, marveling at how different it felt from Tess's. Different, but good.

"That looked... intense."

"We were saying goodbye." His voice shook a little.

"You okay?"

Taz hesitated before answering. "Yeah, I think so." He sniffled and they danced in silence for a while.

"I'm not her, you know."

"I don't want you to be."

Carefully, she asked, "What do you want, Taz?"

He felt the ache of having let go of Tess but Lyra's warmth blunted the sting. He locked his eyes on hers. "What I have right in front of me, Lyra."

Her breath caught under his vivid gaze. "Stop staring at me, Oktos," she chastised without any conviction.

Taz didn't stop. "Why do you color your hair?"

"You don't like it?"

"I do, I just wondered why." He touched the scarlet streak before caressing her cheek and letting his hand drift down her back.

"It used to remind me of how furious I was when I learned my family had been murdered. But now it's just to remember them."

"And the silver?"

She smiled at a memory. "When Allegra went through her rebellious phase I tagged along. She liked pink, I liked platinum. It stuck."

"You loved your sister very much."

"She was my world, Taz. I'd have done anything for her."

"I'm glad Sera and Rei named the ship after her."

"So am I," she sighed and laid her head on his shoulder, feeling the weight of those recollections. "Can we stay like this for a while?"

"For as long as you like, Lyra." They shut out the world except for the music.

Eventually the song ended. Lyra lifted her head. "Thank you, Taz."

"For what? Dancing with the most beautiful woman in the sector?"

She shook her head and stared at him through thick lashes. "For saving me. And not just my life." Her voice fell to a mere whisper. "My heart, too." Surprised by her own admission, she followed with an embarrassed scowl. "Moons, I can't believe I just said that."

"Lyra," Taz quietly exclaimed. His cool blue eyes had never looked so captivating, or desirous.

"Stop staring at me," she repeated, heat rushing to her cheeks.

He bent toward her ear with a playful look. "Make me."

She trembled at the feel of his breath on her skin. He was toying with her like she'd done to him when they left Rho-277. That's a game two can play. She looked around the room. "I don't see Rendix or Reiko."

I, uh, think they snuck out early," Taz stammered at the sudden change of topic.

I've unbalanced him again. Point to me. "Oh?"

"The way Rei was leering at Sera, I'm pretty sure they're enjoying each other's company somewhere cozy and private."

"Mmm. I wouldn't mind finding someplace to get off my feet. These shoes—"

"Look great!" he blurted, grinning in that awkward, earnest way that stopped her heart way too often recently. "I could help with that, you know."

"Are you going to use the Force to make them feel better?"

Taz tilted his head. "Thought I'd use my hands. Maybe start with your feet..." His smile grew, "and work my way up."

Lyra had never wanted anything more than she wanted Tazbarada Oktos at that moment. She lifted her chin and let her lips brush against his. "I'm going to hold you to that," she breathed and pulled him toward the exit.
