Chapter 14

(I was trained by the Ascendant of the Old Creed. I was trained to eliminate their enemy’s enforcers. When the task was complete, I was given the freedom I had feared.)

(Heading west, I wandered all the way to the blighted lands. Things lurked in the festering swamps and barren plains. Relics of old wars stalked the fetid bogs. The Azenthon’s machines, the spawn of the Magnog, it was all the same to me, just another threat that needed to be dealt with.)

(It was here that I would linger. Among the stagnant bogs and the killing fields I hunted those things which time had failed to terminate. Now they rust and rot beneath the still waters.)

(I grew bored. The hunt became stale, as stagnant as the waters. It is in my nature to roam. Too much time spent in the same place dulls the mind and the senses.)

(I came to the hills of Kuloth. Skeletons, many of them colossal in size were piled up, the corpses left to decompose when the battle was over. Many battles fought in that place. Whole armies were massacred. Only bones and metal remain.)

(Among the dead I meditated. Reaching out with my awareness, I studied the corpses of long dead warriors and conscripts. Each told a story. I perceived tragedy. In many of them, I saw something that resembled what I had been shaped into.)

(I felt tempted to build a hut there. That would have been a fine place to be an anchorite. A life as a hermit would be peaceful. But I need the hunt, and I cannot stand to stay in one place for long.)

(I chose to travel the length of the abandoned highway. This road was incomplete, its creators long dead. Yet, it wasn’t completely deserted. Scavengers lived among the ruins which dotted the roadside. It was among them that I became a hunter in the truest sense.)

(I hunted to help feed those that starved. When it was needed, I hunted those that had given into savagery. I am true to myself. The former brought joy. The later brought total bliss.)
