Chapter 5: Second Horde And Weakness

Chapter 5: Second Horde And Weakness

Evan’s POV

“Evan dear, wake up! You’ve been meditating for two weeks already!”,said Mirana cheerfully as she patted the laid back figure of Evan on his cheeks.

Evan opened his eyes slowly while breathing out green mana. He had just finished absorbing more mana from the Mother’s Tree. Because Evan was technically spawned from the Mother’s Tree the more mana he absorbed the more power he had, although even without the mana he had absorbed the past two weeks his power was already on par with a high leveled monster near the Mother’s Tree.

He stood up and then stumbled surprising his mother as she hurriedly caught him before he went head first off the tree.

Argh! Why does my head hurt? Did I take in too much mana?

See, even Evan who was directly birthed by the Mother’s Tree could not absorb to much mana without overdrawing on his body. His mother looked at him with concern and asked.

“You ok there dear? You seem to be a bit shaky”

“I’m fine mother, most likely taxed my body by meditating for two weeks straight. After a bit of processing I should be fine.”

Mirana smiled again although still worried.

“Since you have mana to burn do you want to take out another monster that snuck in?”

Evan looked at her with disbelief, head still hurting.

“I’ve only been meditating for two weeks and the first you tell me when I come out of meditation is that something sneaked in again?”

“Yes, that is exactly what is happening deary. Don’t worry about where its located I found it since the thing managed to sneak into the middle layer.”

The dungeon had four layers beginning, middle, deep, grand. Each layer had harder and harder monsters to fight while the grand layer was the Mother’s Tree. A monster being able to sneak into the middle layer of the forest was impressive since it managed to avoid making the monsters in the beginning layer panic.

“Did it set off a monster horde?”,Evan said while standing up, the headache was temporarily suppressed as he emitted mana.

“Yes the thing managed to set off the Kodom Mushrooms.”

Evan thought for a moment. The Kodom Mushrooms were rather weak by middle layer standards since all they could do was charge and spread a thin layer of spores, but a horde was another story since the spores could cause harmful effects once enough was stacked up.

“Where is the exact position of the monster?”

His cloak and bow materialized while he asked.

“Just due north about 10 miles from the Lizard Elder Cave.”

“Thanks mother, I’ll be right back.”

Evan started to run towards the north while waving goodbye. After about seven minutes of just running with another minute of avoiding the random traps his mother set then forgot about Evan reached the spot. He heard sounds of fighting so he slowly approached the area.

I didn’t think someone would actually try fighting off a horde this deep in the forest.

Evan was surprised because there really weren’t that many people fighting off the horde of approximately 200 mushrooms with several hundred more burning on the ground, there were only 15 people fighting. Wait sixteen, a girl with red hair was being blocked from view by one of the fighters a few moments ago.

The 2,500 strong mushroom horde was reduced to 200 in the time it took Evan to wake up and run towards the location of the horde.

Maybe I can sit back and watch for this one? I won’t be able to get a pearl with these people here and the mana I needed to get out of my system should have been enough after almost ten minutes of straight emitting.

Before Evan even got comfortable however the beast that set off the horde jumped out from behind a tree as if angry that humans would dare intrude on its eating. The beast was a deer about six feet tall but with spikes all over like a porcupine. Its red eyes shining with murder.

“I’ll take it on!”,yelled the girl while also instructing the others to,”finish off the rest of the mushrooms”

Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions.

Evan was amused by this act since the deer was at least twice as strong as the mushrooms. At least he was amused until the girl’s sword caught fire.

A magic knight? This might be an interesting fight.

The girl started to do battle with the unbound monster. Even though the battle looked to be in the murder deer’s favor Evan could see that the girl was giving the creature several cuts all over that were bleeding while sustaining no actual injuries aside from a couple cuts from the quills of the deer.

She fights well, but it won’t end the way she thinks. The deer still hasn’t used anything other than kicks and head bashes. All those cuts are doing is enraging it more.

Sure enough the deer was getting angrier and angrier. It snorted before stopping its assault looking as if it wanted to run away because of the injuries it sustained. The female fell for the trap it had laid as she rushed forward to kill it. The deer turned at a astonishing speed and then started shooting quills out of its back at high speeds. The girl realized to late before hurriedly blocking with her sword.  She seemed to struggle a bit before regaining her ground as she adapted to the deer’s new attacks.

Evan was impressed by the adaptability of the girl.

I think I’ll help this interesting human. She deserves it for being able to fight a unbound monster one on one.

Evan unslung his bow and pulled back the string. A arrow appeared notched on the bow.

“Fase Ern Pel”, he chanted.

No mana gathered, but the arrow seemed to be sharper and was making a small whistling sound. Right as Evan shot the arrow he was hit by a huge headache causing his aim to shift slightly.

Argh! What the hell.

The headache was gone almost as quick as it had come. Evan started looking at where the arrow was headed.

Dammit!

The arrow flew, instead of heading at the deer’s head was actually going to pierce the deer’s neck. At least it would have been able to do such a thing if a certain red haired girl’s head wasn’t in the direct path of said arrow. Thankfully however the girl heard the slight whistling sound of the arrow and instinctively leaned her head to the side to dodge it. The arrow hit the deer and buried itself into its neck.  The deer reared its head one last time before falling to the ground dead.

Evan sighed with relief because he didn’t want to kill such a interesting human and even if he did kill the girl on accident. There would be no repercussions cause no one would ever know who did it because of the arrow vanishing along with his cloak hiding him. Evan started to walk away from the party who had just finished killing off the rest of the mushroom monsters. And then a dagger came flying at him missing his cloak and imbedding itself into the tree next to him. Evan froze.

They shouldn’t be able to see me. Only high level dispel spells can see through my cloak.

A female voice could be heard behind Evan.

“Who are you! Why did you shoot that arrow at me!?”

Well time to make a disappearing act.

Evan was just about to run for it at high speed when another headache hit him this one was even stronger than the last causing him to collapse from the pain. His hood caught on elbow as he clutched his head causing it to come off. He popped into the visible spectrum again.

Well that had just the BEST timing gaia it hurts! It hurts!

His sudden appearance startled and alerted the others in the party about his presence. Evan heard one of them walking towards him, but couldn’t do anything to stop them. The pain was just too much. He felt one of them grab him by the arm and then lifted him up pulling both of Evan’s hands behind his back. Then he was pushed in front of the girl with red hair now with several small cuts and damage on her skin and armor.

“Princess we have the assassin”,said the one who had Evan held captive.

Oh great! It just had to be human royalty and I almost shot her! This is gonna be a problem.

Tana POV

This was suppose to be a rather easy accomplishment according to father! So much for that.

Tana was having a good day up until now. She had prepared her equipment and set off after a week. Then took four days to reach the dungeon. Afterwards she easily cleared the first layer of the forest in two days and was progressing steadily across the second layer when she and her guards were swarmed by a monster horde.

“A monster horde occurred two weeks ago and another one just happened to form. Just my luck”,Tana muttered to herself darkly.

“Did you say something Princess”,asked one of the guards that father had assigned her.

“Nothing, nothing just get ready for a fight.”

It was actually rather easy for Tana to clear away the mushroom horde with just a couple swings of her sword. Everything was going well, then the deer came. It was a beast with quills all across its body and a long horn on its head. Might have even looked cute if it wasn’t give Tana the look as if she was gonna be stabbed to death. Tana immediately engaged the monster leaving the rest of her guards to finish off the mushrooms. She was then tricked by the deer and the minute after she got used to the murder deer’s quill attack she instinctively sensed something behind her, so she tilted her head sideways and watched as a arrow impaled itself clean into the deer’s neck. Tana instantly turned around looking for the archer that almost killed her. There was no one with a bow and arrow in her party though. All were warriors from the royal guard, not archers from the royal assassins.

“Arum”,Tana chanted causing the ring of the royal family to glow for a brief moment. She then scanned the area again to see a figure in a cloak that wasn’t there before walking away. Tana instantly unsheathed the dagger she kept on her thigh and threw it. She was slightly off target because of the injuries she sustained, but it was enough to make the figure freeze.

Tana then yelled,”Who are you! Why did you shoot that arrow at me!?”

Tana was just about to despair because the figure looked like it was about to make a break for it before mysteriously collapsing and having its cloak hood slip off.

Tana indicated to a guard to bring the figure over.

As the guard walked over and picked up the figure she could see that her attacker was short with a childish face. The guard walked the child over to Tana.

“Princess we have the assassin”,said the guard.

Tana was now close enough to see the assassin’s face. It was a boy who had green hair and eyes with a cute face. She might have even tried giving him a sweet if the boy didn’t just try killing her.

“You will answer my questions”

“Hear me out ok princess”,the boy said with maturity in his tone by childishness in his voice,”I was just killing the deer, my aim was just thrown off”

That sounds like such a excuse. Who would even train such a child to kill?

Tana naturally didn’t believe a word of it. Instead she was thinking who would send an assassin after her. She had a couple suspicions. She then glanced back at the boy who seemed to have been muttering something under his breath.

Not good!

She jumped, knocking the guard off his feet before grabbing onto the boy. She felt herself become weightless before feeling her body hit the ground. After getting over the dizziness of being pulled from one place to another. Tana looked around herself seeing trees behind her and a river in front. She then turned to head to see the boy, who was lying on the ground motionless.

Whats going on?

She had assumed that the boy was planning on using a spell to self destruct after failing his mission to kill her.

But then why? Why did he teleport instead?

Tana decided that in order to find out who the boy was she would hide her presence and follow the boy.

Let’s see what you're really up too.
