Chapter 11: Sagen Hunting

Chapter 11: Sagen Hunting

Rin’s workplace wasn’t too far and was able to get there shortly. In front of him is a 3 story building. The owners have their housing and restaurant all in one building. The third floor is the bedroom, the second floor is the living room, and the first floor is the actual restaurant.

It may be 3 stories tall but the building itself doesn’t offer that much space, it only has enough space for a kitchen and 4 tables on the first floor.

Rin went straight to the top floor. He didn’t see the old man and madam on the way and assumes the worst-case scenario since the town is basically overrun.

He scouts the area with the binoculars. He sees that the sagens and imps mostly occupy this part of town but he also spots another creature.

Their form is similar to that of a gorilla. They are about 2.5 meters tall. Their two legs are digitigrade; in other words, it is structured like a t-rex or a velociraptor. Their arms are brawny and long enough that it reaches the ground. They mostly walk on fours but they can also walk on two if they want to. Thick green fur protects their body and a cloak of quills rest on their hunched back. Their face has a small similarity to a reptile’s. They are herbivores so their teeth are not sharp like those of a predator’s. Their overall body is bulky.

Despite their intimidating appearance, they are not violent creatures. They ignore most of the creatures and will not attack unless provoked, even the imps are comfortable enough to stand right next to them. They are able to enjoy their greens in peace since nobody is willing to taunt them, not even the sagens.

They look incredibly strong so Rin doubts that he’ll learn their species name anytime soon, so he decides to call them ‘quill-back’ for now.

Rin observes the other creatures a little longer to get a better understanding of them. He sees that the sagens and the imps have beef with one another. The sagens would always try to fight the imps when given the opportunity.

The imps’ only means of combat is their immobilizing ability but the sagens would pierce them before they could touch the sagens. So they tend to avoid the sagens unless they can find an opening to sneak up on them.

Rin stops scouting and takes out an imp core then uses [inspect mana core]. He didn’t plan to do this at first because he wanted his mana to stay full but he wanted to know more about the imp’s ability.

-----------------------------------------

[Mana Core: gernu]

Skills:

* [Solar Charge level 1]

* Convert sunlight into lightning that is stored in your body

* 10 hour for full charge

* Cost: 2 gernu cores or 2 skill points

* Note: 4 gernu cores can be absorbed for 1 skill point

-----------------------------------------

‘So that’s how the skill work. They store lightning in their wings, then use it to shock and numb their targets. The brighter their wings, the more charge they have.’

The gurnu’s ability sounds strong despite the 10-hour charge, so Rin would rather not antagonize them. It doesn’t seem like they are interested in Rin anyway so he feels that they shouldn’t be a concern.

Rin did not see any signs of humans when scouting the area, so he plans to go to the police station in the center of town. He reckons that people would go to the police who could protect them.

On the other hand, he might instead find some strong creatures occupying the police stations based on what he read online yesterday, but he wants to go there anyway in the slim chance that he find survivors.

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

Rin will also be looking to fight as many sagens as he can on the way. Their attack pattern is simple and there is quite a few numbers of them, so he figures that it should be easy exp as long as he doesn’t get careless.

He goes to the first floor to search for a better knife. Actually, he is specifically looking for a machete.

The old madam’s relative grows coconut trees and they would give a batch of coconut to the old madam. They can’t finish it all themselves so they would often sell it in their shop and the machete is what the old man would use to cut them open.

Rin was quite happy to find the machete. It’s quite deadly and is his most lethal weapon right now. He switches the spear to the left hand and holds the machete on his right. He is holding both the spear and staff on the left now. He could put the spear in his backpack but it would stick out a bit.

Having nothing else to do in the building anymore, he goes out to hunt the sagens.

An hour later.

The sagens mostly travel in small packs of 2 or 3 so he had no problems with them, but he eventually came across a pack of 6 that he had to be wary of. He’s not confident that he can come out of that fight unscathed. After thinking for a little while, he decides to use the same door trick that he used on the skeletons.

Rin enters their field of view and they immediately give chase. Rin finds that they are very aggressive and competitive despite being small. It reminds him of the chihuahuas with a small frame but a big personality.

He leads them into a cafe and they enter one by one. Two of them can actually fit through the door but they are so focused on Rin that they took up most of the space by entering through the center, leaving no room for the others.

This made it much easier for Rin so he was able to easily defeat them. The machete prove invaluable as he cut them down with ease compared to the spear. In the past hour, he defeated 20 sagens in total.

-----------------------------------------

[20 Tier 1 sagens has been slain]

[+20 exp]

[Exp: 8/9] 🠖 [Exp: 8/13]

[Level 3 🠖 level 5]

[+4 stat points]

In addition to the 20 sagen cores, Rin also got 2 additional gernu cores from 2 gernu corpses that the sagens killed.

Even though he didn’t fight for 1 hour straight and took breaks in between, the sagens gave him quite the workout so he takes a breather inside the cafe. He grabs a water bottle and takes a seat. He clears his mind and gazes through the window outside.

Various shops are set up on both sides of the street. The trees and flowers add a small touch of nature to the urban area. Bodies strew the road and cars are parked on the side. The once populated street lacks the bustling that it used to have, only small birds and magical creatures from unknown origins fill the silence.

Rin checks the time. It is only 12 pm in the afternoon, there’s still plenty of time before it gets dark. He honestly feels that there are no more humans left in this town base on the number of corpses but he already came this far so he might as well finish it.

Before heading out, Rin put 2 points into mana and 2 points into agility, now he has 12 mana and 9 agility. He decided to invest in agility just in case he needs to escape an opponent he can’t handle. Being faster would also give him an edge in combat as well.

He follows the road towards the center of town. He spots two quill-back on the side of the road, one is munching on the leaves of a tree while the other is eating grass and flowers. None of them displays any interest in Rin as they simply enjoy their meal.

There are also a few gernus observing Rin on top of buildings, about 10 of them. Since he only looted the sagens’ core and left the body behind, the gernus had been collecting the bodies for consumption so a few of them followed him to collect the scraps.

He wasn’t too concerned about them because they show no signs of hostility despite gathering in numbers. But he still keeps an eye on them just in case they suddenly become bold.

He comes across a park after a few minutes of walking. Not too many people come here so it’s relatively small compared to other parks. There are only a few benches and a small playground.

Right now, a dead human rests on a table, and around that table are 6 goblins eating the human corpse. People may normally find this view disturbing but it didn’t bother Rin too much. Instead, he is looking forward to gaining some exp.
