A female corpse

It was a woman. We didn’t know how long she had been dead, but it must have been a very long time, because her body had already turned into a skeleton.

Due to her straw-like long hair, her gender was still identifiable.

When the body was carried out, a foul, rotten stench instantly filled the room.

I had never smelled anything so disgusting in my life; it was beyond words.

And perhaps due to the cement, the clothes on the corpse were remarkably well preserved.

When we saw the clothes on the body, David and I were so terrified that we collapsed on the spot.

A black dress and red high heels.

Wasn’t this the outfit that the girl who knocked on our door last night was wearing?

The four of us rushed to the bathroom and started vomiting like crazy.

There was only one bathroom, and the four of us took turns, one after another, to throw up.

David and I vomited the most, not only because of the sight of the corpse and the unbearable stench,

but more importantly, because we couldn’t believe that this body, dead for so many years, was someone we had seen just last night.

As the female corpse was dug out, Mr. Smith was both shocked and furious. He lost his temper at the scene, cursing us non-stop, saying we had sold him a haunted house.

But honestly, we were wronged in this matter too.

We had no idea that anything bad had happened in this house, let alone that there was a corpse hidden inside.

As real estate agents, our job is only to connect buyers and sellers. Although we have a duty to disclose such information, we can only do so if we actually know that something happened in the house.

Mr. Smith kept shouting at us, and his yelling even drew out the neighbors. The police eventually told us to head back to the station.

That day, David and I didn’t get a moment’s rest.

First, we went to the police station to cooperate and give our statements.

We were supposed to leave after that, but Mr. Smith wouldn’t let us go.

He had two demands: 1) Refund the house, 2) Compensate him for 200,000 USD in damages.

The 200,000 included renovation costs as well as emotional distress.

The refund was something we had no objections to—it was reasonable. The seller must give him a refund since it was a haunted house.

And as the intermediaries, we also had to return our commission.

But David refused to pay the 200,000 in damages, which was a considerable amount of money.

The police had completed the first round of investigation and initially ruled out suspicion on all of us, including Mr. Smith. So, the hidden corpse case had nothing to do with us anymore.

As for our dispute with Mr. Smith, that could only be resolved through legal channels.

After leaving the station, Mr. Smith was still cursing us:

“You heartless agents! I’m taking you to court tomorrow!”

As we watched him get into his car and drive away, David and I looked grim, chain-smoking one cigarette after another.

The refund wasn’t a huge loss for us, and even compensating a few thousand dollars wouldn’t be a big deal.
