Soulforger: Primordial
Chapter 61: Meilin's Choice

Chapter 61: Meilin's Choice

Engulfed in darkness, Meilin lay shrouded in the oppressive weight of the secluded cultivation chamber, her form marked and marred by scars and bandages. The potent smell of medicinal herbs and sharp salves filled the air, seemingly denser than the air she drew into her ruined lungs. The once comforting aura of the healing array had faded into an echo, leaving her body in a shivering state of cold fragility.

A groan echoed through the chamber, the ancient wooden door creaking open, disrupting the tranquility she’d labored to cultivate. Silence followed, but she wasn't alone - she could feel it. Her head turned towards the direction of the door, the muscles in her neck protesting.

“She is injured and weakening,” the voice of her attendant echoed from the hall, “and dying.” Was she speaking with the soulforger? The rhythm of an unfamiliar breath filled the room, yet something about it called out to her. It was him – Ahja Kai, the soulforger.

His presence ignited a storm of emotions. Every heartbeat resonated with relief, dread, and a hint of pride. She struggled to lift herself, her blind gaze attempting to meet his. Despite her pain, she clung to the knowledge of her achievement, having completed the impossible task he'd set before her.

She heard the soft hum of a spirit lantern being lit, its spectral light painting shadows on her mind's canvas. His footsteps echoed, each one reverberating within the chamber like the rhythmic beat of a dread-filled countdown. The sounds were more profound than she expected, weightier, and the final step was interrupted, catching unevenly on the stone floor.

Summoning the remnants of her strength, Meilin fought to greet him upright. Though her body was a shell of what it once was, her spirit remained unbroken, the soul of a cultivator unyielding. Her muscles screamed in protest as she pushed herself up, her wounds flaring in response.

The strain was too much, her neck struggling to hold up her head, and her world spun dangerously. She fought against the rising darkness, her breath hitching at the sound of her name.

"Meilin."

Kai's voice was wrought with a regret she hadn't expected and deeper, more mature sounding. His question filled the room, "Why did you do this?" The hoarse whisper echoed, the astonishment clear even to her blind senses.

"You asked me to," she replied, her voice wavering but defiant.

His rebuttal was immediate, "I didn't ask you to harm yourself."

"You asked me to refine the energy before you returned, so I did. I thought even if it harmed me, you would have some purpose for it," Her voice, soft and filled with a conviction that seemed to permeate the room.

The silence that followed was fraught with tension, her words lingering in the air between them. Kai's struggle was almost palpable to her, a conflict she hadn't foreseen. His initial intent to leave her behind, shattered by her faith in him, had led to this predicament. Her trust felt like a blade lodged within his heart.

Finally, his admission filled the room, "I...I didn't think you would take it this far."

"I've glimpsed who you really are. How could I not fight for this chance?" her words were simple but weighted with determination.

His silence was answer enough for her. The quiet room became a stage for confrontation, with the spirit lanterns casting long, ethereal shadows. His decision held her life in the balance, a thin thread he alone could sever or strengthen.

Then, with a heavy sigh, Kai made his choice. Kneeling beside her, he started, "I told you I would take you with me if you accomplished the task... and I will."

She felt a spark of hope ignited within her, quickly overshadowed by fear at the stern tone of his voice. "But to do so, I must share my blood essence with you. You are too gravely injured, and I have no other means to heal these injuries."

The weight of his confession hung heavy in the room – his offer, a testament to the direness of her situation. He paused, letting his words seep into her, the severity of his proposition dawning on her.

"You should know I've only shared my blood essence with one other." His confession caused her eyebrows to arch, yet she listened intently as he elaborated, "Sharing my blood essence led to creating a blood core within her. Now I can feel her location wherever she goes. I can not predict if or how this bond may evolve."

As he finished speaking, Meilin was left in silence, the full gravity of his words pressing on her. She was committed to following him, but the thought of him sharing such a rare gift overwhelmed her. Feeling unworthy, she whispered her objections.

"That is not for you to decide." His voice, unyielding, echoed through the chamber.

"If you believe you're not worthy, then strive to make yourself so," his voice was resolute. “Now decided. If you accept me as your master and will take my blood into your body, then open your mouth - I will do the rest.”

With these words, a brilliant ruby-red drop of his blood essence materialized, floating between them. Despite her fear and uncertainty, she firmed her resolve — her lips parting to receive from him. She felt the heat of the drop approach before passing between her lips, and teeth, and touching down on her tongue. It was spicy and salty and burned with the heat of a spiritual kind, fire spreading through her mouth before descending into her body.

A tidal wave of warmth permeated her being, seeping through her veins like molten silver, scorching yet reviving. Each beat of her heart seemed to pump this radiant energy throughout her body, healing her wounds from within, the sharpness of pain and soothing relief intertwining in an intimate dance.

Her eyes seemed to burn and reforge, the room melting into a blur before reforming with newfound clarity. She blinked at the distorted figure of Kai, his features a strange panorama before her enhanced vision. But the sight of him was fleeting as another power surge had her eyelids fluttering closed.

The transformation continued to bloom within her, reshaping her at a cellular level. Beneath her fingertips, she could feel the rough scabs of her once-burned skin crumble away, replaced by the silk-smooth surface of her new, immaculate skin. Her scalp tingled, the sensation like a million tiny pinpricks as her raven black hair loosened and fell away. Then came the birth of thick, white curls cascading from her scalp like a waterfall of moonlight, their texture like spun silk against her trembling hands.

And it didn't end there. The formation of two metallic nubs from her skull felt like ice and fire. They grew and spiraled into proud horns that gracefully arched forward from behind her ears, silver like moon-kissed steel. They framed her face, disappearing into the dense white mane that billowed around her.

Then there was the feeling of feathers sprouting from her back like an elegy of rebirth. They were connected to muscles that rippled powerfully against her shoulder blades, alien yet a part of her. It was an unfamiliar strength, an overwhelming force that had her rising on shaky legs, her wings growing in length and power, brushing against the cold stone walls of the chamber.

She turned her gaze behind her, watching the breathtaking span of her wings, their tips brushing the stone walls on either side. As they finished their growth, they folded behind her gracefully, draping like a cape of feathers, light yet commanding.

As Kai rose to his full height, his gaze studied Meilin with an intensity that made her shiver with apprehension and anticipation. The lineage of her mother’s side had awoken within her, lending her traits that would surely provoke envy among other cultivators.

“You’ve unlocked your mother’s bloodline traits,” he stated, a hint of pride in his eyes that made her heart flutter. “How do you feel?”

She stood tall before him, their eyes meeting on an equal plane now. The warmth of Kai's spiritual energy was coursing through her, a tide of vitality that sparked a feeling of invincibility. She flexed her hands, glancing at her flawless skin. A bubble of joy rose within her and she found herself grinning, her heart swelling with newfound strength and resilience.

“I feel... reborn,” Meiling quickly knelt and confessed, her voice filled with wonder. She tilted her head, catching Kai's gaze, curiosity dawning within her. I wonder if he always feels like this?

"You’ve changed too," she smiled, her hand unconsciously hovering over the concentration of warmth in her lower core. She could feel the formation of a new core as the warmth began concentrating there.

Kai chuckled, running a hand through his own transformed appearance. "Change is the one thing you can be sure of with me." He knelt opposite her, then his tone turned serious. "We're leaving Arcadia soon, but I need to finalize some matters with the City Lords first."

Her heart skipped a beat at the mention of the City Lords, their reputation of immense power well known among the citizens. “You mean the Lord Protector Azurewing and the others?" she inquired, a hint of anxiety creeping into her voice.

He nodded, confirming her fears. "We have certain... disagreements that need to be settled."

“Let me accompany you,” she offered without hesitation. She had said her goodbyes and packed her sparse belongings, ready to leave her old life behind. "I’m ready."

He paused, his amber eyes studying her. There was a flicker of uncertainty, a question she could only guess at. “We might not return to Arcadia for a long time," he warned.

“I have nothing here to tie me down," she said. "I can gather some supplies and be ready to leave with you.”

“Very well, tomorrow then," he relented with a sigh. Then, his gaze hardened. “Just know, they have displeased me. You may see an unfamiliar side to me if they disappoint me again."

She nodded. A chill ran down her spine at his dark tone. A sense of trepidation filled her as she wondered about the path she had chosen and about the true nature of the man she had chosen to follow.

Tomorrow her new life would begin.
