"What groups?" inquired Ahja Kai, golden amber eyes gleaming in the soft light. He was poised gracefully on the cold stone, his gray robe slightly battered, a silent testament to a night spent crammed inside a rock fissure.
"Definitely the Cloud Temple and the Eternal Night Temple, not forgetting the Radiant Dawn Monastery and the Heavenly Lotus Sect, among many others."
"But not the Lunar Temple?"
"The Lunar Temple doesn't reach the top eight powers of the thousand isles. We couldn't snub the appeals of the mightier sects, so it's unlikely we'd attempt to involve you," responded Ai, her long black hair pinned back, her gaze thoughtful, and a hint of concern flickering in her brown eyes. Kei Bao, tall and vivacious, hurriedly knelt beside her. Song and Yunfei followed suit.
"Now, that's useful intel," Kai replied, a sigh escaping his lips. His golden amber eyes flickered with consideration as he absorbed the information. "Things around here are going to get lively." He rose and ambled a short distance away, his mid-length thick black hair shifting slightly as he did. Raising his hand, he scrutinized it, flexing his fingers, his skin resembling smooth porcelain under the ambient light. His body had been tempered with the vital power of each core, and for the most part, it left him unchanged.
But then, a surge of black energy infiltrated his cells, merging into the second nucleus with the purifying white energy he had absorbed earlier. The transformation was ongoing, but he could sense something stirring within. A power was gathering, condensing inside his cells. To what end, he could only speculate.
"Things could become difficult for you, and I get why you'd wish to retreat," Kai began, spinning around to face Bao, the playful irreverence in her green eyes replaced by seriousness. "But you, Bao, should remain for a few days. Your cultivation isn't optimized for your innate physique. Let me assist you in rectifying it before it worsens." Bao's aura, although emerald green, was different than the vibrant spring green energy she cultivated. They appeared compatible, yet Kai knew the slight discrepancy would limit her growth.
"Innate physique," Bao echoed, her green eyes widening in surprise at the revelation.
Kai engaged his energy sight and scrutinized the four young cultivators. Song, her face partially obscured by a metal plate, glowed with a golden aura. Yet, her meridians were thin, the energy channels fragile; she needed guidance to fully awaken her latent potential.
Young Hanna Yunfei, the wind prodigy, appeared the closest to perfection among them. Still, her energy was unruly, independent, and unpredictable. Without control, her cultivation foundation would remain wanting.
Mu Ai, the dutiful leader, had made commendable progress. Yet, her body and meridians were marred with scars, a labyrinth of tissue damage hinting at past struggles. She needed assistance.
"Truthfully, your cultivations are lacking," Kai began, his tone solemn yet not accusatory. "All of you could use guidance. So let's set aside what you can offer me. I can provide value to you."
"Why would you assist us?" interjected Bao, her green eyes wide, her usually lively persona shaken by the earlier revelation of her innate physique.
Kai lowered himself, tenderly brushing the head of Relay. Though the spirit fox's fur appeared metallic gold, it was surprisingly soft to the touch. Relay, eyes half-closed, seemed to bask in the comforting touch.
"What's the point in having the capacity to help if you never exercise it?" Kai murmured the words, barely a whisper in the quiet of the cavern. "But no, that's not the entire reason." He repositioned himself against the carved rock wall, Relay hopping onto his lap as he continued stroking the creature. His gaze, however, remained fixed on the distant shadows.
"I'm so far from home; my friends and family are nothing but memories," he confessed, his voice betraying a note of melancholy. "I've lost so much," a light chuckle resonated in the silence, "I even look fondly on the trivial irritations of my past." A faint smile danced on his lips as memories of Dr. Resdi, with her constant challenging of his decisions, filled his mind. She, too, was missed.
Song glanced at Bao, but none of them uttered a word.
"I'm not unique in this experience; every successful cultivator witnesses their life's journey extend far beyond where their loved ones can accompany them. If you attain significant achievements, this will be your fate."
"You're not alone, Kai. I'm here," Relay's tiny voice interjected, offering Kai a moment of respite, a chance to gather his thoughts.
"I know," he resumed his absent stroking. "We're quite the duo, aren't we?" His gaze drifted over to the group of young cultivators, their exchanged glances heavy with unspoken understanding.
"As cultivators, you must have contemplated immortality, the idea of enduring for millennia. Perhaps you've considered the eventuality of outliving those you cherish in some distant future. But the loss comes much sooner than that."
"Song," Kai turned his gaze towards the silent cultivator, her face veiled behind a metallic plate. "Have you ever experienced the raw might of a thousand warriors pulsing through your veins? Or Ai," his eyes shifted to the reserved leader, "have you ever plunged so deep into the ocean's abyss that the creatures dwelling there know not the sun's light?"

The pair of cultivators exchanged glances, shaking their heads in unison.
"Bao, have you ever darted so swiftly that the friction of the air sets your garments aflame? Yunfie, have you ever soared so high that the breath of life thins into nothingness?" His golden amber eyes locked onto each of them in turn.
"We've experienced none of such feats," Bao voiced, her tone steadfast.
"No, I wouldn't suppose so. You've not tread upon the surface of the sun, nor witnessed the dawn of a unique life, nor rent the fundamental particles of existence asunder by sheer force of will. But imagine if you could." Kai gently placed Relay onto the ground, rising to his full height.
"Envision a world where your friends and family cannot partake in such extraordinary experiences. Where no amount of explanation or description could encapsulate the essence of your exhilarating moments. Imagine the solitude of never being able to share the peaks of your joy or your most profound discoveries with those dear to you."
Kai channeled the robust, primordial core within him, letting it radiate throughout his body, casting an ethereal golden glow. His robe began to smoke, the heat too intense. With a sense of urgency, Mu Ai tugged at Song and Bao's robes, drawing their attention to the spectacle.
Kai unfettered his soul's light, casting an intense radiance throughout the cultivation chamber. It was akin to the sun's brilliance in the zenith of day, his body a beacon of bright gold, permeating the room with its celestial light. Then, he pushed, flooding every cell of his being with prismatic golden energy, filling them to the brim.
He radiated an intense warmth that set his robe aflame, reducing it to a whirl of ashes, only to reveal yet more blinding golden illumination. The quartet of cultivators instinctively moved away, their backs meeting the cold walls of the chamber, but escape was not an option. The exit was obscured by Kai's luminescent form. They instinctively lifted their arms to shield their eyes from the spectacle.
"Consider their gaze," his voice resonated throughout the chamber, each word carrying a potent, resonating force reminiscent of the thunderous rush of a waterfall. "Day after day, as you ascend into a realm of power they cannot fathom until familiarity morphs into fear. Imagine the ones you cherish viewing you like you gaze upon me now."
And indeed, they were watching him, huddled on their knees, their hands casting futile shadows against the radiant onslaught. Their eyes, visible from beneath their makeshift shields, held him in their sights. Yunfei and Ai bore expressions etched in fear, but the faces of Bao and Song evidenced a different emotion. Could it be respect? Admiration? Kai found it hard to discern.
Kai summoned golden motes of energy, their tiny forms fluttering about him in a dance adapting to the space's thin atmosphere. He imbued them with his current knowledge, gleaned from his encounter with the tailor and the design he desired them to enact. The motes swirled around his form, solidifying into tangible cloth. The transformation resulted in a luxurious inner robe of luminous golden silk and a robust outer layer of charcoal gray.
Finally immune to his energy, he was freed from the constant worry of inadvertently damaging his attire. A satisfied smile graced his lips as he reveled in the reassuring feel of the newly formed fabric. At last, garments immune to my power.
He gently stemmed the flow of energy radiating from his body, guiding it back into his core. The brilliance that once dominated the room dimmed, returning to the quiet luminance of before. The air hung heavy, hot, and laden with the scent of smoke and the tang of ozone. The rock floor where he had stood glowed a molten red, mirroring his silhouette, while waves of heat radiated from the still-soft stone. Kai stepped out of the pool of liquefied rock, striding towards the center of the room.
"I perceive two routes laid before every cultivator," he began, settling into a kneel. "To surge forward, only to be either feared or revered or to linger behind, becoming the one who fears and reveres. Which path will you choose?" He waited, poised in anticipation.
"Quite the spectacle," Relay transmitted, padding over to join him. "I never pegged you for such a sentimentalist."
"Each cultivator strives, battles, claws their way for every fragment of power they can secure. The path ahead is alluring to all, but one's progression can only extend as far as their limitations allow. Talent, lineage, support, destiny - all are barriers to one's ascension," Ai advanced, beads of sweat trickling down her face in the oppressive heat.
Bao staggered forward, soaked with perspiration. "Song and I, we may not grasp the full meaning of your words nor fathom the vast expanse of your experiences. But given the choice, we would always elect to press onwards." The usually silent Song echoed her sentiment with a nod as she stepped beside her.
"We all would," Yunfie's voice rang out with certainty. "Every cultivator would."
"And would you still choose such a path," Kai challenged, "even if it meant becoming a figure of dread and reverence to those you hold dear?"
Yunfie averted her gaze, her face was unreadable to Kai. He gestured for the group to join him, patiently waiting as they gathered their composure before kneeling across from him.
"Bao, you asked why I would offer my assistance. The answer is simple: I refuse to be confined to either path. I will not resign to live a humble life in fear of others or surge ahead to a place where others cannot follow. Instead, I choose to tread this journey accompanied by others.
"I crave the shared delight of witnessing others marvel at the wonders that have captivated me. Life is an adventure best savored together in all its grandeur and mystery."
The four cultivators appeared unsettled, their bodies fidgeting with palpable unease. Breaking the silence, it was Yunfie who first found her voice.
"You wish to share your existence... with us?" She arched an eyebrow questioningly. "That sounds good?" She looked to the others.
"But what's the catch?" Ai's gaze bore into him, laden with suspicion.
A harsh, resonating clash echoed through the chamber, the sound of steel meeting stone. Kai was drawn to the source - a weighty steel plate adorned with cryptic etchings and fastened to leather straps lay discarded before Song. Free from her customary mask, Song's face revealed a slightly upturned nose, full lips, and skin as pale as alabaster, marred only by the indentations left by the oppressive weight of the mask.
With wide-eyed surprise, Bao wrapped her arm around her friend, offering silent support. Song parted her lips to speak.
