Chapter 2 - Allies

They walked through the door and on the other side was a meadow. Grass grew up to Quinn and Kiara's knees. The sun beamed down on them as they covered their faces until their eyes adjusted to the sun. The heat resonated across their skin.

“Did we escape?” Quinn questioned the sight in front of him. It seemed like they had made it outside. Somewhere deep down, Quinn could tell something was still wrong.

“No, we didn't.” Kiara said as she turned around and pointed at the door behind them. The door stood in the middle of the meadow as the grass blew in the wind around it. Quinn could still see the hallway connected to the door. It seemed this was just another room.

Quinn and Kiara didn't get a single chance to feel joy before realizing they were still in this depressing purgatory. Quinn sighed at the sight of the door.

“There is no escape in this mansion of Hell,” Kiara said with a depressed tone.

Quinn dropped to his knees, almost consumed by the grass. His hands fell to his lap.

Kiara watched as Quinn grabbed a handful of grass into his palm. He stared at it for a second before opening his hand. The wind picked up the grass and sent it flying into the air before softly landing back on the ground a distance away.

As Kiara was watching the falling grass, she scrunched her eyes and looked into the distance. There seemed to be an unfamiliar object.

“Are you seeing that as well?” Kiara motioned for Quinn to look.

Quinn stood up from the grass and looked into the distance. His eyes were attacked by the blinding sunlight, but he was able to look past it just long enough to see what appeared to be a hand sticking up from the grass.

“Is that what I think it is?” Quinn asked Kiara. She walked a few steps closer to Quinn, “Yeah I think it is.”

“Do you think that it is another person?” Quinn continued to watch as the hand was unmoving.

“We won't know until we go check it out.” Kiara began walking towards the direction of the hand. Quinn quickly followed behind her.

The tall warm grass rubbed against their legs as they walked. It felt slightly ticklish to Quinn. Luckily he wasn't wearing shorts or the walk would be much more torturous.

Quinn watched the girl in front of him as he walked. He had only met this girl ten minutes ago and still didn't know if he could completely trust her.

She did have a knife to my throat and could have killed me, but that doesn't completely single her out as trustworthy. I will just keep an eye on her to make sure nothing bad happens.

After walking a couple hundred meters, Quinn and Kiara arrived at the location where they spotted the hand.

“Do you see it?” Quinn asked as he scanned the tall grass.

“No, I don't…” Just as Kiara said that, her foot bumped into the side of a young man laying on the ground. He looked to be in his early twenties. His hair was an unnatural silver and his face had nice chiseled features. “I found something. It's a man.” Quinn quickly rushed over to Kiaras location.

After arriving, they both stared at the unconscious man. His arm was no longer reaching for the sky but was instead laying down at his side.

The man slowly opened his eyes, allowing the bright sun to enter them. His dark brown eyes turned a light hazel as the sun reflected off of them. The first thing he saw standing above him was two unfamiliar figures. Quinn thought the man would freak out after seeing them, but instead of freaking out, he sat up from the ground and looked at his surroundings, taking in the atmosphere.

Quinn and Kiara took a step back. They did this so they wouldn't scare the man, but also so they were not in any danger from the man attacking.

The man leaned forward and used his arms to push himself up. After standing up off the ground, he turned around and looked at the two figures standing behind him. Quinn had become cautious as he watched the man’s movements to see what he would do.

The man looked towards Quinn. At first, he didn't say anything, but after a few seconds he tilted his head and spoke, “Umm… where am I?”

With caution, Quinn spoke, “You're in a mansion.” The man turned around and looked at the grass moving behind him. He then turned back around, “This doesn't look like any mansion I have heard of.”

The man took a step towards Quinn. Quinn was preparing for a fight, but watched as the man only held out his hand and smiled, “My name is Alec. It's nice to meet you both.”

Quinn hesitantly took Alec's' hand and shook it. Quinn began to make the assumption that this man was just like him and would be of no harm, so he calmed down.

Kiara took a step towards them, “What exactly do you remember?”

Alec rubbed his chin as he tried to think, “Now that you mention it, I don't have any memories. I don't even remember how I got here.”

He really is the same as us. Quinn analyzed the man before speaking, “Does your head hurt?”

“No, my head feels fine. By any chance, can you guys tell me what's going on here?”

Quinn and Kiara looked at each other before explaining to Alec what was happening. They mentioned the mansion of infinite rooms and how they could find a way out. Quinn thought he was going to go into a panic, but instead he just sat there calmly, listening to what they had to say.

“Oh, so that's what's happening. I guess we're going to have to look for a way out then.” Quinn and Kiara were dumbfounded by his reaction. They imagined he would have been at least a bit worried, but he seemed to be taking the situation very calmly.

What is wrong with this guy? Did he hit his head before coming to this mansion? Quinn couldn't think of a reason Alec would be like this, so he stopped trying.

“Are you guys a group? Can I join?” Alec looked at them and smiled.

Kiara turned to look at Quinn then faced back towards Alec, “Give us just a second to discuss.” Quinn and Kiara took a few steps away, leaning in close to each other so Alec couldn't hear them, “What do you think, do you think he should tag along?”

Quinn thought for a second, “It doesn't look like he’ll cause us any harm, but he does seem to have a few screws loose in the head.” They both turned to look back at Alec. A smile was etched across his face, “I think it will be fine as long as we keep an eye on him.”

“I agree.” They both nodded in agreement and then walked back over to Alec, “We have decided that you can join us.”

“Great! So… where do we go from here?” Alec said as he looked around the field. The only door in sight was the one Kiara and Quinn had just arrived from, but since there was no other way for them to go back there, they decided it would be best to find somewhere else to leave.

“I think we should just start walking and hope we come across another door. There isn't much else we can do besides that.” Quinn spoke his mind and Kiara nodded in agreement. They walked through the field, slowly making their way in the opposite direction of where they had come from.

Quinn walked beside Kiara while Alec walked in front of them. Kiara sighed, “To think, fifteen minutes ago I was all alone, and now I have two other people with me. I didn't think anyone else was in this place. I thought I was the only one. I’m glad I'm not.”

Quinn looked at Kiara, “With luck, we will be able to find a way out of this place.”

“I think it will take more than luck to get out of this place.” Quinn nodded his head in agreement.

They continued walking through the endless meadow. An hour passed and they still haven't found any signs of a door. Although time was passing, the sun still hasn't moved from its position in the sky. It just sat there shining brightly above them.

They were beginning to grow impatient the more they walked. To pass the time, they made small conversation. Alec had an ecstatic tone to him as they would talk. Quinn thought of him as curious as a cat and as hyper as a puppy. He always wore a smile and would bounce around checking out the different blades of grass. Neither Quinn nor Kiara could understand why he acted this way.

While Alec was roaming around behind Quinn and Kiara, Quinn thought this would be the perfect time to begin asking questions.

He looked towards Kiara, her eyes stared straight into the space in front of her. She looked to be in a daze, “You said you woke up in this mansion a few days ago. What did you go through while you were here?”

Kiara seemed to be shocked back to reality after hearing Quinn's voice. She looked at Quinn and then looked down trying to grasp her thoughts, “Not much happened. I woke up in one of the hallways with a headache and no memory of what happened to me before that. After grasping the situation I decided to walk through the halls and rooms looking for a way out.”

“How many other rooms besides this one have you seen that were this elaborate?”

“None, this is the first time I've seen anything like this. All the rooms I've seen up to this point were just normal rooms, besides the fact they were fancier than a normal bedroom. The gold-handled wooden drawers and the beautiful carpets. The fancy velvet beds and the red and gold curtains that lead to windows with nothing on the other side. I have never seen anything like it.”

“Do you have any ideas as to who owns this mansion?” This is the question Quinn wanted to know most. If they could find the owner of this mansion then they might be able to leave. That is, if this mansion even has an owner.

Quinn had theorized as they were walking how this mansion works. It defies the laws of the world and he had never seen anything like it. There was a chance that this mansion didn't even have an owner. The only reason Quinn still believed it did was because of the photos hanging by the staircase when he woke up. It was photos of an entire family line.

Quinn believed that one of them was the owner of this mansion. And what was with the picture with the face ripped off the photo. The name of the person in that photo was Nile Lazareth. Why was only his photo ripped?

Quinn had many questions but he knew Kiara would not know them. Still, he hoped she would have just a sliver of information. If she did, maybe they would have hope of finding the owner.

“I have no idea as to who the owner is. I haven't even found any hints as to who it could be.” Quinn was disappointed, but it was as he expected.

“I think I might have an idea as to the name of the mansion owner”

“Really!? What's his name? How do you know?” Kiara's voice got a bit excited. This gave her a little bit of hope for escaping.

“When I woke up I saw a bunch of pictures hanging up on a wall next to a staircase. They were drawings of different people, all of them with a name under their photo. They all had the same last name, Lazareth. At the very end, a photo was hung up but the face of the photo was ripped off. The name for the man in that photo was Nile Lazareth. I think he might be the one who has trapped us in here.”

“Nile Lazareth you say?” Alec ran up behind them with a handful of grass. He threw it in the air and watched as it floated away, “Sorry, I was trying not to eavesdrop but you guys started getting loud. So Nile is the man who stuck us in this weird mansion?”

“That is my best guess.” Quinn said with an uncertain tone, “Although I don't have any proof to base it off of.”

“Your guess is better than any.” Kiara said.

They continued walking through the meadow for another thirty minutes before Quinn began to get exhausted.

“This is weird, I've suddenly started to feel very fatigued.”

“Same, this is unnatural. I know the sun is hot, but it shouldn't have had any serious effects on us.” Kiara said drearily. The fatigue could be seen in her now baggy eyes.

While Quinn was walking, he suddenly stumbled and fell on one knee.

Why are we beginning to feel so tired all of a sudden? It can't be the heat because it isn't that warm. Maybe it's this room? Has it been doing something to us this entire time? And what about Alec, is he feeling these affects as well?

Quinn turned to look at how Alec was doing. Alec no longer had a smile on his face, but instead looked tired and weak just like Kiara and Quinn.

This is definitely unnatural. It isn't likely that all of us start feeling the effects all at the same time. That must mean something is affecting us. Something in this room is causing us to lose our energy!

Quinn turned once again towards Alec and saw him pointing into the distance, “Look, it's another door!”

Quinn and Kiara turned to look where Alec was pointing. He was right. Standing in the middle of the field was a door they had never seen before. It was similar to the door they had seen before but the engravings were different.

“Quick, let's run to the door before we can't walk anymore.” Quinn began to run after saying this, trying to use whatever energy he had left to make it to the door.

They were about one hundred meters from the door before Quinn fell down in the grass. His head hit the ground as he fell and his mind began to grow dizzy from the impact. Still, he stood up quickly and continued running behind Alec and Kiara. Finally, Kiara made it to the door first. Alec was close behind her and Quinn was right behind him.

Once they all were at the door. Kiara opened it up and they all got sucked in by an unknown force. Everything went black and Quinn could no longer think.
