Soul of a Human
Chapter 19

Chapter 19

Mor went back to his room, after talking to Orth and Saphine, as it was getting late.

°So what do you know of the ice-kin?° The human asked.

°Well, what everyone knows, they are barbarians, who don´t have any talent for magic, instead, they fight with their bodies. Therefore they are blessed with really strong muscles, though knowing, what I know now, I think they may be training hard, in addition to being just strong.° Mor answered.

°I´m really excited to meet one!° The human said and Mor grimaced. °What?° The human asked.

°I´m not sure I want to, they sound scary.° Mor said.

°Yeah, but think about it, aren´t the different kin all coming from the same race? A race that used magic, to rise to the top of the world, and subsequently almost destroying themselves with it, if we can believe what the history class told us.° The human said, and Mor thought over this statement.

°True enough, kin history is normally pretty precise, but they probably gave up on their magic ancestry to get physically stronger.° Mor said, but the human was not convinced.

°Maybe, they just don´t show off their magic capabilities, and therefore being seen as mindless brutes?° The human offered and Mor shrugged.

°It´s possible, but why would they do something like that?° He asked.

°I can´t say, but maybe they want to keep this a secret weapon, or whoever talked to them, didn´t care enough to ask?° The human said.

°Well, it doesn´t matter right now, he will be coming, and we will see.° Mor answered and the human agreed.

°We also have another problem, we need to take care of.° The human said and Mor let out a sigh.

°You´re talking about Ranbor...° Mor said.

°Yes, I think as long as the lady teacher is not here, we should not be out and about alone, and stick to Orth or maybe Clare, so he doesn´t have an opening to do anything to us without someone else as a witness. So for now, solo training outside of our room should be postponed, no more running and no using the magic training space alone.° The human said.

°That sounds, good. Finally, I can slack a bit.° Mor jocked, but was also a bit relieved.

°Don´t be so relieved! We will substitute running for something else. Time to dust off the intensive training, minus the running.° The human said and Mor shuddered at that.

°Please, not again! What you describe as intensive training is torture!° Mor complained but the human just huffed.

°Shouldn´t have been that relieved then, about skipping training.° They said.

°Sometimes, I hate you...° Mor said, and the human chuckled at that.

°That´s the spirit son.° The human said.

°Shut it...° Mor answered huffy.

The next morning, Mor went to the mess hall, keeping watch if, Ranbor would try something. This time it seemed, he wouldn´t though, so Mor made it without incident.

°Let´s wait here for Orth or Clare, and ask them to stick with us today.° The human said.

°Yeah, at least while we´re having a break, and after class. While the lessons are going on, I don´t think he would try anything, because there are too many witnesses.° Mor said.

While they were eating, they first spotted Clare and Mor waved her over. "Good morning, Clare." Mor greeted her and she smiled at him.

Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation.

"Good morning Mor." She said, sitting down with him.

"Can I ask you a favor, Clare?" Mor started and she raised an eyebrow at that question.

"Sure, what can I help you with?" She asked.

"Well, Ranbor has it out for me again, and I need someone to stay with me, so he can´t get me on my own. At least until Miss Amethyne returns." Mor said and Clare got thoughtful.

"What´s in it for me?" She asked him.

°Uh, what now? This is unexpected.° Mor asked the human.

°Well, just ask her what she wants." The human answered snickering.

"What would you like?" Mor asked Clare.

"Let´s see, how about, for now, you just owe me a favor?" She told him smiling.

"A favor?" Mor asked.

°Yeah, sounds good, just agree. Don´t think too hard about it.° The human said.

"Yes, don´t worry I won´t ask of anything you can´t do," Clare told Mor.

"I don´t know, but well sure. I owe you a favor." Mor said, and Clare smiled brightly.

"Then I will stick with you today." She said.

After they both finished eating, they went to their lessons, Clare clinging to Mors' arm.

"You don´t need to stick that close to me," Mor said, and Clare looked up at him, still clinging on.

"I do have to! What if we get separated? Then I would break my promise" She insisted.

°Let her.° The human said, between fits of snickering.

"But look, right now there is no danger of us getting separated, there are not that many others here?" Mor went on.

°Dense like a piece of Osmium.° The human said disappointed.

°What´s Osmium?° Mor asked and the human let out a sigh.

°The most dense material from earth.° They answered.

°And why am I "dense" like that now? I don´t get what you want to say.° Mor asked confused.

°Sorry, my fault, you are even denser than Osmium...° The human answered and Mor was now even more confused.

"You can never be careful enough if Ranbor is after you," Clare said, clinging a bit closer and Mor shrugged, while the human was laughing at something again.

Like this they spend the whole day, Clare almost always clinging to Mor, and somehow this strange pair got some for Mor unidentifiably looks, from nearby other students. Which in turn cracked the human up even more.

Ranbor waited for his chance, but it seems it would not come as this traitorous bitch was hanging always on that peasant. He must have blackmailed her somehow because no noble would stay that close to any peasant. True she was not a high noble like himself, but still, she should have some more pride, this in turn made him even more furious. Somehow sometime, this bastard will pay for everything.

Like this Mor and Clare spend three more days, sometimes noticing a fuming Rambor in the corner of their eyes, but at least he wasn´t trying anything. Once Orth asked them what they were doing, and giving Mor a friendly clap on his shoulder and laughing, when they answered him.

Until Miss Amethyne finally came back and another student gathering was called by the headmaster. The thing that confused Mor, was that somehow Clare was unhappy about that and pouting for some reason, asking the human about it he only got laughter as an answer. Sometimes, the human was less than helpful.
