Epilogue

Epilogue

As the fiery remnants of the building flickered in the distance, Kai and Minseo found themselves standing on a secluded hill, overlooking the chaos they had left behind. The world was quiet, save for the crackling sounds of fire and the distant wails of sirens, a haunting melody that reverberated through the stillness of the night.

Kai held the Ledger tightly in his hands, its leather cover charred and singed, but still intact. Minseo stood beside him, her eyes reflecting a mixture of fear, sorrow, and determination. The weight of everything they had experienced pressed heavily on them, the burdens of the past lingering like shadows.

“What do we do now?” Minseo asked, her voice barely a whisper, as if speaking too loudly would shatter the fragile moment they shared.

Kai glanced down at the Ledger, memories flooding his mind—the power it had promised, the lives it had taken, the darkness it had unleashed. “We can’t let it hurt anyone else,” he replied, his voice steady but filled with an underlying sadness. “It’s time to end this for good.”

Minseo looked at him, searching his face for reassurance. “You really think this is the only way?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly. “We could… we could try to find another way. Maybe give it to someone who can handle it.”

“No,” Kai interrupted, his gaze unwavering. “It doesn’t work like that. We both know the truth. The Ledger is a curse, and the longer it exists, the more lives it will destroy. Sato was just the beginning.” He paused, his breath hitching in his throat. “I can’t keep running from it. I can’t keep fighting.”

Minseo swallowed hard, tears brimming in her eyes. “But Kai… what if there’s still hope? What if we could live normal lives, free from all this?”

“Normal?” Kai scoffed, shaking his head. “After everything we’ve done? After everything we’ve lost?” He looked out over the horizon, the distant glow of the burning building casting flickering shadows on his face. “I can’t go back to a normal life. I don’t think I even want to.”

She stepped closer, her hand reaching out to touch his arm. “You’re not alone, you know. I’m here with you. We can face whatever comes next together.”

Kai turned to her, his heart aching at the sight of her hopeful expression. “Minseo, I can’t let you get hurt because of me. Not again. Not after everything we’ve been through. If we burn this… it has to be us too. It’s the only way to ensure it’s truly gone.”

“What do you mean?” she asked, confusion flickering across her features.

Kai took a deep breath, steeling himself for the words he needed to say. “If we destroy the Ledger, it means we destroy its power, but it also means that we’re free from its pull. We won’t have to live in fear anymore.” He looked deep into her eyes, searching for understanding. “We won’t have to run. We can finally be at peace.”

Tears streamed down Minseo’s face as she realized the gravity of what he was saying. “Kai, no… there has to be another way.” She stepped back, shaking her head in denial. “You can’t seriously think this is the only choice we have.”

Kai reached out, cupping her face in his hands, forcing her to meet his gaze. “I’ve thought about this, Minseo. I really have. This Ledger… it’s taken too much from us. We have to end it together. No more fear, no more pain. Just… peace.”

Minseo’s breath hitched, her heart racing as she tried to process his words. “But… I don’t want to die. I want to live, Kai. I want to live with you, free from all this. We can find a way. Please.”

“I don’t want to die either,” Kai said, his voice cracking. “But living in this world, haunted by what we’ve done, by the Ledger’s darkness? I can’t. And I won’t let you go through that.” He wiped the tears from her cheeks, his heart breaking at the thought of leaving her behind. “You deserve more than this life.”

Minseo trembled, her voice shaking. “Kai… I can’t lose you. Not like this.”

Kai pulled her into an embrace, holding her tightly as the warmth of their connection spread through him. “You won’t lose me. We’ll be together. Always.”

He stepped back, his heart pounding in his chest as he moved to the edge of the hill, where a small fire pit awaited them. He placed the Ledger in the center, taking a moment to let the weight of the decision settle in. With trembling hands, he struck a match and lit the edges of the Ledger. The flames licked at the cover, consuming it slowly, a fiery testament to everything they had endured.

As the Ledger burned, the heat radiated toward them, illuminating the night sky. Kai turned back to Minseo, who was watching with wide, fearful eyes. “It’s time to let go,” he said softly, taking her hands in his. “Together.”

“Together,” she echoed, her voice barely above a whisper.

Kai took a deep breath, feeling the fire’s warmth wash over him. “One last moment, okay?” he said, pulling her close again. “I want to remember this… us.”

Minseo nodded, tears streaming down her face as she clung to him. “I don’t want to be afraid anymore, Kai. I want to be free.”

“Then let’s be free,” he whispered, leaning down to kiss her gently, a final act of love and defiance against the darkness that had taken so much from them.

As they kissed, the flames consumed the Ledger, its pages curling and blackening, reducing it to ash. And with it, they both felt the weight of their past lifting, the burdens of their choices fading away.

When they finally pulled apart, they stood facing each other, hands still intertwined, hearts racing. “Are you ready?” Kai asked, his voice thick with emotion.

Minseo nodded, determination shining in her tear-filled eyes. “I’m ready.”

With that, they took a step back from the fire, hand in hand. Kai closed his eyes, taking a deep breath as he whispered a final goodbye to everything that had haunted them. And together, they took one last leap into the unknown.

In that moment, as the fire crackled behind them and the world faded away, they felt an overwhelming sense of peace. They were free from the Ledger, free from the pain, and free from the fear that had shackled them for so long.

And as they let go of each other’s hands, they knew they would face whatever came next, together, in whatever form it took.

The fire burned brightly behind them, a testament to their choice, to their sacrifice, and to the hope of a new beginning, however uncertain it may be. In their hearts, they knew they would always be together, bound by love, even beyond the end.
