Chapter 5: Wild hunt in West Virginia

We reached a small, abandoned coal mine in West Virginia. Due to an explosion that occurred in the nineteen hundreds, no one dares to come here because of that reason.

The Mothman was lasted seen in the old coal house.

Our supervisor, Gun-wo, used the same portal-creating technique as Hinata to transport us here, "Listen up kids, this is our first official mission as a team. I want you to know that I won't be overly strict with any of you. From tomorrow onwards I will be fulfilling my role as the supervisor and critically evaluate each of your performances. I'm not permitted to intervene, so you must depend on one another. You will be assessed in three categories: teamwork, kills, and tactics, with each category offering up to three stars. Accumulate enough points, and you'll have the chance to rank up later on. Happy hunting fellow hunters." he explained, making a gesture with his hands which case a black fog to appeared, covering the entire top and outside of the town.

"The Mothman is hidden somewhere in that house. Whatever happens, don't run away." He said as he walked out the fog.

I stood there in confusion, "What the hell is this?" I asked.

Ren approached the fog and pressed his hand against it. "This is a barrier spell known as Whisper in the Fog. It can trap monsters ranging from A-rank to R-rank. The best part is that any destruction occurring inside will not be visible once the fog disappears." he explained.

How fascinating, "I see, I am kind of relief to hear that. Well, were should we start looking-" just then we heard a loud growl coming from inside the house.

I was already griping my dagger as I looked in that direction for the monster.

The three of us stood close together, vigilant for any sign of movement. "Should we split up?" Gabrielle asked.

"No, the three of us should attack it simultaneously as soon as we locate it. Remember, the essence of teamwork is jumping together." Ren stated.

It was faint, but I could see a woman staring at us from inside the house. "Guys, there's a woman inside." I said, about to move closer when Gabrielle grabbed my robe.

"Wait, let me test something." She said walking in front of me in the direction of the house.

Her body radiated a bright red aura as she began to dribble the ball in the air, saying, "Utility mode: Striker." With those words, she tapped the ball into the air, vanishing forward in the air and then delivered a kick that sent the ball soaring like a rocket toward the building.

I actually thought Gabrielle killed that woman, "That is a bit harsh." I said only seconds later the monster in question burst through the window tossing a dead woman body away.

The Mothman, in all its glory, released a loud scream before taking flight. Gabrielle clapped her hands and the ball reappeared at her feet. "I will send it down," she declared. With another strong kick, she blasted the Mothman's right wing.

Due to it missing one of its wings, the mothman crashed through the building.

Ren asked, "Xavier, are you okay with attacking while I cover you?"

I pulled my knife out of belt, into my right hand and spun it, "Sure thing." As I was about to dash off, I sensed Ren tracing something on my back with his fingers. "You should move faster now," he said.

I feel lighter than usual. When I ran, I was astounded by my body's capabilities. I have always been naturally fast, but this sensation was different.

I dolphin dive through the broken window and searched for the Mothman.

Immediately Lezian came out and blocked the Mothman sneak attack from above, "Crafty little pest." I spun around and performed a roundhouse which had enough force to send it flying towards a wall.

I'm starting to love this newly found power.

I walked slowly towards it, recalling my mother's words from five years ago, "If you don't behave, a monster will eat you." I paused, allowing Lezian to wrap around me.

"You can't do that because you lack motivation. Perhaps this encounter will make you realize that there are far more dangerous monsters out there." I said with a condescending smile.

The beast let out a roar, regained its footing, and lunged at me.

Aided by Gabrielle kicking another high-power soccer ball against it face. The creature got stunned by the attack, lost its balance and drop to its knees.

Lezian went and wrapped themselves around the Mothman. To which I used the opportunity to dash towards it and bash my knee against its face. Resulting to my new clothes becoming messy.

I placed my knife back in my belt and cracked my knuckles while breathing in and out.

Followed by me punching it over and over, then Lezian unwrapped itself and immediately I kicked the beast out of the house.

Ren materialized behind me, saying, "I'm the support, so I will be handling the buffing." He traced a symbol on my back once more, and I felt my body become significantly tougher.

The Mothman attempted to flee, but its efforts were futile as Gabrielle had just obliterated its remaining wing, making it flightless.

"Lezian, assist me." I ran straight towards the beast with my family right behind me.

Just before I could slide between its legs, "HEADER!" Gabrielle kicked another soccer ball which made an impact against it head. Which caused it to be stunned yet again.

Once I slide through its legs, I was already twirling my blade to prepare for a strike.

Lezian caused a distraction by blasting the ground which caused a smokescreen.

The moment the Mothman turn around, I was already set in motion.

My blade made contact with its chest, next was four rapid stabs against the stomach and finally was the blade being jammed in its throat.

"XAVIER! ARE YOU OKAY!" Shouted Ren.

Once the cloud cleared, all you see was me starting on the dead monster back with my familiar's arms wrapped around me.

The two pair begun to celebrate after our first successful hunt.

As the fog lifted, Gun-wo approached us, clapping his hands. "Excellent work, everyone. I have learned much about each of you and have tallied your points. Additionally, I've been authorized to assign new ranks that truly reflect your talents." he announced.

He materialized before Gabrielle and announced, "You have accumulated a total of nine points, and your new rank is B." Overwhelmed, Gabrielle began to weep tears of joy.

He stepped in front of Ren and declared, "You scored six points. You'll remain a C rank." Ren was disappointed, leaving him vulnerable to Gabrielle's merciless teasing.

I was last one.

Gun-wo chose to walk towards me, stopping right in front of me. "You scored a perfect ten... however, I simply don't like outsiders. You are an E-rank." he said, lowering his head to my face with an irritating smile.
