The story of Belkai Androva takes place in the year 1182 of Emancipation on the continent of Persamin. A quick note of the historical background may be of help.
A millennium before Belkai's story the continent was ruled by the Palians, an empire from across the ocean that conquered Persamin and ruled with an iron fist for three centuries. The empire crumbled seemingly overnight, struck by divine fury in a cataclysm whose nature was lost to history. Even amongst the elves, few if any remain from those days. The rare survivor does not speak of those times.
The next millennium saw a bitter contest for the continent which resulted in a small cluster of kingdoms in the central regions. An unsteady peace existed, broken only by small wars between the elven Aliri Empire and the human kingdom of Svaleta (pronounced 'Shvaleta'). Outside this region are the wildlands, long since abandoned to the creatures and bandits that fight for survival. The distant coasts have long been considered cursed and any daring adventurers who sought them out have never returned.

'Sons of Retribution' takes place in two time periods. The bulk of the story plays out in the year 1182 of Emancipation, carrying on immediately from the end of 'Daughter of the Wind'. A second plot line runs through the final years of the Palian Empire on the continent. Through it all, the fate of the continent rests on the shoulders of a war-weary mage named Belkai and Adrianna, a mysterious killer whose eyes are set on the destruction of the one who has defied the gods and stands condemned.
