Chapter 5: A Meeting Of Two Worlds

Tom reappeared outside his house. It was late in the morning. He walked inside while he pulled off pieces of his armour, letting each of them plop to the floor. Each piece felt so heavy to him. Magical Repair would have to wait. Once he got the kitchen, he collapsed onto the ground. While he was healed, the mental exhaustion from the mission left him drained of everything. He was happy, though. That empty feeling he felt for so long was gone. Today he saved many lives and he didn't care if anyone knew. He knew, and that's all that mattered.

An issue had arisen during that mission that Tom knew he needed to address. The people wanted answers about what is happening to the world. At this point, he was close to translating half of the book A Brief History of Xoth. His plan was to translate both the history book and the bestiary. Also, to help out people who would be accessing the SYSTEM in a year, he was writing his own book that gave people information and tips about the SYSTEM.

'No training today,' he declared. Tom didn't think he had anything left in him to give to do anymore training. 'Translation day today. Inventory.'

'And now to examine my armour and weapon reward.'

Tom pulled out the chainmail gloves from his Inventory. The gloves were completely covered in chain-linked metal. Nothing really different than what had appeared in medieval times of humanity. The inside of the gloves were softened brown leather.

'Identify.'

Tom placed the gloves back in his Inventory and pulled out the spear. The spear was as long as Tom was tall. The spear tip consisted of three blades that were parallel to each other and held together by a stretch of metal at the bottom that ran perpendicular to the blades. Each blade was blue in colour and was wave-like in design to look like flowing water.

"We finally have a lead, Mister President," Baker declared as he entered the office. He handed a report to Forest. "The one hundredth person."

"What can you tell me?" Forest asked as he opened the report.

Baker sat down. "The monster attack yesterday in Madrid. There was a police officer that survived. He was questioned by his superiors and Interpol. Here."

Baker handed Forest a scroll-like cylinder. Forest pulled out a thin transparent sheet from the cylinder device. The sheet remain attached to the cylinder. Forest placed the sheet horizontally on his desk. He pressed a display button in the bottom right corner. Video started and was security footage of a man in a police uniform in an interrogation room. The man looked irritated.

The door to the interrogation room opened up and two men walked in. One man was dressed in a black suit with a navy blue tie. The other was dressed in beige slacks and a white dress shirt with a red tie. Vega placed his hands on the table in front of him.

"Are you two here to make fun of me as well?" Vega asked.

"No," the man in the black suit replied plainly. "I'm Officer Harris of Interpol and this is Agent Hackerson from the CIA. Do you know how to speak English?"

"Bits and pieces," Vega replied.

Harris passed him an ear piece. "This will translate his words for you."

Vega placed the ear piece in his left ear.

The two men sat down at the table across from him. Each of them brought out a small device that Vega assumed recorded their conversation. "We want you to tell us what happened after the police defense failed," Hackerson finally chipped in.

"I've tried telling my superiors but they just laughed," Vega replied.

"We won't."

"Alright, alright. We found that the slimes were impervious to bullets."

"Slimes?" Harris repeated.

"It's what the man in the white cloak called them."

"Continue."

"When we found that the slimes were immune to our bullets, panic erupted among the police and civilians. Those slimes started to eat everyone they could catch. I'm sorry to say that I tried to hide in a warehouse." Vega's fists clenched. "I know I should have tried to help the civilians but I watched my best friend dissolve right in front of me. You have any idea what it's like to watch a man dissolve all the way to the bone? I went to his goddamn wedding."

Tears came to his eyes. Harris patted his shoulder. "Take your time."

"Sorry," he choked as he wiped away his tears. "The warehouse wasn't safe. One of those slimes was in there and I was attacked. It ate my right leg up to the knee."

Hackerson leaned to the side to look at his right leg and saw it still there.

Vega saw Hackerson's look. "I'm getting there! I thought I was going to die then and there, but then he came."

"The man in the white cloak?" Harris said.

Vega nodded. "He jumped in and bashed the slime several times with a piece of rebar that was on fire. That was the first slime I saw killed. By the time the slime was killed though, my leg was already gone." Vega stopped telling his story.

"Something wrong?"

"At this point, it... becomes crazy. But I swear to you and God, it's the truth."

"We're not here to judge, Mister Vega."

"The man's held out his hand and said, 'heal'. My leg then grew back. Many don't believe it, but look!" Vega pulled up his damaged pant leg to show his full leg. "Look at the different colours of my skin. My skin is darker above the point where the slime ate. My lower leg is new so it's noticeable lighter."

"Interesting. Assuming you’re telling the truth-"

"I am," Vega affirmed.

"How was this man able to do it?"

"Magic."

"Magic?"

"The man said he used magic to heal me. I even saw him shoot lightning out of his hand to light a torch. I know that sounds crazy, but remember that our fair city was attacked by slime monsters. Magic isn't that far-fetched."

"What happened next?"

"I asked who the man was and he told me he was a survivor of last week's monster attacks."

"Did you manage to see what the man looks like?" Hackerson asked.

"I tried to look at his face but I couldn't see it. It was just darkness."

"If you're trying to protect this man-"

"I'm not, I'm not. I don't know how but he had his face disguised in shadows no matter the lighting. So this man told me that these slimes were immune to physical attacks but were extra weak to fire."

"Now, did he speak your language?"

"Yes."

"Do you believe he's from the city?"

"No, definitely not."

"Why's that?"

"His accent. I've met a lot of tourists. Even if they can speak the language, they still can't change the accent. It was American or Canadian. No, Canadian. Met too many Canadians to not know the accent."

"Do you believe he caused the attack?" Harris asked.

"No! No he didn't."

"Then how was he able to get there so fast if he wasn't a resident of Madrid?"

"My story has an explanation," Vega assured them. "I know how."

"Then please continue."

"The man told me to run and I did. I made it a couple blocks before a saw a large fiery explosion erupt. It was then I felt guilty for running and leaving the man to fight the slimes alone. So I went back. On my way there, I saw all the slimes in the area combine to create that giant monster everyone on the news is talking about."

"That's how that monster came to be?"

"Yeah. I saw the man get slammed by the tentacle of the monster and launched him right into a brick building. I went to him and found him severely injured. He was impaled through the chest by some rebar. I pulled him off of rebar and tried to get him out of there, but he refused. He was planning to kill the slime or die trying. He had this energy come from him. This determination. The man healed himself and then he came up with a plan. He would distract the monster while I drove a gasoline truck into the monster. I jumped out of the gasoline truck as it ran towards the slime and I ran out of there to get out of the explosion radius. The cloaked man made an electricity attack and set off the truck. The other cars inside the slime followed and the monster was defeated. I came back to check on the hero and found him unharmed. He then gave me a message."

"And what was the message?" Hackerson asked.

"He warned that there's going to be more monster attacks. The man further said that he's trying to compile information about what is happening and would release it as soon as it was done. He then said 'fast travel home' and he vanished. Teleported. That is how that man got to Madrid so fast."

"Is this everything?"

"Yes. That is everything that has happened."

The two men in suits got up to leave.

"What are you people going to do to that man if you find him?"

"It depends how cooperative he is. We would like to work with him."

"I believe he will help, if you ask," Vega said. "He's a really nice guy."

The video then ended. Forest sighed as he closed the scroll. "Magic. This just has to happen during my administration."

"Are we going to be sharing this information as well?"

Forest leaned back in his chair. "I made a promise to the other leaders that we would share information concerning these monsters. The other leaders have returned the favour in kind. This video confirms our theory of the survivor and finally gives us the opportunity to find out what is really going on. This person in the cloak seems to want to help us, so we should be thankful for small mercies. I want him found ASAP. Dedicate all available resources to finding him."

"Yes, sir," Baker replied. "Though, I believe others are going to want to know how we approach him, if we do find him."

"We approach this with caution but friendly. We need this man on our side."

Forest picked up his phone to give the Canadian Prime Minister a call about the situation.

On Xoth...

The clouds were getting larger and darker. Reia was starting to regret leaving alone. Birds were flying opposite to the direction she was heading. Despite the fear and regret, Reia wanted to know what was going on at the mountains. Thunder was starting to rumble.

In the distance, Reia could see an obelisk. The structure was taller than any building she had ever seen before. The obelisk was black and had a mysterious dark blue glow around it.

"What in Kara's name is that?" Reia whispered to herself.

She wanted to get closer to the structure. Her instincts were screaming at her to turn the other way and fly as fast as she could. Her curiosity was stronger than her fear.

As she got closer, the thunder got louder. Soon lightning started to strike forth from the clouds. It was then Reia realized how foolish it was for her to go this far from the city.

'I should turn back and report this to the city guards. Syl and Tala were right.'

A large lightning bolt struck down on Reia before she had a chance to turn around. When the light vanished, Reia was gone from Xoth.

Tom was walking through his field. Going to sleep as early as he did the day before allowed him to get up before seven. The sun was still cresting over the tree line. During the walk, Tom examined his status and strategized where to spend his one hundred and ten points. Now knowing the full extent of how levelling worked, he was now confident on how to spend his unallocated points.

Perception would become his weakest stat. While it was useful to see through illusions or see more information or items in the environment, it didn't really suit his character type. Perception would be great for a pure mage or rogue character. He would still spend some points in Perception, but nowhere near as many as his other stats.

Luck would be the second weakest stat. From what he understood, Luck was a modifier of your base Luck. Having a low Luck stat did not mean you were unlucky. It meant you had a low modifier on your Luck. Increasing the Luck stat would lead to better chances of critical hits, better drops and odds of events going your way. Tom liked the better drops, but didn't want to rely on his Luck stat for things to go his way. He wanted to rely on his own talent instead. This stat should be reserved for rogue or DPS (Damage Per Second) characters.

Endurance and Agility were in the next tier up. Endurance improved his damage resistance and Stamina reserve. Damage resistance was not to be confused with physical resistance. Damage resistance, as Tom assumed, was a hidden stat that modified how much damage he would receive from any attack. Now the damage resistance increase is good, but he didn't have any skills that use Stamina.

The reasons why Agility is in the same tier was of similar reason as Endurance. An increase in his speed was great, but the Stamina Regen rate was not useful at the moment.

The four stats he needed to focus on were Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom and Vitality. Strength improved his physical damage output while increasing his Health reserve. Intelligence increased his own mental power while increasing his Mana reserve and Magic attack power. Wisdom increased his Mana Regen rate and Vitality increased his Health Regen rate and resistances to illness and toxins. These were the stats that would allow him to become a powerful magical warrior.

'I know where I want to put my points,' he concluded. 'Status.'

'Hmm. Next couple rounds of points should go towards Intelligence and Wisdom.'

The sound of a sonic boom echoed throughout the field. It sounded like it was right over his head, forcing Tom to cover his ears. The sound went by fast and was quickly replaced with a new sound. Tom listened closely.

'What is that sound?'

"Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!"

'Is that screaming?'

Tom looked up and saw someone falling towards him.

'I should have invested more points in Luck.'

The falling person crashed into Tom, forcing him to the ground with her.
50 Damage
Tom moaned and whimpered as he tried to get up.

'I'm so glad I invested more in Endurance.'

A weight on Tom kept him from getting up completely. It was the person who fell on him. Tom immediately noticed that the person wasn't human. Tom expected more monsters from Xoth to appear, but it never came to mind that people from Xoth would appear this soon.

The person on top of him was a young woman of the Naga race. As the book he read described them, they were an anthropomorphic dragon race. The woman in front of him looked almost exactly human, save for the wings, tail and skin. Her skin was aquamarine green with black stripes down her back. The wings that came out from the center of her back were very large. If stretched out, Tom would estimate her wing span to be around twenty feet. The woman's tail was four feet long and slender. The tail ended with a diamond-shaped spike.

The woman on top of him came to and struggled to get up. She groaned in pain as she tried to get up. The woman moved her head up and looked directly at Tom's face, giving him a full look of her face.

'She's... She's gorgeous,' was his first thought after seeing her face.

Like most of her, the woman's face was human-like and beautiful by every measure. Her hair was short in length and a medium blue colour. Her eyes were green and her pupils were slit, like a reptile.

"Uh, h-hello," Tom croaked.

Reia quickly backed away from the man she was on top of. As soon as she made any movements, she felt pain shoot through her right wing. She let out a scream. Reia looked at her wing and saw it was broken. Fear was taking over and was causing her to panic. The man in front of her, while looking similar to an elf, was most definitely not an elf.

Reia lifted her spear up in defense as her main mode of movement was disabled. "Stay back," she said to the man.

Tom slowly got up on his feet while saying, "It's okay. I'm not your enemy. I'll stay where I am. Let's just talk, okay?"

"Who are you?" Reia demanded. "What are you?"

"I'm Thomas Everett, or just Tom," Tom replied. "I'm a human."

"Human? I've never heard of humans."

"Because there are no humans on Xoth. This is going to be hard to say, but you're not on Xoth. You're on Earth. A different world."

"What?" Reia muttered. She moved forward with her spear. "That's... That's not true. You're lying!"

"I know this is hard to believe, but it is the truth," Tom explained. "I can explain everything, but first I should heal your wing."

"Stay back," Reia warned him. "I don't even know if I can trust you."

"I know you're afraid, and rightfully so, but I will not harm to you. Look." Tom slowly spun around in place. "I am unarmed. If it makes you more comfortable, you can keep your spear placed against my stomach." Tom pointed to his stomach. "If I try to attack you, you can stab me. It doesn't matter to me what you need to do to make you feel safe, but please. Let me help you."

Reia thought on his words. She was still panicked over the situation she was in, but Tom's words felt... sincere. Reia lowered her spear.

"Reia."

"Excuse me?"

"My name is Reia Zyer."

NoticePersuasion has reached Beginner Level 5.

Tom slowly walked towards her. With a smile he said, "It's a pleasure to meet you, Reia."

Tom's warm friendly smile caught Reia off guard and made her blush. Still she kept her spear slightly up as he approached. Tom walked right up to her and said, "Like I said, if it makes you feel comfortable, you can keep your spear against me."

Reia felt her heart pound as Tom stood right in front of her and leaned forward with his right hand stretched out. His face was right to hers. Tom pointed his hand at her wing and said, "Heal."

"Ah!" Reia cried out as she felt the bone in her wing realigned and heal. She accidentally let go of her spear and grabbed onto Tom causing him to blush furiously.

The pain from the healing process faded away and Reia found herself clinging to the man she had just met. She backed away and quickly grabbed her spear. "Sorry..."

"It's fine," Tom assured her. "My home is just beyond the trees. We can go there and I can explain the situation to you. Come on." Tom waved for Reia to follow him.

Reia kept her spear at mid-height while scanning the area for any threats. At this point, thanks to Tom healing her wing, she could just fly away, but after really examining the environment, she realized that this place really wasn't her home. There were trees and plants all over that she had never seen before.

She walked past the tree line and was shocked to see a three story tall building. It was one of the largest buildings she had ever seen. The only one bigger would be the city hall building, but just barely.

"Are- Are you the lord over these lands?" she asked Tom.

"I own this property, but I'm no lord. This area used to belong to a farmer who then sold it to my dad to retire early."

"Are your parents here?"

Tom paused before answering, "They're no longer with us."

Reia realized the meaning of his words and quickly apologized, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean-"

"It's okay, it's okay," Tom assured her. "It was years ago."

Tom approached the door to his home and opened it. "Please come in. Are you hungry?"

Reia's stomach groaned after hearing the question. She held her stomach in embarrassment. Reia was in such a hurry to investigate the storm that she forgot to get anything to eat. "I am."

"I'll make us some breakfast," Tom said. "Just sit at the counter and we can talk while I cook."

The architecture of the inside of the house was nothing like Reia has ever seen. Everything was too... perfect in design. Even an expert carpenter would make mistakes, but the walls were too straight and the designs too elaborate. Reia started questioning Tom's honesty after seeing the inside of the house.

'How could anyone but a lord afford such luxuries?' Reia thought as she sat down on a stool at the black counter. The counter had a surface like glass, it was very alien to her. She has never seen material like this before.

"I'm making a ham and cheese omelette," Tom declared. "Does that sound good?"

"Omelette?"

"It's eggs that have been scrambled up and have other ingredients added in. I have some shredded cheddar cheese and a thing of ham."

"Oh, that sounds good."

Tom started cutting up the ham he pulled out of his fridge. With his back turned he started, "Where do I start with this situation?" He gave it a brief thought. "Does the name Hastur sound familiar?"

Hearing the name sent chills down Reia's spine. "Y-You know of Hastur?"

"The demon lord, right?"

Reia was dumbfounded by Tom's casual mention of her world's greatest enemy.

"He has many titles," Reia said. "Hastur the Unspeakable One. The One Who Must Not Be Named. The Yellow King. Our world fears him. Around eighteen years ago, his reign of terror over our world ended when the six heroes greatly injured him at the cost of their own lives. He has been in hiding ever since."

"Not hiding but working," Tom corrected. He tossed the eggs into the pan. "In all that time, Hastur was working on a spell that he had just finished and cannot be stopped. Hastur just cast a spell to fuse your world of Xoth with my world of Earth. In a year's time, our worlds will be fused and a new one born."

"How do you know any of this?"

"I have your goddess Kara to thank for that. Over a week ago, she managed to slightly modify the first wave of the spell. She tested one hundred individuals by having them fight a monster. If they won, they got access to the SYSTEM one year before anyone on Earth. I'm the only survivor of this test. Kara then explained the situation concerning Hastur. I haven't spoken to her since."

"Do you have proof of any of this?" Reia said in an irritated tone. The only people to speak to Kara are the Grand Priests and that's after decades of dedication to the temple of Kara. Lying about the ability to talk to Kara was insulting to her faith.

"Do you have the Identify skill?"

"Everyone has that skill," she scoffed.

"Then use it on me," Tom permitted.

"Very well. Identify."

Reia's eyes widened upon seeing his status. Not only was he level 17, but one of his buffs was "Agent of Kara". She got up from her chair and kneeled down and bowed before him. "I'm so sorry, Agent of Kara. Please accept my apologies!"

Tom said, "Hey, hey, hey. It's fine. Please stand up, it's a bit embarrassing to have you bowing like that."

"If you think-"

"I do, I do! Please stand up."

Reia let out a sigh of relief and got back to her feet. She leaned her spear against the counter and sat back down on her stool.

Tom returned to the omelette. "Anyway, as I was saying. Since I'm the only one to pass the test, I'm the only one on Earth to not only to have access to the SYSTEM, but also able to use magic. Earth and its inhabitants have no access to magic."

"How is that even possible?" Reia demanded. "On Xoth, magic is necessary in every facet of our lives. I cannot even begin to imagine how your people could even build a civilization without it."

"Humanity has two strengths. Our intelligence and our adaptability. We adapted and advanced ourselves through our creations. This is a world of science and technology. You noticed the lights in my home, yes?"

"I've been curious about them."

"Light emitting diode bulb or LED. We run electricity through a filament that shines light. Everything you'll see on my world, no matter how unbelievable, is explainable through science and technology."

Tom folded his omelette and cut it in half. He put one half on one plate and another half on another plate.

'Identify.'

Tom handed Reia her plate along with a fork. "Here you go, enjoy."

Reia stared at the food for a moment before picking up her fork. The food smelled so good. She dug in with her fork and took a bite. The flavours flooded her mouth. It was intense and made her involuntarily moan. "Mmmmmm."

"Glad you enjoy it."

"This is so good!" Reia took several more bites of her eggs before putting her fork down. She wanted to eat more but she needed more answers. "I saw that you're level 17 yet you said that you only just got access to the SYSTEM over a week ago. I'm only level 2."

"You're only level 2?" Tom repeated.

"Hey!" Reia scolded him. "I have reasons. I spent most of my time as a blacksmith, so I didn't have time to go out and fight monsters."

"Sorry!" Tom quickly apologized. "I assumed a lot of people on Xoth would be a higher level than me."

"Usually it's guards, soldiers and adventurers who level up," Reia said. "How did you manage to reach level seventeen in just a week?"

"I was given a skill called Hero's Calling which gives me missions to do until our worlds fuse in a year. Killing monsters, protecting people. My last mission was intense and I ended up killing a bunch of slimes and even a monstrous one. I went from level one to seventeen from that one mission. I was nearly killed by that Monstrous Lightning Slime. But like a good human, I adapted. Getting that double experience buff for being an Agent of Kara helps too."

"Syl, Tala!" Reia suddenly blurted out.

"Excuse me?"

"My sisters. They're going to be so worried about me." Another more dreadful thought entered Reia's head. She cradled her head in her hands. "Will I even see them again?"

"I think you will," Tom said matter-of-factly.

"How can you be sure?"

"Well, you're here. Our worlds are merging so it stands to reason that they'll show up eventually."

"But you don't know when."

"You're right. Could be five minutes from now. Could be the full year until the worlds fully fuse. But I know this. If- When they show up, I'll do everything I can to help you find them."

"Promise?"

"Promise," he said with a smile.

"What happens to me till then?"

"Well you can stay here," Tom replied. "God knows, I don't need all this space. I could help find some things for you to do to keep you busy."

"You said you're doing missions, right? Fighting monsters? Protecting people?"

"Yeah..."

"Let me help you," she demanded while pumping her fist.

"Eh?!"
