Chapter 33: Unity

Chapter 33: Unity

Excerpts from Brief History of Xoth:

Adventurers' Guild

Due to the nature of the world of Xoth, not every population centre is capable of dealing with monster threats or resource gathering with hired guards and soldiers alone. This is where the Adventurers' Guild comes into play. Established hundreds of years ago, the Adventurers' Guild is a politically-neutral organization that can be found in almost every town, city and kingdom. Their purpose is to take in requests from the population or, in many cases, the government, and fulfill them.

There are a few restrictions to what a request may entail. These restrictions include:

1. The request must not defy the law of the town, city or kingdom that the Guild is based in.

2. Assassinations of civilians, nobles, and government officials are forbidden.

3. No requests that has any involvement in any war between any Xoth nation. Only exception is a war with the Demon nation ruled by Hastur.

4. The request cannot cause conflict between living centres.

Anyone can issue a request to the Guild and provide any reward. Difficulty of the request will be tallied based on several conditions under several different quest categories. These categories and conditions include:

1. Monster Elimination or Capture

1a. What kind of monster(s)?

1b. How many monsters?

1c. What is the location of the monster(s)?

2. Criminal Elimination or Capture

2a. How many criminals?

2b. What crimes has the criminal(s) committed?

2c. What is the level of the criminal(s)?

2d. What is their location?

3. Resource Gathering

3a. What is the resource?

3b. What is its location?

4. Escort

4a. How many escorts will be involved?

4b. What is the pathway of the escort?

4c. How long will the escort last?

5. Locating Missing Person(s) or Item(s)

5a. Who or what is missing?

5b. What are possible location(s) of missing person or item?

6. Chores & Miscellaneous Tasks

6a. Length of time for chores.

6b. Skill required for chore.

While there are no restrictions to how much or little is rewarded for a quest, increasing the reward will improve the likelihood of the request being fulfilled. Twenty-five percent of the reward is taken in by the Adventurer's Guild and the other seventy-five percent goes towards the Adventurer.

Adventurer Ranks

There are ten ranks in the Adventurers' Guild, rank ten is the lowest and rank one is the highest. All Adventurers start at rank ten and work their way up the ranks through a point system. Every request has a number of points associated with it. The more difficult the mission, the more points an Adventurer will receive. As an Adventurer goes up in ranks, more points will be required for rank-ups.

Added Note (Thunder):

Adventurer vs. Mercenary vs. City Guard and Soldier

While these group have similar purposes to one another, their organization and regulation greatly differ. Adventurers are regulated by the Adventurers' Guild and are granted access to their resources and requests. Mercenaries are individuals or groups of people who refuse to endure the regulation or restrictions of the Adventurer's Guild. Mercenaries are often seen in war times or are used as assassins.

Potentially, both adventurers and mercenaries can earn a massive amount of money through quests, however this is based on actually fulfilling requests. Without completing quests, adventurers and mercenaries have zero income. This is where the security of a city guard or soldier position comes in. City guards and soldiers will earn a constant income so long as they are employed by the government. Often times, adventurers or mercenaries will become city guards when they retire. In some rare occasions, City Guards or soldiers will do some Adventurer work on the side for additional income.

The books, guides and recommendations have spawned countless discussions both online and offline. The information packet, that Tom created, quickly became the most downloaded books in the world. The government sites that hosted the books crashed multiple times over the next several days, but since the books were free and copyright-free, they were shared all over the internet. This gave everyone in the world access within a couple days of the announcement.

The release of the books along with the announcement by the world's governments had many different effects on the world. As expected, more protests and riots have erupted across the world. The message that these events tried to convey were lost in the chaos. Politicians that were outside of the inner circle of world leaders were outraged that the information about the world merger was kept from them until the announcement.

Dissenters emerged from the other side of the conversation. There were politicians, civilians and scientists, from different countries, who refused to believe the information. Among the civilian population, their skepticism came from their personal belief that it is the religious end of the world. Others believed that the monsters were escaped science experiments and that the world governments are taking this opportunity to create a unified world government to cement their control over the world.

In the scientific community, many refused to believe that something like magic could exist and that there had to be a more logical explanation for current events than a demon did it. Even with the books out, they still continue to work towards finding an explanation they find more reasonable.

VVVVVV

It was June 4th. Three days have passed since the global announcement. Tom and his companions trained with their skills, almost nonstop, in that time. With more people to train alongside, Tom was able to learn more about skill levelling. He found that using skills in different contexts has a different effect on skill experience gain. Using skills against living things results in a greater gain of skill experience than simply using inanimate objects.

Secondly, Tom learned from Vivian that his skill levelling and anyone in his party is abnormal compared to the average Adventurer on Xoth. He came up with the theory that two factors is causing this. Tom believed that his Agent of Kara title also affect skill experience alongside his level experience. The other factor is that the average Adventurer is focused on completing missions in order to have a stable income. Since few people have the Fast Travel skill, they spent the majority of their day to reach their quest location. With so much time spent towards quest completion, this often left little time for training.

A final bit of information that Tom discovered was that once a skill reaches Master level, it took an extraordinary amount of experience to level up. So far he only managed to get his Identify and Cook skill to Master Level 2 despite using them often. His personal goal is to max out most, if not all, his skills before Earth and Xoth merge.

Tom and the girls were out in the front lawn to do their mid-morning training session. The sky was partially cloudy and the air was lukewarm. It was a perfect day to train.

Tom and Tala stood in his front yard. Most of Tala's knowledge and skill of her spells came from her habit of studying spellbooks and magic theory books when she worked in the library. As Tom learned from their first mission together, and later practice, Tala required a lot of real world training.

To the other side of the yard, was Reia and Vivian who practiced with their weapons. Sylmae was off near the two practicing with her bow. There were targets set up on the many trees in the nearby forest for Sylmae to use as target practice.

"Okay, Tala, today we are changing up practice," Tom declared.

Tom had a box next to his feet filled with clay pigeons. Next to the boxes were two machines with a large stack of bright orange disks that fed into it. Each machine had a foot pedal underneath it.

"We have practiced hitting stationary targets, now we are going to try against moving targets," Tom explained. "I had you try your different offensive magic skills for the last few days and study how long it takes for your spell to reach its target. Can you tell me your fastest spell?"

"The fastest traveling offensive spell in my arsenal is Lightning Strike," Tala replied. "Which travels travels to its target in, almost, an instance. Wind Blade is in second by traveling forty meters per second based on the speedometer's reading."

"Correct," Tom said. "Now just because it moves that fast does not mean it cannot be dodged."

"How can you dodge that?"

"By anticipating it," Tom answered. "Over a couple weeks ago, Reia and I had a run in with a group of terrorists known as Phoenix. While Reia took on the ground soldiers, I took on their leader: Rika Darma. She is one of a few Humans on Earth who has access to the SYSTEM. It's only in retrospect that I realized this, but she was able to anticipate my attacks due to two reasons. I had my hand held up and I yelled out my attack. In a fight it can be very hard to think, especially when you need to constantly act and react. Up to that point, I was used to fighting enemies that didn't understand my attack pattern, so at that time it was force of habit. Since then I have trained myself to cast more unpredictably. Watch. You see that target?"

Tom pointed to the dummy across the yard from them. Tala nodded to answer Tom's question. Tom stared at the dummy for a second before he swung his arm up and fired off a fireball.

"Now notice that I didn't have my arm raised until I was ready to fire off my spell. I also said the spell mentally to avoid letting my enemy know what I was going to cast. I still need a lot of practice to make it second nature but, with effort, it can be done. I'll make sure you'll be able to do it as well."

"I look forward to it," Tala said with a weak smile.

Tom noticed Tala's behaviour has changed since her arrival on Earth. She stuttered less and was more friendly around him. Tom was thankful he was getting along with her. On the other hand, Sylmae has shifted her attitude around him from neutral to a cold demeanor with very few instances of friendliness. He felt like she held some sort of resentment towards him. Tom was afraid to directly ask her what her issue with him. All he could hope for was that he could build up a friendship with her overtime.

Vivian was a different issue entirely. She was friendly with him from the very beginning and has only become more... flirtatious... as time went on. Tom was still not used to Xoth mannerisms so he was confused by Vivian's attitude towards him. He didn't know if she was just being friendly or if she harboured deeper feelings towards him. For the time being, he trod on eggshells to avoid any misunderstandings.

"Alright, now what are your slowest moving spells?" Tom asked Tala.

"My slowest offensive spell is Fireball," Tala answered. "It travels ten meters per second. It however makes up for it by having a larger impact radius which means the spell requires less precision."

"Correct," Tom said. "There are strength and weaknesses to each spell, but understanding what spell is needed for every situation will make you an unstoppable powerhouse."

Tom placed his foot over the pedal of the clay pigeon launcher.

"Alright, ready your spell and try to destroy this clay pigeon."

"Ready!"

Tom stepped down on the pedal and the machine fired out a clay pigeon.

"Nyaa!" Tala yelled as she stabbed her staff forward. An Ice Spike shot forward towards the clay pigeon and missed by a meter. "I missed..."

"It's a good first attempt," Tom encouraged her. "Clay pigeons are a small, fast target. We're going to keep trying until you can hit them every time with every spell."

"Can you hit them with your spells?" she asked.

"Eh..." Tom gave a shaky hand gesture. "About ten percent of the time with my Fireball. A quarter of the time with my Lightning Strike. I've been practicing since that rocket incident in Russia."

"Rocket?"

"The short of it is I wasn't able to hit a fast moving small target and it resulted in... consequences. We need to work together to make sure something like that doesn't happen again. Alright?"

"Right!"

Across the yard, Sylmae stole glances at Tom and Tala every time she notched an arrow. She glared at each target as she fired her bow. The arrows managed to hit each target but varied in accuracy with none of them hitting the bull's-eye. Sylmae notched another arrow and took aim at a target in the distance. Before she released the string, someone pinched her butt causing her to yelp and release her arrow which flung past the target and into the trees.

Sylmae spun around and found Vivian standing there with a hand on her hip.

"What are you doing?" Syl demanded.

"Getting you to loosen up," Vivian replied. "Reia went for a drink and I noticed you You seem more focused on levelling your glaring ability than your archery. You really need to calm yourself around Tom. He has been nothing but kind and generous to us since we arrived and you've been acting colder and colder towards him."

"So what? Just because he's nice to us I should just bend over and present myself to him."

"That's not what I mean and you know it. I don't care if you ever develop any feelings towards him, Syl. What I'm saying is this: Don't act like a jerk to him because he's in a relationship with Reia or he's getting friendly with Tala."

Sylmae pouted and returned to her archery.

"You'll have to deal with it sooner or later," Vivian said before heading over to Reia who had just returned from getting drinks.

Back on Tom's side of the field, Tala and his practice was interrupted when his government-issued phone began to vibrate and ring. He picked it up and answered, "Hello?"

"Mister Everett, it's Agent Moore."

"Ah, Moore. Nice to hear from you. Something come up?"

"I'm just giving you a heads up that I'm heading over to your place now. There is something we need to discuss. I'll be there in a few minutes."

"Alright, see you then." Tom hung up the phone and put it away in its case. "Everyone! Agent Moore will be coming in a few minutes. We'll put training on hold till tomorrow."

The others let out a breath in relief and put away their equipment into their Inventory. Reia gave everyone a drink to nurse while they waited for the CSIS agent to arrive. Since the world's governments discovered his identity, Agent Moore had become both Tom's liaison to the Canadian government and their unofficial baby-sitter. He would often show up to ask Tom and his companions questions about Xoth and their governments.

True to his word, Moore drove up Tom's drive after several minutes. He parked his grey sedan and got out while holding a large brown envelope.

"Good morning," he greeted as he approached Tom's group.

"Sure is," Reia replied.

"So what brings you here, Agent Moore?" Tom asked.

"Well, as promised," he replied while handing over the envelope. "Reia Zyer, Vivian Terrabane, Sylmae Lyvan, and Tala Mau. You four are now officially Canadian citizens. The envelope contains their SIN card, birth certificate with a date roughly based on their Xoth birth date, their OHIP card, and their GED certificate. Also, as requested, there are two versions of their OHIP cards that uses both their real form and disguised form. You four are good to go in this country."

"Thank you so much, Agent Moore," Reia said as she opened the envelope. Inside were four smaller envelopes. She pulled out the first envelope and Sylmae's name was written on it. Reia passed it to her and then followed up by passing Tala's and Vivian's envelopes.

"Be sure to put those documents away in a safe," Moore suggested.

"Oh, I look good on my OHIP card," Vivian said.

"Now, Mister Everett, about the UN vote today..."

"Yeah?" Tom said.

"We will need you at the UN by two pm. The presentation of the Unity Accord will be at two-thirty and the vote will occur right after."

"Okay."

"Also... we are going to need you to say a few things about the Unity Accord."

"Wait, what?" Tom exclaimed. "I was told I didn't need to say anything!"

"I know, but a lot of nation leaders are upset that they were kept out of the loop when you met with the G20. The Unity Accord's survival is not as ensured as we hoped. We have the support of the G20 and some of its closest allies, but we need more. They are demanding that you speak about the Accord."

"Fuck," Tom muttered under his breath. "I don't have anything prepared to say."

"Well, you have four hours. I'm sorry to put you on the spot but we are given very little choice in the matter. We need to unite our world's military against the monsters of Xoth and Hastur."

Tom loudly sighed, "Sonuva bitch..."

VVVVVV

Tom and the others waited in a small room with several chairs. The only few other items in the plain room was a full length mirror, an abstract painting of half a dozen individuals holding hands with one another in a circle, and a television that played footage from the UN General Assembly. Reia, Sylmae, Tala and Vivian sat on their chairs calmly while Tom nervously paced back and forth in the room.

"Able to take on Cyclops, Giants and Occuloraptors, but can't handle public speaking," Vivian amusedly said.

"I don't know how you four are so calm?" Tom muttered. He was sweating at this point.

"Because we only have to sit in there and look pretty," Reia joked.

Tom stopped in front of the full length mirror and looked at himself. Over the past few days, he managed to get him and his friends formal clothing for the UN General Assembly. He was dressed in a dark grey suit and wore a navy blue tie. Tom still wore his white cloak to obscure his identity to the world.

'I look like a jackass,' he thought.

Reia got up from her seat and walked over to Tom. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders and said to him, "You'll do fine. You read that Accord front and back, and you do believe in it. Right?"

"Yeah," he said.

"Then tell them how you feel about it."

"We believe in you," Tala said.

"Knock 'em down," Vivian cheered.

Tom managed to calm down. Before he could get in a word, someone knock on the door. Reia released Tom from her hold before the door opened.

A man in a suit walked in and said, "Thunder, Aurora, Terra, Pyre and Tempest. It's time. Please follow me."

Tom and the others followed the man towards the General Assembly. The UN General Assembly was larger than what Tom expected. Everyone's eyes and the cameras immediately turned towards their direction. As Tom and his company walked down the aisle, many in the assembly stood up and applauded.

Tom felt good when he heard the applause. He looked around the area and noticed that only half the people in the room were applauding. The others either watched him with contempt or without emotion.

Tom and his friends reached the front of the Assembly and walked onto the front platform where the US President sat. Tom recognized the Chinese woman who stood at the speaker's pulpit as the UN Secretary-General, Li Jia. Several other UN officials sat to the sides of the platform or at the desk on the upper platform. The man that guided Tom and his friends, gestured towards the chairs for them to sit on.

Li Jia turned her attention back to the Assembly and declared, "Before we take a recess and then vote on the Accord, Thunder has a few words to say on the subject." She turned to Tom who just sat down on his chair and nodded for him to come up.

'I just sat down...'

Tom got up from his chair and approached the pulpit. He briefly glanced back once towards Reia and the others. Reia smiled and nodded. Tom stood at the podium and coughed into his fist. He then took a deep breath and released it to help calm himself.

"I would like to thank everyone for the privilege to speak here today about the Unity Accord. It has been over a month since M-Day, and on that day a hundred individuals were given a test in order to gain access to the SYSTEM. I was lucky to survive that test, and I was devastated to learn of the carnage and deaths that took place. It was in their memory that I fought to protect lives around the world from the monsters from Xoth." Tom took a brief pause. "I'll be honest. Regardless of the power I gained by gaining access to the SYSTEM, none of my victories were my own." That admission caused confusion to the Assembly. "Every step of the way I have received help from others. Whether it was from a Spanish cop bravely doing his job or a group of selfless individuals from another world... I had help."

Reia, Vivian and Tala smiled in response to that line. Sylmae leaned forward in her seat and listened more intently to Tom's speech.

"That's where the Unity Accord comes in. I have heard many opinions over the week about this Accord. Some have accused it of being born from fear and personal interest. I have had the opportunity to read over the Accord and I can say with certainty that it was not born of fear, but born out of necessity to fight fear. Everything our world has faced so far is just the wildlife of Xoth. When our world merge with Xoth, a war will begin with Hastur and his army. Hastur is unlike any enemy our race has ever faced. Knowing he's responsible for starting the process of merging our worlds only shows that he is powerful beyond imagination. Our only hope in stopping him is by uniting together and allying ourselves with the people of Xoth. I know that the situation I have presented seems dire. Impossible even, but isn't that what we Humans, in our nature, strive to overcome? We are defined by our determination and our ability to overcome difficult challenges, and right now we are up against the great crisis in our race's existence. So I stand before the General Assembly, not as a citizen of any one nation, but as a member of the Human race to plead to every nation. Support the Unity Accord, so Humanity can become the heroes we were born to be."

The General Assembly was quiet at first. Tom didn't know whether his words had any impact. His teeth tightened together as the moment of silence stretched longer.

'I-I failed...' he mentally chastised himself.

Tom's negative thoughts were interrupted when he saw a window appear in front of him.

Notice Persuasion has reached Master Level 1.

Notice Your words have not only inspired world leaders, but Humanity as well. You have earned the title "Voice of Humanity". This title will have you exert a positive aura towards any individual you first meet, whether Human or Xoth-Born, who has a moral alignment that is neutral or good. Your aura will greatly anger anyone with an evil alignment.

Several individuals in the Assembly stood up and started to clap. Surprising Tom, the individuals that stood up were world leaders that were hesitant over supporting the Unity Accord. Several more stood up to clap. Like a dam giving way to the rushing waters, all of the remaining world leaders stood up to join the applause.

Looking at the cameras, a thought came to Tom. 'Did I accidentally brainwash my world?'

Not brainwashed, just persuaded. Like the skill says. You're not forcing ideas or opinions, just convincing people.

'What? Kara?'

Very nice speech by the way.

'Not a good time, Kara. We'll talk tonight.'

Oh, fine!

The Secretary-General walked up beside Tom and tapped him on the back to let him know that he could go back to his seat. He stepped away from the podium and went back to his chair next to his companions.

"I would like to call for a recess before the vote," Li announced.

VVVVVV

The vote was unanimous and the Unity Accord passed. The Accord allowed for the creation of a military that would be under command of the United Nations. This military would receive an initial annual budget of 77.83 billion dollars. Every country in the world would contribute the best trained soldiers they can offer from their main military to ensure that the UN army is immediately ready to fight. The set goal is 10000 soldiers within the month. Finally, every country would contribute as much technology as possible for the military in the form of weaponry, vehicles, computer tech, and robotics.

Tom, Reia, Tala, Sylmae and Vivian were back in the waiting room. There they watched CNN pundits discussed what implications were for the passing of the Unity Accord.

"I didn't want to get all excited out there and cause a distraction, but that was a good speech," Reia told Tom.

"I felt like I was going to die out there," Tom moaned. He had his face planted in both his hands and hunched over.

"You are one odd man," Vivian chuckled.

They heard the door open and looked in its direction. Forest entered the room. Tom looked up and had a sour look on his face. With his cloak over his head, the President was unable to see it.

"I would like to first apologize for putting you in that situation," Forest said. "I know we told you that you that you would only be a presence here."

"It's not exactly a good idea to ask an introvert, who has more-or-less been living a hermit's life for the past couple years, to give a world changing speech within four hours," Tom growled.

"Our hands were tied. We have spent the last several weeks negotiating with the other nations around our world and we were getting no where. The only nations that were willing to join without resistance were the ones that were directly attack by monsters. That still left us with half the world."

"I'm surprised they didn't want to hear from us," Sylmae said.

"They did. We actually had to argue it down to just Thomas here. We told them that forcing a person from another world to speak in front of the world's leaders after being on our world for only a week or a month, in the case of Reia, would be asking too much of you."

Tom sighed. "We can be thankful for small mercies."

"Despite the lack of time you were given, you did a damn good job here, Thomas. It gave us that extra push needed to pass the Unity Accord. Today is a historic day. You should be proud."

"I'd prefer to stick to my missions and training."

"Heh, heh," Forest laughed in his throat. "Speaking of training... Your property is going to be renovated starting tomorrow to bring in solar panels and wind turbines, right?"

"How did...? Right. Government."

"We have a facility in New Mexico where we have been preparing for the Unity Accord. I would like it if you could come down there with your friends and give us advisement towards dealing with monsters and SYSTEM-enhanced individuals."

"Will this be our role now?"

"More or less. Officially, you will be under the jurisdiction of the UN military force which will be known as the United Nations Defense Force or the UNDF. Now you and your friends will have a special position in the UNDF. Unofficially, you will be given almost full autonomy. Your group will operate as specialists who will report directly to the Supreme Commander who will be put in charge of the UNDF."

"Sounds reasonable."

"Now, can you all handle staying at a military facility for the duration of the construction on your property?"

"I think we can," Tom said while briefly glancing back to the girls. "Are you all right with this, ladies?"

"Well, it certainly beats roughing it out in the woods like you originally planned," Vivian replied.
